I'm so glad I finally found out about mane tamer after all these years of struggling to make my hair look decent. What I like about Marty is that he doesn't just cut your hair and let you leave. He carefully explains what he is doing and why he's doing it through the whole process of cutting and styling. He made sure I didn't leave the salon without understanding how to successfully style my hair every day. I left feeling confident with my curls for the first time. Definitely worth it.
I had been growing my hair out for a year from a previous buzz cut. It had no style, just a poof-ball with what looked like earmuffs around my ears. I've had all kinds of cuts, including the Ouidad. It has been layered, all one length, relaxed. You nameit, I've tried it. Nothing ever changed the way my hair laid. My cousin told me about the DEVA cut and about Mane Tamer. Thank goodness she did! Marty cut my curls into an acutal style. A style which I can recreate at home. (who knew a few clips on the ends of my curls could make my frizzy bangs look longer!) I was also skeptical about purchasing the DEVA products. How many products have I already bought from how many salons and discount stores only to find out that they don't work at all? But the DEVA products actually make my hair look like it did in the salon. Even better, since I can style it the way I like. Marty was fun and made me feel pretty. I will go again, but not for a while. A DEVA cut can last six months!
I just had my first DEVA cut and it was my first haircut in a very long time. My last haircut was a disaster and I've been afraid since. CJ was the best! She talked to me about what I wanted and told me what was happening as she did her magic. She assured me that she wouldn't give me too much volume and that the curls would cascade like they should. Sure enough they do and it looks amazing! I even walked into a store afterwards and got some compliments on my curls. That hasn't happened in a long time! I've found my new hairdresser! Thanks again CJ!
I just had my first DevaCut from Marty. He gave me the best cut I've ever had. It really brought out the curls in my wavy hair and looked beautiful when we were finished styling. I can tell I will be able to do a great job of styling the cut myself. Ladies, if you want to bring out your inner CurlyGirl, go to Marty! P.S. he is a hoot - you'll have fun just talking let alone a wonderful haircut!
The Mane Tamer is relaxed, cool, and comfortable. Stephanie is the best. I've been going to her for years, and I'm always happy with my hair. She is really knowledgeable about not only hair in general, but about what my specific hair needs. I highly recommend her. She's awesome.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for such a great experience! I haven’t felt this good about my hair in years. I’ve always been the type of girl who quivered when a stylist would talk about “cutting” opposed to just “trimming”…I loved my long hair. This was true for 33 years until I recently got a Deva cut from Marty Franco! My hair has life again! It’s bouncy, curly, and sexy. I can’t even strut into a place without someone complimenting my hairdo...and I love every minute of it! No more drab buns or ponytails for me. Marty (and this new haircut of mine) has brought my sassy back! -- TD :)
I started going to Marty a couple of years ago and have loved every cut up until the last one. Last Nov. Marty cut my hair and I am still stewing about it. Part of the problem was my fault (I think), it seems that what Marty was saying and what I was hearing were 2 different things. I thought that I was getting the great cut that I always got from Marty; but, he decided to get creative. When he got out the clippers to shave my neck I knew I was in trouble. He said he was going to "stack" the back, which to me meant that he was going to layer it up but still leave some length. What I got was cut to the hair line then layered up in the back with the sides left long. This might not have been too bad; but, it seems Marty was having a bad hair day (not his, mine)!! When I washed it for the first time it was very uneven, I had to come to a stylist in NC where I live to get it straightened out. I like to wear my hair up in the summer; but, it is not long enough in the back to keep it up yet. I did give Marty a 3 this time because he USUALLY gives a really great cut; but, not this time. Just be careful that both of you are on the same page before he starts cutting.
Stephanie is a magician! I will never see anyone else for my curls and style, which have been impossible to manage. Thank you!!
I can't say enough about Stephanie @ Mane Tamer. The salon is casual, comfortable and welcoming. Before Stephanie and Mane Tamer, I rarely walked out of a salon pleased with my hair. It's something I learned to accept as a curly girl. Stephanie is a curly girl and understands curly hair. She is patient, skilled and always pleasant. I enjoy my time with Stephanie and rarely notice the time when I'm there. Her cuts are precise, whether Deva or standard cut. She has taught how to treat my curls and the difference is visible. As a colorist, Stephanie is amazing. My color is consistently gorgeous. I frequently get compliments and am always sure to give Stephanie the credit. My hair is so easy and pretty now thanks to Stephanie. I finally love my curls! I only wish I had discovered Stephanie @ Mane Tamer sooner. Judy
Just had my second Deva cut with CJ and I love it!! So great to FINALLY find a stylist that knows how to cut my curly hair and reassuring to know she is a certified Deva specialist! CJ is fun and personable and I would recommend the Mane Tamer and CJ to anyone looking for a fresh curly style!
Being a "Curly girl" has not been easy...I have went to extremes to tame "the beast." My very first Deva cut was in a New York Salon and It was great. However the salon was very pricey and it was difficult to keep up with the trips and with my budget. I started going to The Mane Tamer a few months ago and I believe it is better than the salon I used to go to. Not only are the prices more friendly, but so is the entire staff. It's a great atmosphere and you are treated there like family. I love the Mane Tamer and anyone would be crazy not to go there! I love my hair and yes, I do get those random stops in the grocery store from strangers complimenting me on my do.
CJ is great! I just started going to her about a year and a half ago and she really has been the only stylist that has been able to cut my hair and make it look great! I get the Deva cut and she really takes her time and knows how to cut my hair. I also get highlites from CJ and she does an amazing job to make my hair look natural. Go to CJ if you have curly hair, she does a great Deva cut!!!
Stephanie is knowledgeable about DEVA methods and is a good colorist. I stopped going there because (1) they raised their prices as of March 2011. (2) I don't find the staff to be highly professional - Stephanie alone cancelled 3 out of the 5 appointments with me over the last 15 months. One time she was sick, and I'm not sure about the other two instances. I also did not like how I would be scheduled at 5pm and I would likely get a call asking if I could come earlier. I work long hours and it was hard enough to schedule enough time for a DEVA (1.5 hours usually). I think she gives greats cuts most of the time. I found (since I like shorter bob styles) that she was always afraid to cut my hair because she prefers longer hair. I always had to ask her to take more off. While she has a lot of knowledge, it comes across snarky at times. One plus is I never felt compelled or pressured to buy the DEVA products there - I always go to ULTA because of their coupons and pricing. I gave Stephanie a rating of 3 and would not go back there. If you have long hair and don't need frequent trims, then she may be a good fit for you.
I had my hair cut from Marty at Maner Tamer and I absolutely love it! I have struggled for years to find a stylist who can cut curly hair. I usually left the salon unsatisfied. Marty did an excellent job. I would highly recommend his salon for any one looking for a quality cut.
I got may hair cut at Mane Tamer a few weeks ago and I'm just as in love with my hair now as I was when I left the salon. Stephanie really understands curly hair and took a lot of time and care with my curls, and she gave me great personalized tips on how to care for it. Gone are the embarrassing days of leaving a salon after having my hair cut only to put it in a ponytail as soon as I left the salon! I'm so happy I found Mane Tamer and Stephanie. She's got a client for life!
Just got my cut, color and highlights done by Stephanie. As always, I am very pleased. She always knows the perfect shades to match my skin tone. When I get a cut from her, she always has a way to make my hair frame my face perfectly. The fact that she knows how to cut my wavy/curly hair so I don't have to do anything with it in the morning and it still looks great makes me go to her everytime. Thank you Stephanie!!
Stephanie did my wedding hair updo for my 10/17/10 wedding. Stephanie was so great to work with. I went in for a trial and it was just what I had in mind. On the day of the wedding, she was 100% professional and styled my hair plus 4 others. I wanted to wear my hair up and naturally curly and she worked with me to make sure that my curls were prominent and that I looked like me on my wedding day. I would recommend Stephanie to any curly girl who wants to keep her hair curly on her wedding day.
I tried this salon on Friday based on past reviews and I'm glad I did. Marty is great -- he explained everything to me as we went along and gave me a ton of tips. My hair was cut too recently (4-5 weeks prior) so there were layers that were too short to do much to, but he still shaped it to get the bulk off the bottom and the hair away from my face. He also got the back to curl, which I've never been able to do! I will definitely be back in 4 months for cut #2 and have been passing his business card out to all my curly-headed friends. Also, the shampoo / scalp massage I got from the salon is the best I had in years!
Marty Franco Is a genius. He is one of the few people I trust to cut my hair let alone have creative lisence. He gives an edge to my hair which most people would be afraid to touch. He undersands how the hair works and the personality of his clients.
I just went to The Mane Tamer for my two daughters who have curly hair. Marty Franco, the owner, recommended that I get them the Deva Cut. My daughters hair always looked frizzy and was very hard to manage. After they got there hair cut they looked completley different. There hair lays beautifully with very little effort in styling. Both of my girls love it and now we are regulars at the salon. This style will not only make their hair look beautiful all the time but it will also save them time on those rushed mornings.
I have been going to Stephanie for years. I would recommend her to anyone. I have the type of hair that is in between wavy, curly, and frizzy depending on the day. With this type of hair, the wrong cut looks horrible. Stephanie has never failed me. She always knows what to do. I trust her so much, when I sit in her chair I simply say, "make me pretty" and she never fails to do so.
I have been seeing CJ for Deva cuts and color for at least two years. I always go back to her because she gives me FABULOUS hair! My hair has never been easier to style, and it grows out beautifully. CJ kindly answers all of my curly hair questions and is always willing to share her considerable curly hair knowledge.
I have been a Curly Girl for the past five years and I love the way that Stephanie cuts my hair. She does an amazing job and I have happily sent other people to her.
AWESOME! I've been to two or three different stylists at the NY Deva chain and a stylist in CT that was Deva trained, and Stephanie puts them all to shame. So worth the money
I went through my awkward teenage years not knowing what to do with my curly hair. I am now almost 22 and have been getting Marty's deva cuts for a few years, and I could not be happier. He does an incredible job every single time, no matter if you want a trim or a big change. I highly recommend him if you don't know what to do with your curly hair, and want a great cut and style!
I've always been someone with hair that wouldn't do anything that was asked of it and it's always been wet down and pulled straight with a comb to be cut. I was struggling to bring out my curl and when I heard about Deva cuts and saw others' results, I went looking and found Marty on devaconcepts and saw his reviews here. The buzz is true, he is really expert at cutting curly hair. I have a lot of hair and he went through it curl by curl, dry, cutting it to the length I wanted but shaped in a way that would fit with my face, then he had it washed and showed me the best way to put in the leave-in products, then went over it again. I was very happy with the result and I will be going back to him for "scheduled maintenance".
I found Stephanie by looking at this website and had heard glowing recommendations for her in the community. I had been researching Deva cuts for about a year, but never had the courage to get one. I'm extremely hairdresser-phobic! From the beginning of the haircut until the end, I felt extremely comfortable. She taught me new ways to manage my curly hair, and really seemed to have a lot of knowledge. She's a curly girl herself, and I think that made a lot of difference, because she has been styling her own curly hair all her life and has that "insider knowledge"... I feel so relieved knowing that after over 30 years of searching, I finally have a stylist who understands and knows how to cut/style my curly hair. I no longer feel that I have to be nervous about how a haircut will "come out"...I know that when I go to her, it will look perfect in the end!
I was visiting MD from NC and found Marty and The Mane Tamer Salon on naturallycurly.com. I had never heard of the Deva cut until I read the reviews about Marty. Marty gave me the cut I have been trying for almost 20 yrs to get. My curly hair now swings, which is exactly what I wanted. Marty took the time to explain exactly why and what he was doing. Since my visit to Marty I have bought the Curly Girl book (which he showed me his dog-eared copy of) and the Deva products he recommended, both are excellent for any Curly Girl. Thanks Marty, I'll be back. Marti from Surf City, NC
I had my first deva cut done by Marty at the Mane Tamer a couple of weeks ago. I love it. He took so much time with me. He cut each curl dry, flipped my head and cut certain pieces again, and then looked at it again after washing and styling to be sure that anything was not missed. He answered all my questions and showed me how to style it the deva way. I will go back many more times. My hair lays so much nicer and he was able to bring much more of my curl out.
I got my first deva cut a week ago from Marty and loved it. He was very thorough cutting each curl dry and then flipping my head upside down to go over it again and after washing and styling, he cut once more. He used all Deva Curl products and made my hair look beautiful. He brought my curls to life again.
I am so happy with my new curly cut. I decided at age 60 that I had had enough of blowing my hair dry for 45 minutes every day. It was scary to go curly, but what a relief! Marty is fabulous. He worked with me after the cut, inviting me to come in for instructions, but his cuts are so fabulous that they are easy to manage on my own. I'm so glad I became a Deva! Be sure to ask for either Marty or Stephanie if you go to Mane Tamer.
I went from blowing my hair straight every day to getting a Deva cut from Marty. He pays attention to my every curl. He really is a magician with hair. My hair is wavy, so it is harder to encourage my curls, but he is so skilled at doing this haircut that it comes out beautifully every time. And not only that, I'm able to do my own hair when I get home.
Most of the stylists who do the Deva cuts at Mane Tamer were trained in NY, including Marty, Stephanie, and CJ. Be sure to get one of them. I have been going to Marty, who has given me terrific haircuts. My hair is wavy, which is more difficult to train into curls, but he has turned me into a real curly girl, and one who can do my own hair easily because of the great cut I received. I can't stop looking at my curls in the mirror!
Marty has saved me. Before coming to him (13 years ago!) my curly hair had a mind of its own. Ever since Marty started cutting my hair, it behaves according to my liking and looks great! I regularly get complements. I highly recommend Marty.
On December 31st I visited the Mane Tamer and a very nice and professional gentleman gave me the most fabulous hair cut. The teatment I received and the ending results were fantastic. I recommend the Mane Tamer to every man, woman and child. The service was excellent. I have appointments scheduled with Marty for next six months. I will never have my hair cut, colored and styled at another Salon. Marty you are #1 in my book. Your entire team rocks!!! Happy New Year! Beth
I was looking for a salon that could do the Deva cut. Found Mane Tamer on here- Had a deva cut that was amazing in Ohio in August but I live in MD. So this November I scheduled an appointment with Cynthia at the Mane Tamer. This was the worst cut ever. My curls are not laying right my "bulkiness" I have very thick hair was not taken care of - I feel like I never had a hair cut. To top it off it was $30 more than my cut in Ohio (Columbus). My color was awful too. I would not recommend this salon to anyone. Maybe I just selected the wrong stylist?! Not sure but I will not go back. On the search again for a good Deva cut in MD.
I am from a family of hairdressers. However, they like to cut my curly hair wet and straight. Cynthia made me extremely comfortable. She did a great job with my ethnic 3c/4a curly hair. The deva-cut made my curls look like they never have before. Even my husband loved it (and he hates when I get my hair cut).
I just got the best cut of my life! I went to Stephanie at Mane Tamer. I don't have super curly hair but curly enough to be a pain. Most of the time when I went to a salon I looked good when I left but when it came time to duplicate the look at home I was at a loss. I hated paying so much for a cut and then looking like I needed another the next day. Stephanie gave me a great cut and then did something amazing, she taught me how to care for it! This is so important because the average person does not go to the salon everyday. The entire experience was wonderful. She made me feel very at ease (I'm normally nervous getting my hair cut) and by the time I left I felt like one of her best friends. People still ask me if I just got back from the salon! Thank you Stephanie, you have renewed my confidence in stylists.
I just want to add in my two cents! For years, I looked for a stylist who understood curly, kinky, frizzy hair. I finally found her in CJ. Not only does she give me a great haircut, she is a fabulous colorist who understands what curly hair needs to look good. I have finally embraced my "inner curl" after denying it for so many years. I highly recommend her to anyone with curly hair.
Oh my goodness, I am I in love with my hair! I never knew I could love a haircut this much. I went and saw Stephanie after reading the reviews on this site and finding out that she's a DevaCare specialist. This is absolutely the best cut I have ever had. My big problem was volume and body and with my new cut, I have it!! She was so personable and really spent a lot of time explaining things to me and teaching me how to do things with my hair. I have found a stylist for life!
CJ has already been recommended on this site but I want to add my own glowing opinions! I've been to CJ a few times now and not only is it a great hair cut, but it's a relaxing, enjoyable experience-- it feels like visiting with a friend! I got my first "curly girl" cut at Devachan in New York but CJ has given me some great additional tips about caring for my hair and making it easy to manage on a day to day basis. She's well worth the time, the money and, if it's necessary, the trip up to Baltimore/Pikesville.
I found Stephanie, an official “curl care consultant,” through the Devachan website. I was in serious need of a hair cut. The last time I had even a trim was over 3 years ago and it showed. I was very nervous since I had had my fair share of bad hair cuts in the past. Stephanie was so nice and listened to all my concerns. She gave me the best hair cut of my life! She had to cut a lot of damaged hair off and gave me long layers that make my hair curlier and bouncier (with no frizz) than it has ever been!!!
