Mark transformed the last 3 chop jobs into a very nice shape for me. He used a lot of product that my hair needs. I left wet and when it dried it looked great. I'm really glad I made the 45 minute drive and gave him a shot. Well worth the time, I've found someone I trust now. No more stressing over haircuts.
I'm truly amazed by the number of rave reviews here. Sometimes I think we curly haired girls are so used to people that don't have a single clue what they're doing, that anything a little better seems more amazing than it is. I, however, had a fantastic stylist for 10 years and never once had a bad haircut. People used to approach me on the street to ask me where I got my hair cut and curly-haired friends asked me time and again what products I used and if I would do their hair.
But alas, I lost my hair god and had to find a new one. I came to Marc hoping he could fix a terrible hair cut I got before him. After listening to him talk for 30 minutes about the dreaded triangle, I figured I was in good hand. Wrong. Ironically, I actually left with the dreaded triangle after all that hype. And I'm completely baffled as to how when we spent so long talking about how my last stylist wouldn't give me layers and how I wanted "lots" of layers, and brought a picture showing just that. He also went much shorter than we discussed, so now I have to grow it out before I can even have someone fix it. Oh, and one side is longer than the other and there are lots of random long hairs that stick out.
Another sign for me that he isn't the curly hair expert everyone here seems to think is that he treats all curls the same. We were discussing how long we can go between washes, and I said my real issue is once I put my hair up, it's done. If I take it down after that, it's just a total mess (as with any hair, a hair tie creates lots of creases... I can fix it if I wet it a bit, but yeah, it'll never be the same). He told me that this means I'm not putting enough product in my hair and went on about the 4 products everyone should use. Um, NO. I use very little product in my hair, and I can get away with it. If your hair is healthy, you can achieve nice, smooth, silky curls with a ton of product.... rather than sticky or crunchy hair, which no one wants. Another reason my friends always ask me what I use, because they want to know how not to have the wet look.
I (stupidly) asked for a blowout, again assuming a curl expert would know what he's doing. He sat me down in the chair with CHUNKS of white conditioner in my hair.... took a huge paddle brush and used it to plastered my hair to my face while drying it. I walked out of there with my face breaking out from a reaction to all the crap he'd put in it and my hair was SOOO sticky and disgusting. My friends touched it and confirmed.
Oh, and the final sign he doesn't understand curls -- he took a big brush (yes brush) to my wet hair to rat out the curls. I cannoooottt stand it when stylists do this. You should NEVER use a brush on curly hair. You use a comb to gently get any knots out, unless you want to create tons of split hairs and wonder why you have frizz. UGH.
I have lived in a number of different cities and so I knew to check this site for the best curly hair stylist. NaturallyCurly has never steered me wrong, and Mark Marcell is no exception. He does an amazing job AND tells you what he is doing and WHY he does it so that you can style your hair the same way. He also gave great advice on color!
I spent MANY MANY years fighting my curls. I decided in the last few years that it is a battle that I don't want to fight anymore. I started doing research and had no clue there was a whole NETWORK of people out here with my same dilemma!! I started researching to find someone to cut and color my hair. Mark's name kept coming up over and over for the the Dallas area. I made an appointment and Mark cut and colored my hair. If you have curly hair you know how scary that can be because if a mistake is made, you will live with some crazy hair for a WHILE!! Mark did an AMAZING JOB. I am only 2 days out but honestly I couldn't be more happy. Not only did he cut my hair but we discussed HOW and when to wash my hair, how to use products in and and how to dry it. I am so excited to grow out my beautiful curls!! If you are looking for someone in the DFW area to cut your curly hair--I would HIGHLY recommend Mark Marcell. It is definitely worth it. (and yes Myles--your dad IS famous!) ;)
I have been going to Mark for almost 3 years. I drive all the way from Shreveport every few months to get my hair cut. I have never been disappointed!! He always offers simple styling tips and products to use. Thankfully I found him at his new location at Salon Boutique in Greenville. His business contact: 214-289-7836. I highly recommend him!!
I've cut my hair with Mark several times since moving to Dallas over a year ago. I used to work for naturallycurly in Austin before moving to Dallas, so I was lucky enough to know to check the website when looking for a stylist. From the results of my search, it was clear Mark was the best choice, so I called to make an appointment. Every time, the haircut has been consistently amazing and just what I want. I like to keep my hair long, although it can be thick and heavy, and Mark has never tried to convince me otherwise. He never cuts too much and always gives helpful tips to keeping my hair from looking weighed down. After working for the website, I thought I new just about everything about caring for my curls, but each time I visit Mark I learn more about how to take better care of my hair. Mark is the most cool, easy going, friendly stylists I have ever had. He knows what he is doing with your curls, and not only that, but he really enjoys it. I have never had another stylist even try to style my hair curly after a cut, and Mark takes the time to do it each visit. He even uses the best products to style with, and doesn't skimp on them either! He does not push the product on you, but he definitely does sell some of the top selling hair products at fair prices! I am very picky about my hair; used to cry almost every time it got cut, but I am so happy I found Mark who I can trust to take good care of my curls!!! If you are in or near Dallas, OR even far away….do your hair a favor and make an appointment with Mark! You will not be disappointed!
I just had my cut&color with Mark at his Plano location. He's cut my hair for more than a year now and each time he never fails to exceed my expectations! I recommend him to every curly head! I love that he has a teaching spirit and will instruct you on how to achieve the same look at home. Plus his prices are much more affordable than other curly stylists in the Metroplex. If you're trying to reach him for an appointment though, be aware that his Dallas location is closing and will be relocating to the Preston/Mockingbird(Greenville) area. The name of the salon is Salon Boutique and you can call him at 214-289-7836 to make an appointment. This change in location will be effective June 2014 and he will still be at Sola Salon in West Plano(Midway/W Parker Rd) on Tuesdays. Mark, thanks for a great cut&color!
I've tried other hair dressers and I came back to Mark. He knows curly hair and he can do conservative or edgy hair. I love that I can tell him what I like in a few descriptive words, what I don't like, and just leave the rest to him. I trust his knowledge and skill and will continue to go back to see him. I have an edgier hair cut and I get at least one compliment on my hair a week. A big part of that goes to Mark for being able to execute what I want out of my hair.
Mark is the greatest! I had just moved here after having a decent stylist in Nashville. Not great, but at least knew what she was doing about curly hair. After her, I knew I could never go back to random people just cutting my hair and chopping it to pieces. After all the rave reviews for Mark on here, I knew he had to be the first I gave a try. Well, looks like I can just throw out that last of runner-ups! :) Mark is great, personable, and teaches you how to get the look he gives you at home. He also gave me a list of the products he used in my hair if I wanted to use exactly what he did. But he doesn't push products on you. He told me to do whatever worked for me. He gave me plenty of tips and tricks for at home, too. With my hair style, the upper layer of curls has a tendency to "drop" when they get to a certain length, and it starts becoming very wide. Mark told me, with the cut he gave me, I'd probably need to come back in two months, as the curls would "drop" again. He couldn't have predicted it better! I've made my next appointment to fix the "dropping" and I'm excited and happy knowing that Mark will treat me right. If you're in the Dallas area with curly hair, you HAVE to let Mark cut your hair :)
Mark does a great job! I think he makes a huge difference over other people who’ve cut my hair. He’s really good at explaining things, too.
He is awesome!!! I have been growing out my hair for one year due to a pixie cut b/c I didn't know how to style my 3a hair and have been wearing it in a ponytail. Visit Marc and "ta-da" people say I love that hair. I'm never leaving this guy! You want to love your curls, go see MarK!
Mark does a great job cutting curly hair and knows what he is talking about. Thanks to him I have a cut that works with my hair texture and I also know how to style my hair! He took the time to show me how to style it and showed me products that I absolutely love! I have had a really hard time finding products that keep the frizz down but are not to stiff. He provided me with great products and I will definitely continue using those. Definitely give Mark a shot and I think that you will love him if you do!
OK, you can call him the "King of Kurl", "Wizard of Wave" or "Spinner of Sprirals"... whatever, this guy knows curl! He has them himself and there is nothing like experience! I love my cut. I've had this length and shape before but it is not the same cut. This is so much better than any haircut I've had. Mark really loves what he does and it shows. (He also really loves Myles (Happy Birthday!) He is patient and thorough. He makes sure you leave the salon with all your questions answered and you are equipped to "self-style" at home. All the positive reviews I've read about Mark were true. Thanks Mark. The salon is adorable, centrally located, and unpretentious.
Mark Marcell has been cutting my hair for three years. At 62 years of age, I have finally found my favorite hair stylist. I feel so special after a visit to Mark. He is able to capture the look I’m seeking even with the limitations of the quality of my hair. Additionally, Mark’s prices are reasonable and they have remained the same since Mark started fixing my hair.
I have had such a great experience! My hair cannot decide what it wants to do most days and it changes at different lengths. Mark knew how to cut it well. Recently I donated my hair, and he knew how to work with it to give me a great, short cut! 11 inches gone and and I am thrilled with my style! This was my second visit and I will definitely be going back!
My daughter is 12 years old and we've spent 10 of those years trying to find someone to help me with her hair!! I think mine is type 2C and hers maybe 3B or 3C......not sure. I have never known what to do with my wavy, curly, can be frizzy hair, but I have always been able to straighten it with no problem so I wear it straight most of the time. My daughter's hair, however, is very different from mine and anyone else's in our family (we can't find anyone who has hair like hers!!). It was like little lightening bolts when she was little and has now turned into more spiral curls but with frizz. In her 12 years, the length of her hair hasn't even made it to her shoulders. We have tried many different products, many different salons, and have attempted to straighten it. She has left salons in tears. With all of her friends having long, beautiful straight-ish hair she was beginning to develop a huge complex. On our journey to find anything or anyone to give us the "right" answers we found Mark!!! I have to admit I prayed really hard before her appointment.........we needed this to go well. I gave him my opinion and told him our experiences and then left he and my daughter to do their thing. Sitting in the waiting area, I could hear them chatting and was so amazed!! He had my daughter in full conversation about her hair, her activities, etc. When they were finished she was elated with the results, smiling from ear to ear!! I couldn't believe how happy she was and how willing she was to express it! Mark wrote down instructions and gave us suggestions on product (and the best part.....he never tried to up-sell us on products sold in the salon!!). My daughter's hair had never looked so healthy and she had a great experience. Its been 2 months and her hair STILL looks amazing!!!!! Her confidence has risen dramatically..............thank you Lord! I will now take my 2C hair to him and see what amazing things he can do with me so I can give my blow dryer and flat iron a rest. Thank you Mark.......you ROCK!!!!!
I have been going to Mark since 1999. In fact, I was the very first person to review Mark on this site way back in 2002, although that post isn't on here anymore. Anyway, I wanted to update...this past year I went through treatment for breast cancer and lost all my hair. All my beautiful 2A curls..gone. My hair is coming in now, and Mark has not only been there for me a friend, but gave me shampoo to use, told me what kind of product to use, and is helping me as I transition back to my old curly self. There is no stylist like Mark in this area. One who not only knows about curly hair, but also cares about his clients like family. He is the only person I would trust with my hair..period.
I am in tears over my hair cut! I was so excited after reading all the positive reviews. I look like I have a pom-pom on my head. I think this is the ugliest hair cut I have ever had! I don't know what to do. I can't stop crying!
I've been a client of Marc since I found him on this website almost 3 years ago. I am a latina with type 3A hair. My first haircut with him completely changed my image to a grown up look and I got so very many compliments! He truly understands curly hair and I can rely on a quick and perfect haircut everytime. I highly recommend you visit and see what Marc can do for you!
What? You have curly hair and you have never been to Mark Marcell at On the Avenue? What are you WAITING for? Let me tell you, my friend, you have never had a haircut like you will get from Mark. Not only that, but he will tell you things about curly hair and your hair in particular that you probably have never heard before. He's one of us! He has curly hair too! He speaks the language, is a member of congregation just like us! He will not only cut your hair perfectly but he will explain the products he uses on your hair (you can buy them there when you leave) and how to use them. He makes it SO SIMPLE! I bought all of the products and I am confident that I'll be able to do exactly what he did and my hair will look just as great when I'm doing it myself. Now I can clean out my bathroom cabinet and throw out all of those gels that stopped "working" for me. I'm so thrilled with my hair that I could just about cry happy crocodile tears. I feel like a new woman at the ripe old age of 47. Marc rocks!! I'm so blessed to have found him. Thanks to everyone on this site who reviewed him!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE MARK!!. For years I've had to wear my hair short because I could not find a stylist that would do a good looking haircut on long curly hair. What finally broke the dam were some scathing comments I overheard from a couple of girls at my university about my hair. So, I decided that I would do something about it. First, I took to my laptop to search for something that I could do to make my curly hair look good and so I came across this website which was a life saver. I found lots of cool tips and not only that I could look for the salon nearest me with reviews left by curly haired people!!! So I began to let my hair grow as long as I could stand it without it having any shape and then I went to "On the Avenue" to look for the well reviewed Mark. I LOVE MARK!!! I went in with a HUGE "DON'T" list: don't cut it short, don't thin it out, and don't leave it round at the back!!! I didn't even have to say anything, he took a look at my hair and said "Why is it that other stylist always do this? Look they thinned out your hair, and give you a tail, this looks like long mullet." And right there, on my dry hair he cut a section out, leaving it straight across. I knew I was in good hands as soon as he greeted me since he himself has curly hair. In less than an hour, he had cut it and styled it!!! I'm definitely coming back. He has become my new best friend. I RECOMMEND HIM TO ALL MY CURLY GIRLS OUT THERE, GO GO GO CHECK HIM OUT. You will not be disappointed trust me. I've lived in curly hair hell all my life (I'm 21 in case you wonder) and he has just turned it into a heaven.
I have been going to Mark for over a year now and would highly recommend him to anyone, especially anyone with naturally curly hair. I have kinky curly hair and have made it my lifelong mission to find a hairdresser that understands and knows how to handle it. Luckily, Mark has brought an end to my search and a beginning to a life of loving my curls!!! Thank you, Mark. Brittany
I'm new to the area, but when I saw the overwhelming number of positive review for Mark, I decided to give him a try. Three days into this new haircut, I'm very pleased with the results. I really appreciated his detailed styling instructions, and list of products he used on my hair. He wasn't overly pushy with the salon's products, another plus. The price for the haircut was very reasonable, and he obviously knew what he was doing with my hair. I'll definitely be going back to Mark.
After struggling for years with my daughters curls I hopped on the internet to hopefully find someone who really new how to cut naturally curly hair. We found Marc at On the Avenue in Dallas. My daughter and I were so excited in anticipation of the appointment with someone who may be able to solve some of the struggles she was facing. Marc was wonderful! He made my 13 y/o daughter feel comfortable enough to actually ask questions regarding the care of her curls. Marc didn't just start cutting either, he pulled up a stool and studied my daughters hair, evaluated the different types of curls she has and then asked her many questions. When the cutting started he was methodic and careful, making sure to cut in the correct place on the curl. At the end of the appointment Marc actually wrote down care instructions for my daughter that she has carefully placed on her mirror at home. My daughter looked great yesterday, and thanks to Marc's instructions, she looks great today! Thank you Marc!
I have never been so disappointed in my entire life. I feel like a bad jheri curl experience. I should have listened to my friend who told me not to cut it. I am used to getting my hair done in DC by stylists who know African-American hair. That was NOT what I found. He used the wrong products, didn't cut it according to any style and now I'm stuck! Braids - weave - something - here I come.
First of all, let me tell you that the salon itself is adorable. It is a small old house, but it has been remodeled and organized with such taste that you immediately feel at home. They offer you something to drink and the staff is super friendly. Then this curly headed man with adorable blondish ringlets and a great attitude comes to get you and takes you back to a little room. My bf was with me and Marc just took him along too. Then he listened to all the crap I had to say about my hair, and looked at my unrealistic pictures of what I wanted. I told him that I loved Afros and big big hair. I am a type 3a by the way. Then he gave me a shampoo, conditioned my hair (even though I cowash, I really didn't care) and started cutting my hair. I was sooooooo into the conversation with him about a million things, that I didn't even notice when he was done and started putting re:coil and other products in my hair. This is the moment when I started paying lots of attention cuz I really wanted to see how he would style my hair. He would explain to me what he was doing and why every step of the process. We just kept talking and then I noticed that he put so much more product than I ever would, and my skepticism began. I thought "there is no way this is gonna come out right" since he was not only putting tons of product ( the usual re:coil, gel, mousse) and he was just combing my hair with his fingers and even a comb and really working the product through, and I am just thinking, man he broke off all the curls cuz my hair can never withstand a lot of handling or I end up with frizzy stringy hair. He also styled my bangs and diffused my hair, and we were done. When I looked in the mirror, my hair looked great! I could not believe it. IT looked shiny, healthy, and DEFINED! The cut looked great too, even though it wasn't like the pics, but I understand that it was impossible for him to give me something like that if my hair is so damn short. Anyway, I am growing my hair, but the next cut will always be with Mark. He is the S(&^t. He is pretty cool too, not what you will expect at all. You will see, give him a try!
Found Mark on NaturallyCurly.com and the reviews were right. I wasn't able to see my regular stylist in Austin and was visiting Dallas, so I decided to try Mark. Incredibly knowledgeable. Easy to talk to and great info on how to better use product and style my curly locks. Would totally see him again!
I have been to a stylist before. The salon is nice and I was offered something to drink on arrival. There was a short wait, but it was worth it. Mark told me all about what I can do to get nice curly hair at home. He told me what he was doing and what product he was using. My hair looks wonderful and I can use the tips he gave me at home to keep it looking nice. I'm so glad I found out about him from this site.
I went to this stylist on the recommendation of many of the curly girls on Salon Finder. Whilst I have no negative comments, I was not as impressed as the other girls were. It was probably the quickest haircut I have ever had; the salon did not look particularly clean and I cant say my cut was any better than any other haircut I have had in the past. The haircut was so quick that I asked Marc at the end if he was done (so quickly).
Count this as another recommendation to see Mark if you have curly hair! For as long as I can remember getting my hair cut I have always gone to see stylists who did not get my curly hair. A lot of them recommended flat irons and straightening treatments, or would just blow dry my hair straight to avoid dealing with my curls. They cut my hair the same way ... for straight hair. Mark gets curly hair, and he walked me through how he would cut my hair, what he used, and how he styled it. It was really laid back and comfortable, and when I left I had a cut that looked good after he styled it ... and more importantly looked good after I styled it! I love my new do, and for the first time in years can wear my hair down with out having zero volume at the roots. Do not question it. Just go! He is affordable, he listens, and he gets it. Really.
I finally made the decision to become a real adult and search for a stylist that was known for curly hair capabilities. In the past, I could always get away with cheap hair cuts. But I needed a good style since it had been so long. A friend of mine told me about this website, another curly, and so I searched for someone close to my zip. Time after time, Mark's name kept reappearing. I could not be more pleased with Mark!! The entire visit was easy, relaxed, no pressure, some good tips that I had never heard of (shocking!) and in the end....didn't have to empty out my pockets to pay for such a good looking cut. I have never received so many compliments!! DEFINITELY going back again and again!
After reading all of the positive reviews here about Mark at On the Avenue I decided to give him a call and make an appointment. I drove 3 hours to Dallas just to see him and it was MORE than worth it! For the first time in my life I have an awesome hair cut! After posting my picture of my new 'do on facebook I got comments from people who never respond to anything I write! ha! Everyone loves it, and best of it it feels so great! Mark is so laid back and really makes you feel at ease. He took time to talk to me about my hair before hand and explained everything he was going to do before he did it. He explained what I was doing wrong and what I could do at home to improve my curls. He's very down to earth and a joy to work with! I have cried more times than I can count over my hair in the past, but this time my smile was big enough to light up Dallas! Thanks so much, Mark!
I saw the glowing reviews on the site and decided to give Mark a try. I really had a great experience-as Mark was cutting my hair he told me so many things that I didn't know I could do to take care of my hair. My hair was in an awkward growing out phase and he gave me a great cut that will grow out well and won't need a lot of maintenance. I love the way my hair looks now and will definitely be back.
I went to Mark the end of last year based reviews on here. I have to say that in my 31 years of curly hair battle I loved my hair cut for the first time!! I went back right before I moved to New Jersey. I went to another place in D.C. while I was visiting and while it was a decent haircut it didnt have the natural wow factor Mark somehow got out of my curls. I am now crossing my fingers that he has an opening for me while I'm visiting next week. I highly recommend him!!!!
Let me just begin by saying that I have had some pretty bad haircuts in my day, so Im always very nervous about having someone cut my curly hair, but I read some reviews and decided to bite the bullet and see what the hype was all about. I am so glad I did. Mark is amazing. He made me feel so at ease ( i was super nervous) and explained everything he did. He got rid of all my dead ends, gave it shape, and made it look pretty again. ( i had a lot of straight heat damaged ends that made my curls horrible, and he fixed it). Its shorter than I am use to, but at least its healthy now, and when it grows out, its going to be beautiful. If you have curly hair, make an appt. immediately... you will not regret it. Another thing i enjoyed is that he doesnt push products on you, and tells you cheaper alternatives that you can get to achieve the same results. I love him. Hes got a client for life!
My other half has the prettiest blond curls (just like Mark), but if he gets a bad hair cut, we deal with what he calls "mushroom head", looking like a Gumba off of Mario Bros. He's been going to Mark for hair cuts for about 4-5 years now, after his last stylist left there, and his hair has never looked better! I'm going to start going to him, myself (even though I'm not a curlhead like my other half). He is very reasonably priced and DOESN'T push product, which I LOVE! Mark rocks!
I can confirm every other review about Mark - he's awesome. He is knowledgeable, fun and gives excellent hair cuts. If you have curly hair that frustrates you, this is who you want an appointment with!
I found Mark through a friend who visited another stylist at On the Avenue. She told me that was a guy that was cutting curly hair every time she went in to her stylist. I have normal/fine hair, but a combo of s-shaped waves and corkscrews. After years of stylists not having a clue what to do with my hair (years of choosing between stacked bobs or "Christmas tree head") it's a relief to find someone in DFW who knows curly hair and doesn't pressure you into wearing it straight. When I sat down, he explained why it wasn't behaving, and how we were going to fix it. When he asked about lengthhpreferences, etc, I told him "whatever you think is best" - I'm glad that I did. My hair has never looked this good since I've lived in Dallas. He didn't pressure me to buy product ("mousse is mousse, even it's $5.99) and that's very refreshing. Good experience, fantastic haircut.
I chose Mark to cut my curly hair from all the glowing reviews on this website. When you're a curly girl, there's something about having your curls cut by a curly kindred spirit. Mark is spot on when it comes to attending to curly hair. He listens to what you want and educates about curly care as he works his magic. Will I be a repeat customer? My curls demand it.
I moved to Dallas over a year ago, leaving a wonderful stylist behing me. Parting with her was so difficult becuase I knew that finding a replacement that knew what they were doing, even in a large city, would be challenging. After three horrible hair cuts from three different stylists, I turned to the internet and found Mark. He had so many great reviews that I had to give it a shot. First of all, I liked the feel of the salon. It has a bohemian/easy feel, not at all snooty. The in-hourse curly Guru, Mark, is great! He gets it because he has curly hair, himself, and knows what curly hair needs. Most people do not comment on the color, cuts or changes that I normally make to my hair, but I got so many after my first visit to Mark. Give him a shot! He's not pricy and you will love the results!
Being the Queen of the Chi and having had my unruly hair straight for a year I happened into the salon by accident. Watching Mark work with curly hair- I decided to give it another go. Mind you I have spent hundreds of dollars on products to produce pretty curls. On a whim I booked a shampoo blow dry as I was getting on a plane to the beach for a photoshoot there. It was a big risk but it paid off- My hair rocked for four straight days in humidty and getting wet. My pics went on facebook and I got comments on how gorgeous my hair was. I am now hooked and will continue to run in for my curly look. Mark is amazing!
I felt at ease the minute I saw this curly headed guy! I was also given an education that I've never had before for my hair. My appointment was about 45 minutes and its the best time my hair has EVER had!!! I made another appointment and I left a happy curly girl. Yep I like this guy!☺☺☺

Okay so put down the computer and call right now! You will absolutely love Mark and your hair will look amazing! I have been searching for a good stylist in Dallas for years and I have finally been able to stop looking now that I found Mark. Your hair will thank you and so will your significant other! When I came home my husband said, wow, your hair looks awesome!
Mark is amazing. My hair has never looked better. I had a really bad cut that was making my hair do all sorts of weird things. He instantly knew what had be done and how to fix it. I walked out of there with bouncy curls and loving my hair. I also took my three old daughter to him and he has a wonderful personality that endeared her to him. She went in scared of the situation and walked out saying she felt like princess. And her hair is cute, cute, cute. I definitely recommend Mark for anyone with curly hair. You won't regret it.
I am a hairdresser whore. Mark has been the only hairdresser able to keep me and my curly hair happy:)
If you have curly hair, then I don't need to explain desperation. I have fought with my hair FOREVER and will and have done everything to make it simple and beautiful, or at least beautiful. A family member of mine that lives in the Dallas area told me about Mark. After reading his reviews I made the 3 hour drive to see him. Well, after seeing him 3 times now in the last 6 months, I am hooked! The first time I went to his Dallas salon, but now I see him in Plano since it's closer to where my family lives. I wish he was closer, but he is worth every mile. I never thought my hair would be easy and beautiful. Give him a call, he is worth it! 214.289.7836
Mark is so down-to-earth and fun to talk to, you forget that you made an "appointment" to get your hair done. He is the first curly hair dresser I've been to that actually has curls himself! I NEVER have to say "don't bother drying it" when what I really mean is "I have places to go and can't manage a fluffy hairdo". He knows just how to let my curls be themselves. He listens to what I want out of my cut, pairs it with what my hair needs and VIOLA; a great cut every time.
I just got back from my second haircut with Mark and I am so thrilled to have found him. I have never been this excited about a haircut. I have been to several different people in the past who never quite knew how to blow dry my hair and I was always forced to put my hair up in a pony tail as soon as I got in the car. This has not been the case with Mark, it looks great when he is done with it. Last time he cut my hair, I had sooooo many people comment on it. He really knows what he is doing.
WOW! This guy is for real!!! From the time I got there, til I walked out the door, all I saw were curls. The girl before me had just got finished and looked amazing, and while I was leaving a girl walked in with curls saying she was here to see Mark. I felt comfortable the minute I saw him, He has curls too! Mark takes his time to make sure you understand each step and is so laid back which makes the experience so amazing! Anyhow, take a number cause he is good. I also found out he works in Plano as well, which will work better for me. Thanks Mark! Give him a call; Dallas: 214.599.0013 Plano: 214.289.7836
I recommended my mom to Marc and she absolutely loved him. She has gone back 3 times already. She has short curly hair and now, instead of it growing out all crazy like (bushy), it grows out in nice, soft, big curls. Also this is the first stylist that finally got an amazing hair color for her!
Overall, I had a wonderful experience at the salon. Mark was as great as everyone else has shared. It had been about 2yrs since I've had my hair cut. We took off about 5 inches and I can say that my curls are happy! :) The thing I appreciated about Mark the most was the time he took to tell me what products I needed, why I needed them, and how to apply them. I've not received that from any stylist. Also, when I asked about when I should schedule again, he didn't give me the standard 'in three months' answer. He basically said, "You'll know. One day your curls will look amazing and the next they won't. Your hair will tell you when it's time." Thanks Mark! I've recommended you to three other curly friends so far!
One word: AMAZING! I am 28 years old and I finally had an amazing haircut! Mark is super sweet, easy to talk to, and has a lot of great advice and tips on curly hair! I will definitely go back to him from now on.
I have lived in Dallas for 16 years and up until I found Marc I was never satisfied with leaving my hair curly and would spend hours a week straightening my hair. Now that I have him in my life I almost never blow out my hair because I love the way he makes my curly hair come to life! Not only a great stylist but a great person as well and the salon owner, Leslie, is FABULOUS as well. You really can't get better than On The Avenue/Marc!
I found Mark through this website. I am SO glad I did! I took my 11 year old daughter to Mark. I have very straight hair and I was at a loss on how to care for her VERY curly hair. She was nervous about getting her hair cut, but Mark developed an excellent relationship with her right away and I could tell she trusted him. She got an awesome cut! Mark let me know the best way to take care of her beautifully styled hair. When her brother saw her, he told her she was beautiful. It made me cry. Thanks, Mark!
You know how you go on a first date and think, wow, this is good but you don't want to get your hopes up? Well, now after seeing Marc 3 times, I can say we now have a curly hair relationship. We actually skipped the honeymoon phase and moved on to the real meal deal. I have not been happy with a hairdresser for a long time until I found Marc. I realize the difference is that, like a good partner, Marc LISTENS. He understands what is best for YOUR hair, not what is best for the way he cuts. I appreciate his openness. Plus, he's a fun guy. I hope to be a client of Marc's for a long time to come.
Marc does a great job cutting my naturally curly hair. He knows exactly what to do with it! He also listens to what I want. Marc does a great blowout too, when you want your hair straight for a few days!
I went to Marc about 4 hours ago today and absolutely loved him. Everyone noticed my haircut and loved it! He asks you how you want your hair cut, which if you are like me, I always say however because I really don't know how curly hair should be cut. He explained to me how he was going to cut it and why he was going to cut it that way. My favorite part was he also explained all of the products he was using and why. This was my favorite part because I have searched my entire life for a good product! Marc is a down to earth guy and super nice. I highly recommend him!
I Love Mark and I love my curls. He is a down to earth guy. It seems only natural to trust someone with curls to cut your curls! I have had three haircuts and I am still in "hair' love. He is extremely fair on price, making the "hair" love even stronger! Thanks Marc!
I agree with all the reviews here. This guy is awesome. I was really mad at my hair and really wanted to chop it all off after growing it out because it wouldn't do anything that I wanted it to do. I read all the reviews here and thought why not. I am so glad I decided to go. My hair hasn't looked this good in years. He really listened to what I had to say and even looked at previous haircut pictures that I brought with me to help in deciding what would be best for me. He even took the time to evaluate my hair and showed me how to style it. For once I do not feel like a quota in a salon. I am definitely returning to him from now on. Thanks Mark :)
Marc was great. I found reviews here about different places I could try for a curly haircut in the Dallas, TX area. I decided to try going to Marc, and I am glad I did. He knows how to cut curly hair. Marc did a great job. I highly recommend Marc.
Marc is exactly like everyone says; professional, informative, friendly, and amazing with curly hair!!! I already had a great stylist, but after finding Marc through this website, I decided, "Why not try him out?". I had a very funky fro type hairstyle that I loved, but wanted to try something extremely different. I wanted to cut it all off into a frohawk type style. Being that I have a very eclectic, funky style, I was afraid that he might be a more contemporary, simple type cutter. Wow was I wrong!!! This guy gave me a rockin haircut that I absolutely love!!! He's amazing and can do anything! I look forward to having him as my new hairstylist. Thanks Marc!!!
I live in the British Virgin Islands and was going to vacation in Dallas. I decided to check out Marc Marcell, due to his excellent reviews on this site. I must say I was not disappointed at all!! I have had trouble finding someone who knew how to cut my naturally curly hair properly. Marc did a wonderful job! He even took the time to recommend products that would help with my new shorter hairstyle and help me look FABULOUS all the time. As an absolute bonus, Marc is a genuinely nice guy and made me feel at home at his salon. I would recommend Marc to anyone who has curly hair, he knows his stuff!! I would also like to add that I was late to my appointment due to my doctors appointment running over and Marc rearranged his clients until I arrived, so that I could still get my hair cut. What a guy !!! I plan to be in Dallas in December and I will make sure to give On the Avenue a call so that I can maintain my cut. Robin
I just started going to see Mark about 2 months ago. He is hands down the BEST at cutting curly hair!! Anyone with curls knows how hard it is to find someone that understands how it needs to be cut, and what it needs to be styled. Like many others, I'm sure, I've been frustrated getting cuts from people that just don't get it. Mark totally gets it! He also gave me some great tips for dealing with my curls every day. To top it all off, he's a really great guy! :)
I have to say. He's the only stylist that I've found who knew how to cut and style curls and explained every step to allow me to keep the great look he gave me, at home. I highly recommend a trip to see Mark, whether you have curls or not. I look forward to many return visits!!
Mark has been my stylist for years and years now, so he knows that though I'm naturally curly, I typically head for the straightener. On my most recent visit to Mark, I said, "I think I'm gonna go for the curly look (embrace my natural style)!" He was ecstatic, to say the least, so that made me feel good about my decision. About 15 to 20 minutes later, he was all done. Quick and easy. We let my hair naturally dry, and after a few minutes, the curls just sprung up. It looked fabulous! I've gotten so many compliments on the curly cut. I also tried it straight, and it looks just as awesome. I love it. I can work two looks for the price of one! I think he's just so skilled in creating a cut that works both ways, straight and curly. The curls are working out great for me. I think I'm a changed girl. I definitely recommend Mark to a curly head or straight head. You're sure to meet a guy who's cool, laid-back, totally unpretentious and awesome.
I stumbled upon Mark through my husband when my stylist moved out of town. My husband and Mark were friends before he became a stylist and Mark has been cutting his hair for 8 years. I have only been to Mark 3 times now and as long as I live in Dallas, Mark will be my stylist. Not only is he a great stylist, he's a great conversationalist as well. I always leave the salon feeling pampered and fresh. If you are looking for a down-to-earth stylist that knows what he's doing, look no further.
I gotta give it to Mark; he's the best there is for curls! I always leave the salon feeling on top of the world with the best hair in town! My curls love him and so do I. If you have curls, do yourself a favor and don't wait; book an appointment now. You won't be sorry.
Mark is awesome! He cut my hair and it looks great. I have never been to a stylist that actually knows curly hair. He knows how to cut it and how to style it. I am very happy with my hair and I will continue to see Mark. I definitely recommend him to anyone who has curly hair and is tired of the "looks good at the salon, but what am I going to do at home" feeling. I have been there, done that!
--240 monthly haircuts and styles over a decade and a half since I was 16 years old. --20 plus stylist and 18 (+ or -) salons from New York to Dallas to San Francisco. --1 name sticks out: MARK MARCELL Where has he been since I started the battle for the PERFECT cut and style of my curly hair? Well, I am not going to live in the past, but I sure know where I will be going in the future!!! Not only does he, himself have curly hair and the ablility to empathize with his clients, but he has a true natural talent plus years of experience to bring the curl to a desired control. I was at ease the second I sat in his chair. I pepperd him with questions for what he wanted to do to achieve the desired results I have so long been looking for in a cut and style. From his responses, I could tell that he was not just talented; not just had experience; but continually educating himself on the latest and greatest in procedure and product knowledge. But really, who cares what he knows and says. The proof was made certain, not only when I walked out the door, but by the numerous complements I recieved by both man and woman. He truely was worth the search and suggestion I took to go see him!!! If you have curly hair--(or for that matter)--or not, but might have some of the same "HAIR HISTORY," I might suggest checking Mark out!! I just ask, please do not take my monthly time slot!!!!! Good luck out there, -Hunter L.
When I moved to Dallas six months ago I thought it would take me AGES to find a stylist who could deal with my hair. I've got long curls that I never blowdry, so it takes a good cut to keep it looking decent. Mark is awesome, and also totally fun to visit. Amazingly for Dallas.....you actually leave with money left in your checking account after the cut is over. I also get all my color done with Mark and have been really happy with those results, too. DEfinitely check him out.
I feel extremely fortunate to have found Mark. I, like so many others with naturally curly hair, had been searching for the stylist that really understood how to cut and style my hair. Finally a friend referred me to Mark, the curl genius! He does a tremendous job - cuts, color and styling! If you are looking for someone who will work wonders with your hair, look no further!
I have been a loyal follower of Mark since 1999. He is the only person I trust with my curls. I have gone through stages of chin length as well as shoulder length and anything in between and I get compliments wherever I go. Mark rocks! And he can also do your color. Go see him..you won't be sorry.
I found Mark here and then hunted him down. Here is his cell number in case you need it 214.289.7836. He splits time between Dallas and Plano. Really like the shorter hair and get a lot more curl.
