I just got my email that my new stylist (I finally found someone that can handle my monster mane of curls!) is leaving Proper and going to a salon called Primp. I told her I would follow her wherever she went - and I meant it. Mychal is the curly hair whisperer. I love that I can just book on line with her anytime and also reschedule easily if I have to. So easy. MYCHALPINK.COM

I have course, thick, and BIG curly hair. My daughter is a little luckier with her more fine, fluffy curls and Mychal can make our hair look fantastic. We've both been going steady with her now for almost 2 years at Proper Salon (first found her reviewed on here) and am happy to report that she is doing her own on line booking now. No more having to call and play phone tag at the salon, just go to www.mychalpink.com and book your own appointment. Much more efficient.

I hadn't gotten my hair cut at a salon since the fifth grade--I'm now a college junior. I was here visiting my parents from break and took the plunge. My hair looks phenomenal, and Mychal was so sweet. She talked through what she was doing, and she totally understood that I was completely nervous. My hair has never looked better, and I will be getting my hair cut here permanently, even though I live in UT. It was that good.

I feel horrible leaving this review, but I'm incredibly disappointed. I scheduled with Mychal expecting a great cut based on all the comments here, and I left wishing I'd never gone in for the cut at all. All I wanted was for my curls to be shaped a little and for the ends to be trimmed, expecting a normal dry cut since I have very thick 3B hair. She proceeded to COMB THROUGH my dry hair and add big, choppy layers to what was now a mess of stretched-out frizz. I lost about six months' worth of hard-earned hair growth (I've been trying to grow it out for several years), and my hair is now a stringy mess with way less curl definition. I went from looking like a pretty solid 3B to a messy, frizzy form of 3A. Luckily she does have a policy where she'll fix a cut for free within two weeks. I do not, however, plan on taking advantage of this, as I know it would just mean her cutting my hair even shorter. I'm just going to let it grow back on its own, regardless of how crappy it looks, and then look for a better salon to get it evened out in a few months.

Like many of you with curly hair know, it's hard to get a good, nevermind great, haircut. I go for months without getting my haircut because the "last" one just didn't do something right and inevitably my hair grows out terribly. I had been feeling my hair was getting to long, frizzy and just plain dumpy looking but it took a visit from my mom to confirm that feeling. I told her I had looked on Naturallycurly.com and found Proper Salon, but just hadn't followed through with making an appt. She said go for it and so I boldly booked with Twila after reading a dazzling review for her. Why did I wait so long? I wish I had a before and after picture to show you because I was seriously transformed! All the stylists cut hair dry before they wash and style it - brilliant. I highly recommend Twila - she's a delight and really takes the time to cut your hair - she knows curly hair!

Oh my gosh! Twila rocked my socks, err, curls off! I'm in Portland for the weekend...and have this itch for an awesome layered cut. I have a severe phobia of going to the salon because of too many botched curly cuts. So bad, I the last time I had a cut was from a friend THREE years ago. Before that, it had been another three years. It just takes so long to recover from the bad ones! So I got on here looking for a place to go that might *fingers crossed* have a last minute opening while I am in town. I saw all the raving reviews for Chai & Mychal. I called & Twila answered. She said they weren't available, but would I be willing to see someone else? That they all have been trained in curly hair & do dry cuts. Sold. She had me at dry cuts. I was a bit apprehensive, I'm not going to lie, just because I couldn't find anything on her curly magic. Lately I've been feeling the need for a change. I have 3B long hair that gets weighed down at the top and lots of volume at the bottom. Dramatic layers is what I wanted. She was so enthusiastic, and has a whimsical movement and aura to her cutting. Like it flows from her whole body. Anyways. I tried to keep my cool as she was taking a good 6"+ off for the shortest layer. Tiny bits of anxiety, eyes watering, throat burning building up. But I asked for it & concealed my fright well! Boy am I glad. It came out far better than I could have ever imagined! She kept my length in the back and fixed me up good! I will be back all the way from Seattle!

Stylist: Chai

Chai's got it ALL, people!!! What do you want? She can do it. Don't know what you want? She'll give you something awesome. She's: a curly girl herself so she *gets it*, a great listener, creative, intuitive. She uses curly girl-method-approved products, will give you product recommendations but won't do the hard-sell like so many stylists do (or like so many salons force their stylists to do). She's the curl expert. I walked into the salon on my first trip and the receptionist took one look at my hair and was all, "You're here to see Chai, aren't you?" I've got 3B type curls, shoulder length now. She's really perceptive and intuitive--she listens to my hair! She does a sort of "hair assessment" when I come in, which is how I knew I could trust her the moment I sat down in her chair. She played with my hair for a few minutes, frizzing some parts out to see how it acts, pulling some straight to see how it springs, and essentially working her way around my scalp to see what kind of curls I have. Within a minute she had recognized that the hair at the nape of my neck is actually pretty straight (so that she has to cut it shorter than the rest to avoid giving me a mullet--which has happened to me SO MANY TIMES), that the hair on the left side of my head grows faster than the right, and where I had areas of thicker hair growth. She dry-cut my hair first for the main shape, and then after washing and conditioning (or just conditioning, if I'd recently no-poo'd), she trims wet to even things out. Listening to my hair like that means my style looks incredible as it grows out. I've been going in to see her about every 3 months for the last year and a half. One of these days, I'll ask her to do a short style and I won't be the least bit worried that I'll end up with a mop or Q-tip, and the grow-out will be fine. Her name is pronounced SHAY, like shea butter. Go see her! She's Chai-mazing!

I have difficult VERY thick, wavy, frizzy hair. I wanted to get it "thinned" but by someone who understands curly hair. I found Mychal through the wonderful reviews on this site. Mychal cut my hair today for the first time and I was definitely impressed! Her knowledge of curly, frizzy hair was excellent. She took a lot of time to do a few different cutting techniques to thin my hair and took time to explain "tips" to me on managing and styling my hair type. I highly recommend Mychal and look forward to going back for color and future cuts!

Mychal has been cutting my hair for over 10 years. She started when she lived in CA (where I live) and once she moved to Portland, I thought I would have to start all over again with a new stylist. As luck would have it, my daughter also moved to Portland! Now I get to have her cut it at The Proper Salon everytime I visit. No matter how long and unruly my mane gets, I don't dare cut it elshere. Mychal knows how to cut all different curl types and really listens to style challenges. She is also very good about educating with new trends and how to care for curls. Additionally, she's a joy to visit/is very good with current affairs and pop culture!

I had heard many good things about The Proper and from what I had observed the other staff seemed very competent and stylish so I the next time I needed a haircut I called and asked the receptionist who had the most experience cutting curly hair - and I ended up with Mychal who is AMAZING. FIVE STARS (can I give her six?). She completely understood how my unruly hair falls and was able to work with it - and managed to cut it exactly how I had envisioned it, something that seems surprisingly hard to find at Portland salons. She's also super friendly without being overly chatty and you feel very comfortable around her. She was eventually able to totally fix my previous highlights disaster. I really can't say enough good things about her. I had been asking stylists for YEARS to cut my hair so that it defines my curl but doesn't get "fluffy" and had resigned myself to the idea that it was impossible. I mentioned to Mychal that I wanted to enhance the curl in my hair, thinking it was impossible based on my previous stylists, and voila! she did it perfectly! Also...my color is amazing! I have medium-brown hair that tends to turn red when highlighted, Mychal used a chemist-worthy color recipe to add highlights and depth to my hair WITHOUT turning it red! Cut and color expert in one person?! Yes, it's true! I have really difficult curlyish big hair and its very hard to find a salon or stylist I trust with my hair. Mychal is a god-send for me. Plus, Mychal has very reasonably prices...a woman's haircut is about $40 and is worth every penny - and is significantly cheaper than other salons or stylists with the same level of experience.. Bottom Line: Great salon, Great Prices, Great staff - just make sure you follow recommendations about who to go to for your curly hair needs!

At last someone who understands how to tame my mane! Mychal stikes that balance between knowing what will look best based on my hair and face type and excuting the style that I desire. Proper Salon is a great salon in general but Mychal really knows what she is doing with a person who has curly hair. Her cuts are decently priced and I never walk out with anything less than amazing. She really has an eye for great cuts. I have sent several friends (both curly and straight hair) there and everyone agrees that she gives a great hair cut. Be sure to ask for a scalp massage too, she is top noch with that as well.

I wore my hair long for years and recently, Mychal cut my hair in a short A-line, bob. It's fantastic! I get compliments all the time and I always pass on her number. since she also has naturally curly hair she really knows how to cut it well. And she takes time to talk about the exact cut you want before she starts.

I have been wearing my hair long for many years now and have always had a difficult time finding a stylist to do a good job on my curls. I recently went to Mychal, who is new at the salon, but she has many years experience. She cut my hair into an a-line bob and it is the most adorable and fun style I have had in a long time. It really suits me and I have been getting non-stop compliments. She herself, has curly hair so she understands and talks through exactly what you want before she begins. Mychal is also fun to chat with while you are there. Highly recommended. I have sent a few people her way.

I just went to see Chai for the first time. I was nervous because 1, I'd never had a dry cut before and 2, it was my first time seeing a stylist other than the one I'd been going to for years in Seattle. But I could not be happier. Chai was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and fun. As soon as she put her hands on my hair, I knew she would be great. I told her I was thinking about doing an inverted bob, and we talked about whether or not it would work on me. As we were still talking, she said "I'm going to just start cutting if that's ok with you." She did! I almost backed out as soon as I started seeing long pieces of my curls fall to the floor, but I'm so glad I didn't. I think it's the best cut I've ever had! And she wrote down a bunch of names of products for me to try too. I can't wait to go back!

I've lived in the area for 5 years now and Chai is the first stylist I've come across who did a dry cut! She seemed extremely knowledgeable about curls and wasn't afraid to work with my curls. I am amazed with the results. She gave me exactly the look I've been trying to get for forever. I highly recommend her to any curly girl.

A couple of months ago I had tried to get an appointment with Chai (based on her great reviews) but our schedules didn't mesh. The Proper receptionist was so kind and told me that they were available with other curly stylist if my search for a highly rated stylist didn't work out. I then found a stylist with great reviews at another salon. I live in a small town so I was driving 300 miles and staying overnight at a Portland hotel for this haircut. Minutes before my appointment at the "other" salon, they called my cell phone to notify me that the stylist was sent home sick and they had no other curly stylists available. You can imagine how frustrated I was... and desperate! Since I was in Portland without an appointment any longer, I called the Proper with my fingers crossed. Frenchie LaTourneau was available so I gratefully accepted the timeslot. Frenchie was terrific. We've all had terrible haircuts so I was surprised at how confidently she approached my hair. It was clear that she knew what she was doing. I would definitely recommend Frenchie!!

I finally found a stylist that is not afraid of my curly hair!! Chai understands curly hair and knows how to cut it to get the best bounce out of my beautiful curls. Thanks Chai!

Just an FYI to Portlanders everywhere, Chai has moved from Bliss to the Proper Salon in Portland. I just got my hair cut there and, as usual, she did an AMAZING job!! She can always make my curls bouncier by the time I leave. She has an amazing knowledge of curly hair and how to handle it. I would recommend her to ANYONE who is having trouble finding a stylist who understands how to cut and style their curly hair!!!
