I saw Kristy back in November for what was supposed to be a DevaCut. I have almost shoulder-length 3C curls. My mom (also curly, short, probably 2B/2C) had previously had a great experience with Kristy, but mine was not so great. Maybe Kristy was having an off day when I saw her, but what I got was definitely not a DevaCut at all. She grabbed huge hunks of hair and snipped across many ringlets all at once instead of cutting curl-by-curl. She also was extremely rough, and my scalp hurt from how much she was tugging at my hair (I'm not tender-headed, by the way). The woman who washed my hair also pulled and tugged the conditioner through my hair instead of gently scrunching it though like you're supposed to with CGM. Kristy proceeded to talk about how "crazy" they are at DevaChan in NY, and how they make hairstyling into "some kind of religion or something." By the end of my cut, my hair was completely frizzed out, and my curls had so little definition that I just looked like a frizzball. Extremely unhappy with my experience, and so upset that my mom, who was gifting me this haircut, had to pay for what was one of the worst haircuts I've ever had. If you have to go to Nola's for a Devacut, please see Jannah instead. She has a ton of awesome reviews and I wish I had seen her instead of Kristy.

Stylist: Hanna Youn

Before Hanna, I would color and cut my hair myself as it seems everyone I've tried is cluless about surly hair. I have *never* found a stylist that I have returned to so many times as Hanna. I made an appointment at this salon based on a review of another stylist there trained in the Deva Curl method - but Hanna was recommended when she was unavailable. I was extremely nervous upon meeting her given that she did not have curly hair, but her experience and knowledge were apparent upon talking to her. She not only knows how to cut curly hair - she is amazing with color as well. I typically make an appointment with her and tell her - "Do whatever you think is best!". If you try Hanna, please tell her I sent you! Cheers - Jenny H.

I called to schedule an appointment with Jannah, but she no longer works at Nolas. The receptionist recommended Gabby instead, and I had a GREAT experience with her. Gabby is a doll, and she has naturally curly hair herself which she treats with the Deva line. In a week, she'll be going to NYC to become Deva certified so I'm excited that I chose the right stylist. Gabby gave me an amazing haircut, even without the Deva training. She's a life-saver - my hair was a MESS before Gabby: a million layers, split ends, and some heavy sections that were weighing down my curls. But Gabby repaired it beautifully, and gave me a haircut that FINALLY brought the curls out in my canopy. She patiently had a detailed consultation with me, and gave me a realistic plan to deal with growing out my hair. She's a great listener, she only trimmed what absolutely had to be trimmed. I highly recommend Gabby - she's incredibly talented and a joy to chat with. Also, Nolas sells the Deva product line in the salon - a bonus!

Stylist: Jannah Dunbar
Rating:

Jannah is by far the most fantastic and gifted hair stylist for naturally curly hair. Jannah takes time with curls and sculpts as an artist to make each curl just right. She has an admirable natural intuition to tie in one's personality to the hairstyle. In addition; Jannah has a sparkling personality which makes each visit a joy. I highly recommend Jannah and her expertise with curly hair. She is the best hair stylist I have ever had.

Jannah is a Deva-cutting machine! she has a cult following around DC, and has recently joined the staff at Nola's. I am so happy i found her at her new salon. Jannah has the whole package...she's smart and funny, laid back and cool, and her deva work is outstanding. could not be happier with her.
