This is an overdue review! I went to Leslie for the first time in September. As I entered the salon she promised me she could change my hair, health and look-wise, and she definitely kept her promise! I showed her a photo of a hairstyle I liked while adding she can do whatever she thinks is best. Oh my gosh, I was so pleased with the result. I couldn't stop shaking my head back and forth, seeing how my curls actually LOOKED like curls. Am I going back? Heck yes! Should you go as well? Double Heck Yes!

I've now been to Leslie Ellen twice and am twice thrilled! So, the basics are that she gave me a great cut both times, and while that is a big deal enough for a curly girl, I'll go back for more reasons than just a good cut. The first time I went I had not had my 3b/a curls cut professionally in over 2 years....this is not my longest avoidance of the shears, but a pretty average wait for me. I am one of the many walking wounded with more bad cuts I can shake a wide-toothed comb at. No one ever listened to my pleas to not cut the top too short...the bottom layers are 3a and just will not curl up like the top, just one of the many struggles I had to grit my teeth against to go get a hair cut. So I decided to try Leslie Ellen after I read "clairewithcurls" review below. Leslie Ellen began with a standard consultation...what do you want to do....and my usual response was I'm not sure was met with a wonderfully honest and perceptive response. She noted how my hair did not reflect the person I seemed to express with my clothing, jewelry, etc. She noted my ambivalence and said we could just 'clean it up' or....and then proceeded to show me a shape that would match who I was. I knew I could trust her. Her observations of me as a whole person, not just a mass of curls, her attention to the variations in my curl pattern, and her acceptance of where I draw the line (no coloring, no straightening) earn her top grades. The shop she is in is less than perfect, but look, it's about getting the best cut and care so you can walk around with a great look for months. I'm happy to lose the bells and whistles of the fancy 'curly' salons for a great cut. Oh, and while I did go back after 10 weeks, my hair still looked good. I've never before left a cut and didn't have to restyle, trim something, etc. I walked in and had my dream of a hair stylist telling me what would work with my hair, my style, my life. Amazing!

Leslie Ellen did wonders for my curly hair! I came in with hair that was all the same length, sans layering, and she created an amazing layered look. I think this is the first haircut I've ever truly liked! Everyone loves my new cut; even a stranger came over to me to tell me that I have great hair!

I came in for a cut with Leslie, it turned out to be my best haircut ever! I have 3b curls, and it's always nerve-wracking to try a new stylist as things can go horribly wrong. From the start, it was clear that Leslie knew exactly what she was doing. She was able to take pictures I had of an inverted bob I'd seen online, and combine that with elements of a previous cut I had really liked to create a brand-new, exciting, stylish look that was personalized for me. I also liked that Leslie didn't over-complicate things by trying to sell me particular products or teach me "patented techniques" for my hair. At other salons, this kind of thing made me feel as if curly hair is some kind of overwhelming project that I could only navigate with one particular brand or approach. Leslie still gave me all the information I needed to be able to style my new cut at home, but I liked her more approachable, common-sense attitude. I was also very happy with the service. Leslie was able to schedule me in for the week I called, and encouraged me to email or call her at any point before my appointment with my thoughts or questions. When I arrived, she talked to me about what I was looking for from my cut and looked at some photos I had brought for ideas. She was interested in in hearing exactly what I thought and what I was looking for, but she also gave her own, very helpful, input. She was also clearly invested in me personally, and was talking about how I could continue to give feedback and try new things as our relationship develops if I wanted to keep coming back. This was a welcome change from bigger "curly-expert" salons, where I had always felt so anonymous! The atmosphere in the salon in general was friendly and comfortable, and Dominick, who washed my hair, was also lovely. I had a coupon, but even without it the total price for the cut would have been $125, which is really reasonable for a curly hair stylist as great as Leslie. Will be back for sure!

I came in for a cut with Leslie, and the whole experience was great! I have 3b curls, and it is always nerve-wracking to try a new stylist. I was also going significantly shorter in this appointment, so it was very important that I be in good hands. From the start, it was clear that Leslie knew exactly what she was doing. I have a mixture of multiple hair types including 4a,b and 3c... And she handled them all very well. I went to her for my bc after 13 months of transitioning. She knew what she was doing. She knew how to handle the textures correctly and make sure that everything was nice and even . She checks on you to make sure that you are completely satisfied with your hair even after you leave the salon. She's very caring for her clients and she is very sweet. And she will take your advice , check on what you may point out and explain everything she is doing. I had a wonderful experience there.

Leslie Ellen is a great curly-hair stylist! After embracing my natural biracial 3b/3c curly hair in 2007, I have seen my fair share of curl cutting "experts". Leslie Ellen has saved my style and my sanity! I went through the devachan phase, and ended up with the same cut as every other person who has been to devachan. I went to another 'expert' and ended up with triangle-head. Hair grows back, right? So I stayed with this expert a few years until I decided to try a new color and ended up with terrible, streaky platinum highlights in my dark brown hair. Enter Leslie Ellen in 2012; she was able to get a more natural color and give me a great cut that drew out my curls. It was curly-bob like, but better and my curls responded very well to it. Every time I see her, I end up with a lovely cut with a great shape that differs from other curly girls. The cuts grow out really well, and still look good on the rare occasion that I straighten it. She has a peach of a personality and the salon location is pretty accessible by public transportation. If you want a great curly cut, that grows out well AND looks good straight, Leslie Ellen is your lady!

I have been fortunate to have Leslie Ellen Abbate as my hair stylist for 9 years now! She cuts, styles, and applies color and HiLites! She has done Keratin treatments on my hair also. She is a fabulous hair stylist, who puts her heart and soul into her work! She even calls you after you leave to make sure you are still loving that beauty she turned you into. Great experience and highly recommended!

In a word, Leslie is FANTASTIC!! I've been going to her for a few months now and honestly my hair has never looked better! I have curly hair that never looks the same from one day to the next. I don't know what she did, but once Leslie got a hold of my hair it completely changed! Every day is a good hair day, my hair actually has a consistent look and I understand how to style it and put products in my hair. I have gotten numerous compliments on my hair and they keep coming even 2 months after a cut! I have been to very pricey stylists and salons but none have made me look as good as Leslie. Her expertise for cut as well as color has won me over and I am now a loyal customer. Everytime I see her we discuss how I'm feeling about the cut and color, what options I have and her recommendations. She's not afraid to tell me what she thinks about my color, and her expert option is always appreciated and quite frankly RIGHT! I highly recommend Leslie, she'll convert you after 1 visit!

After following the same hair designer from salon to salon for many years, when he moved yet again, I tried a new person at one of the well-known "curly hair salons," but it just wasn't for me. Not to mention how absurd the prices were. Then, about a month ago, I gave Leslie a try and I couldn't be happier. She knew exactly what was wrong with both the cut and color I had, and she immediately went to work fixing it. While it took me a few days to get used to the new look, I have never been happier with my hair. It is SO much more stylish; SO much easier to take care of; and SO much less frizzy than it was before .Leslie is also "low pressure': there's no pressure to buy any specific products, adding to your bill, as there is at the big curly hair salons. I will definitely be going back to Leslie, and I'd highly recommend her to anyone who wants a fresh take on their hair.

Leslie has been cutting, and coloring, and styling my hair since the beginning of time!(Well since she started doing hair 20 years ago)This woman is amazing! She has beautified me so many times. My hair always looks gorgeous. My haircuts and color are always unique and creative. I must be honest, I have tried others and it only ended with me running back to Leslie to fix me. If I could give her a 100 star rating or more, I would!! GO GET YOUR HAIR DONE WITH LESLIE!! IT IS THE BEST MONEY YOU WILL SPEND ON YOURSELF EVER!!!

I went to Leslie Ellen back in July 2011, was thrilled with the result the day of the cut, am still happy with my hair today, and yet, can't wait to go see her again in October. Not only did Leslie do an amazing job on my pesky, type 3A hair (which she somehow managed to get fabulously straight), but she was such a sweetheart...so easy to talk to and easy to trust. I would absolutely recommend her to any woman who has struggled with her curly hair and is seeking a new curly hair specialist in NYC.

I've been to both Devachan and Ouidad, and Leslie Ellen outdid them both! She took the time to find out what my hair concerns were and to come up with a cut that would suit me and my lifestyle. She really understood what I wanted, and my hair looks wonderful! I highly recommend her!

Leslie has consistently given me the best haircuts ever. I've been going to her for over 2 years. People who haven't seen me in a while constantly tell me what a great haircut I have. Even my daughter loves and I don't often get compliments from her. Leslie has also Keratined my hair, and the first time it lasted for over 6 months. She is generous with her time and aims for perfection. And she really does know how to change your life with a haircut and other treatments. I adore her and recommend her highly. I've been going to Leslie for several years now, and I've never left disappointed. She really knows curly hair, and styles my 3c hair so well, that I always get compliments when I go out afterwards. She's patient and kind, and is really into making the client happy. My hair is definitely lucky to have her.

I have curly type 3b hair and I have to say that Leslie Ellen, who has been my stylist for close to ten years, really knows how to manage and style my hair! I have gone from extremely long, to shoulder-length styles and she has given me the right cut each time. Aside from behind friendly and easy going, Leslie knows everything there is to know about properly styling curly and wavy hair. Whether it's how to cut it, what styling product to use, or styling method to follow in order to maintain healthy, beautiful, naturally curly hair, Leslie is an expert who has more love and passion for what she does than any other stylist I've ever met. If you love your curls and are looking for someone who is going to love them as much as you do, make an appointment to see Leslie!
