Would NOT recommend this stylist to anyone. Colossal waste of $190. I went to her based on her good reviews and I literally cried the entire ride home. She did not listen to what I wanted for my hair, and instead decided herself what would look good. She stripped my hair of the highlights I already had, and insulted the way they had been put in. And the haircut...was terrible. I came in with a long "pyramid" shape and I left with a short one, covered in frizz. When I asked her to fix it up a little bit, she stated it was from damage I had already inflicted upon it. She then went on to recommend styling products from Suave or LA Looks that I could find at WalMart, as I was a mother of 2 toddlers and the Curlisto products she sells "were probably not in my budget." Funnily enough I don't remember discussing the account balance in my checking account for her to make such an astute observation. Her loss, because I am the EASIEST sell when it comes to salon hair products. Lastly - and best - when I emailed her later that night telling her how disappointed I was, she apologized and offered future hair services. I told her I preferred at least a partial refund, and she flat out refused. It wasn't a total waste of 2 hours, though - I got to listen to how she's an aspiring erotic novel author and her extensive advice on which raunchy books I should read. Slightly uncomfortable and way unprofessional. Find another stylist. ANYONE else.
Only went to her once. I told her I needed to keep it long, to weigh my hair down (I have tight curls, fine hair, but lots of it) and keep it from getting "poofy" because I hate poofy. She took off three inches (claiming it was damaged) and I left looking like Shirley temple. I told her I liked soft curls, not scrunchy. I left with stiff straw hair that I had to rewash. The cut is okay, but I have to straighten it now in order to not look like a childish curly bob. And I have a huge hunk of hair that is shorter in the back (she said "soft face framing layers that will make you look like a movie star"... yeah, a 5 yr old movie star from the 1930s and my "face" is not in the back of my head). She talked my ear off and doesn't seem to listen very well. I mentioned the experience to a friend, without mentioning her name, and my friend guessed who she was straight out. Guess she has a reputation for chatter. For $100, I would have expected a more professional experience.
I was in St. Petersburg for business (from Montana) and had Cynthia cut my hair. I have had others cut my hair using the dry cut method and have not been that happy with it. Cynthia evaluated my curl type and recommended a wet cut based on her assessment and training. It was the best haircut I've ever had!! I wish I could go back every time I'm ready for a haircut.....any desire to move to Montana Cynthia? Thanks for a great haircut and for teaching me how to care for my curls!
Four months ago I was traumatized by a new hairdresser who gave me the worst color and cut of my adult life. I was actually afraid to go to another salon, despite the fact that I had 4 months of roots. I saw an article about Cynthia in the newspaper and decided to try. So I drove longer than I had even driven for a hair salon...it was worth the trip. Cynthia gave great tips and walked me through everything that she did. And my hair looks great! I have found a new salon!
Love the cut and the tips i got from Cynthia.. i was visiting Tampa for work and needed a hair cut badly... just googled her and am so happy to have found her.. i really wish you can someday open up another salon in my part of town. thanks for the tips and the lift too :)
She fondly refers to me a client Zero. i was her first curly girl and introduced her to naturallycurly.com She is FAB, up-to-date, and just overall amazing!!!
Cynthia has the education, skills, and experience to rescue and enhance your curly hair needs. She listens to your concerns and works with you. I have been going to her for 8 years. I would go out of my way for her service. I strongly recommend her.
I started going to Cynthia 2 or 3 years ago after a co-worker told me she specializes in cutting and styling curls. After years of frustration from trying to find a stylist that wasn't afraid of cutting my curls, Cynthia has been a Godsend. Seriously. She is confident and experienced, she knows what she's doing, and my hair has never looked better!!! I HIGHLY recommend Cynthia to any girl or woman with hard-to-manage hair, not just curls. She listens to what you are looking for with your hair, and she makes it happen. I love Cynthia. I just can't say it enough!!! Plus, Cynthia is always looking for new product, new skills, and new techniques. She is always learning. A+ Cynthia. Can't wait for my next appointment :)
Fixed my triangle! She has given me the best cut and color job, and was able to recommend me products that worked with my hair.
Cynthia is absolutely amazing! I live in Tampa and drive about a half an hour each way just to have her cut my hair, I wouldn't trust anyone else to do such a great job. I have been seeing her for about 5 years and even if I moved away I would still make a point to come back and see her she is just that good!
she is the best!! both in cut and coloring. every appointment with her is like a "curly hair 101" session.
Cynthia is the best when it comes to curly hair. She understands curl pattern and structure. She consistently strives to improve her skills always keeping up with the latest information. Her salon is beautiful and immaculent. I drive 2 hours each way every seven weeks to see her. She is well worth the drive. She is the best at what she does!
Can you remember the first time you paid a visit to your current stylist? I do and with good reason: I had my first haircut by Cynthia in January 2007, and I remember the date clearly because it truly was a life changing experience! In fact, when January nears I often tease Cynthia that "our anniversary is coming up." As a curly girl born in '71, I grew up watching Charlie's Angles, the Love Boat and then MTV. And, like many girls of my age, I tried my hardest to copy the hairstyles of the TV icons of the day. Sadly, curly hair does not do the "Farah". And, when you factor in the humidity of my Florida home, well... you can imagine the disaster that was my hair. Two words: curly mushroom! As I got older, I learned a few things to help me manage my 'do, but I was certainly not proud of my curly locks. So, since that fateful day in January when I heeded the advice of a friend and paid a visit Cynthia, I have never looked back nor has my hair has ever looked better! Cynthia is my "hairy" godmother! She introduced me to products designed for curls, taught me how to use them, told me to shampoo less (a lot less!), condition more and gave me a hair cut that made me stand straighter, instantly lose 20 lbs , and allowed me to (FINALLY!) feel beautiful and excited about my curls. And, better than a fairy godmother, her magic didn't end at midnight. Cynthia still continues to be my "go-to" stylist and better yet, has become a friend. She now cuts my six-year-old daughter's hair, my three-year-old son's hair, my husband's hair (yes, we are a curly family!) and if anyone should ever ask me who does my hair, I gladly tell them they must see Cynthia. So, here's to you Cynthia - thanks for making everyday a good hair day!
Cynthia knows her curls! She goes out of her way to stay on top of the latest curly trends, training, styles and products. Tell her your hair issues and she'll help you get the best out of your curls. Also, she is amazing at color-- from natural to fun and funky, she can do it all! I personally prefer my natural color minus the gray and Cynthia gets it perfect every time. I love how put together I feel after a visit with Cynthia.
After my experience with a "curl expert" in this area, I was desperate to find someone who really knew how to cut and style curly hair. My research led me to Cynthia at Loft 21 and it has truly been the single most wonderful experience I have ever had with a hair stylist. Aside from the fact that she was very confident in her talents (which helped me feel comfortable) she has been the only person to ever explain that just because you have curly hair doesn't mean you can't have a hair style. My hair has been long (either mid back or longer) since the early 90's. No real style...just long and curly. Due to bad experiences, I was so afraid of letting just anyone touch my hair that I didn’t get a hair cut for over 4 years. I walked out of Cynthia's salon yesterday, with a wonderful short (above shoulder) hairstyle and a new love for my curls. I have been told that I look both, more sophisticated and younger all at the same time. If you, like me, were afraid of how the wrong haircut could damage your hair...just stop in and meet her. You will see what I mean. Side note: My 18 year old daughter loved my hair so much that she is going in to have her hair cut with Cynthia very soon. Thank you so much Cynthia!
I have followed Cynthia to 4 salons. She is that good! She truly understands how my hair works and it always looks fabulous. Plus she is always willing to accomodate whenever I change my mind on what I want and that happens quite often. LOL! The Ouidad carve and slice has done wonders for my hair. I was a little skeptical at first at what it would do (bad memories of thinning shears and razoring) but it has been great. It allowed me to get a really sharp and awesome angle on my bob while eliminating the heaviness and really showcasing my curls. Love it! Cynthia rocks! I recommend her to everyone! :0)
I have been seeing Cynthia for several years. I love the cuts I get as I alternate between leaving it curly and blow drying it straight. She is the first stylist to cut it where the back does not lay funny. I also love the color. Whatever she does, I have highlights, without getting highlights. I think she says she uses my gray hair for the highlights. :) Anyway, it works!
I have been going to Cynthia for years now. I send everyone I know to her even if they don't have curly hair. She is very knowledgeable on all types of hair. I won't trust my hair to anyone else.
I have been going to Cynthia for over 2 years. I like that she understands that one size doesn't fit all when it comes to cutting curly hair. I told her that I thought the top of my hair was laying too flat and I would like to have a cut that would give my crown more lift. She gave me a great layered cut. I now use less product, have great volumen, and still have my length. I couldn't be happier!
Cynthia's managed to do what no one else has done - she tamed my dry, coarse very wavy hair !!! Great color on very color resistant hair, fab cuts and texturizing, and her extensive product knowledge keep my really unruly under control. She's a great conversationalist - lots of interests, worldly and widely read so it's easy to find something fun to talk about. I really appreciate her utmost respect for her clients' time - she's extremely efficient - you're in & out without feeling rushed or underserved. Add to her talent a salon that's friendly, has good parking and is easy to get to and it's the perfect blend for a great hair day !!!
Cynthia's been keeping my very coarse, very thick, very dry wavy hair under control for 5 years - not an easy trick to pull off !! She does great cuts for me, knows how to manage the volume and I love the way she does my color. And ... she's fun to chat with - a well-educated, worldly stylist with widely varied interests.
Won't go to her again. I was not impressed at all with the cut, very uneven. Sells Jessicurls, though, had both scents in stock.
Curl-tastic! Thanks so much for the great cut, I love it. I would recommend Cynthia for all curly girls.
Great with haircuts. She knows curly hair very well. But stay away from color services. I did not appreaciate the shop charging me almost 30% more than what she told me, and ended up with something totally opposite what I asked for. Did not discuss what she was going to do and too much personal chat.
I have been going to Cynthia for 4 1/2 years. She has performed a miracle on my hair and color. I was seeking someone with enough education, time, and experience who knows hair, curls, and color. She is truly a Master in her abilities. Not to mention, she is wealth of information on nutrition, travel, and culture. I learn something interesting every time I see her. In this tough economy, she is bargain for the her quality of service.
I flew to Florida for a quick visit to a friend. (I live in Indiana) I called and got an appt. with no problems. Cynthia was great and really boosted my "curl-esteem". I learned a lot in just that one visit and felt very comfortable with her. The good news is that I am moving to the area and will be able to go back to her and she can help me to realize the great potential my curls have. The cut was great, the color was great and I am looking forward to a long relationship with my new stylist. Don't hesitate girls. She really knows herself and curls. She will not mince words with you and will have you believing that curly hair IS beautiful! Curly in Indiana
I truly think that Cynthia does know curls being a curly girl herself. I absolutely love the new Jessi Curl products that she turned me on to. With that said though I wasn't crazy about the cut or color that she created for me. Too many blunt layers around my face that werent'graduated has given me "ears" and the color turned out a little too orangey which she said would lighten up in the Florida sun eventually. She is a super fun girl to talk to but I'm frustrated about growing out these layers once again!
This was my third visit with cynthia for highlights and there is no doubt in my mind that she is a GENIUS with color. She does 'custom-made highlights' and I swear it has made the biggest difference in my hair. Unlike other stylist who just follow the generic foil highlight procedure, row after row, top to bottom, side to side with no real thought of where they're placing the highlights, Cynthia stratigically places them according to the curl pattern. Trust me, I've been highlighting my hair for 23 years with a very long memory of my results and these are the BEST I've had. At 39, my skin is begining to show my age and cynthia's color brings out the best in my skin tone which has never happened before because the blond color was never quite right for my complexion. She also gave me a FANTASTIC hair cut. I only wanted a trim, no more then 1 inch taken off and she managed to do that while giving me long layers at the same time, my hair is still the same long length but with more body!!!! She is amazing!!!! If you live in florida or even if you don't, jump on a southwest airline, they're cheap, and go see her. Her salon is only 10 minutes from the airport, a straight drive on one highway, exit, 2 turns and you're there.
Though further raves reviews appear completely unnecessary at this point, I am nonetheless compelled to add myself to the long list of Cynthia devotees. She has transformed my hair into beautiful curls which were previously weighed down and hidden. She gives great style tips but works within what you want and feel comfortable with. The cut that she has given me also grows out beautifully which is a blessing to a grad student on a limited budget. Not only do you get a great haircut but Cynthia is a great person to chat with, very open and friendly!
I read the recommendation of several clients for a stylist as I was looking for one who knows, really knows curly hair. So I went and tried Cynthia at Practically Frivolous in St. Pete, FL. I have to drive 45 minutes to get there but was so impressed with her that I brought three other girlfriends with me the next time I went. Thank you so much for helping me find a stylist that not only knows curly hair, but is a great colorist.
The best hair experience I have ever had. Period. Cynthia is an amazing curly hair specialist and the rave reviews posted here are warranted. After the most thorough consultation I have ever had, Cynthia took me from one-length, heavy, dense hair to light, bouncy, and defined botticelli curls. My very natural looking highlights were perfectly placed and the integrity of my hair was preserved. I have never, ever walked out of a salon feeling so beautiful! I will continue to drive the 1.5 hours to St. Pete just for Cynthia's expertise and if you live anywhere in the state of Florida, you might want to consider the drive too. It's well worth it!
I am not one to write reviews of this type, but having just had a cut / color and consultation with Cynthia I feeled compelled to do so. Cynthia really knows her stuff. She took her time talking to me about what I needed to do differently with my hair and seemed to know (even before I said it) what my challenges in getting a stylish look have been. I have been following her recommendations and have had more people compliment me on my hair in the past week than in the last five years. My only regret is not finding Cythia sooner...
The best experience ever! Cynthia is super friendly, professional and definitely knows her curls. I have thick, long, 3B hair and she brought it to life. She explained everything she was doing - even how to make it look great everyday. I am her No. 1 fan!
Cynthia is amazing as always! The new salon is beautiful and easy to find with lots of parking. I love the new Jessicurl products I am a definite convert, I finally have the curly hair I always dreamed of, thanks Cynthia!
Cynthia is awesome. She totally understands curls and their needs. I would recommend her to any curly head I come across! Just a note - she is now at a new salon, for anyone who's looking to contact her: Practically Frivolous in St. Pete, 4140 16th St. North.
I wish I could be as happy as the other gals with Cynthia but I'm not. She is SUPER SWEET but did nothing for my hair.
Cynthia is awesome!!! I have 3C/4A type hair mid-neck length. I wanted a trim and thats what i got- no cutting inches off like every other stylist i've come across. She really is knowledgable about curly hair, we consulted first and she explained what her plan was way before the scissors came out. All she did is sectioned off my curly hair and snipped just the split ends while respecting the curl pattern. I am very happy I listened to the recommendations on this site. I think I've found my stylist!!!!!
What can I say? She is amazing. I have followed her to three salons. She is so incredible she comforts and counsels me when I have a hair emergency-I even have her home number. I have EXTREMELY curly hair that needed to be babied after a bleaching mishap from another hairdresser. I have to honestly say, I have also traveled to NY to see Carlos @ Devachen and Cynthia is just as amazing (love you also, Carlos). She embodies the "Curly Girl" philosophy, understands that shampoo does not touch my strands, and above all, truly cares about me (and my obsession) with my locks. If you are anywhere in the area-heck I fly to see her-I highly recommend a visit to see Cynthia. I am one of her biggest fans and I would be lost without her!
Cynthia, we love you and your great tips. She was able to squeenze in the three of us on a Saturday morning. She knew exactly what our problems were, and she took into consideration the shapes of our faces, and the different types of hair we had. She cut Sandra's hair dry at first, and then again wet an Sandra is not shampooing every day anymore. Raquel and me I were cut wet and had layers put in and she even spanked our hair (she used a razor in the areas that had a little too much weight). We no longer have the Cocker spaniel look! We enjoyed our day with Cynthia!
After reading reviews on Cynthia (Salon n'Nash, Clearwater)I decided to email her. She responded quickly to my emails and I decided to take the 4 hour drive (each way!) to her new location in St. Petersburg to see her. Cynthia cut my hair dry first then followed with 'wet dusting' to even out uneven lengths and trim back split ends. She understands what my goal is for my hair and is willing to work with me to achieve it. After my hair got over the initial 'shock' of being cut, it has settled into some lovely boticelli curls which she says is what I have (I thought so!). Short of flying to NYC to Devachan or Oregon's Dirtly Little Secrets, I think I have found the next closest place to get the care and cut I want...Cynthia, at Studio Christopher James. Well worth my trip!
