After spending a lifetime seeking a stylist who can cut my thick, curly mane without shattering the ends or leaving me with the dreaded triangle head, I have found Luvena. Have had 2 haircuts with her and was thrilled both times. This woman can cut curly hair! She gets it, she has vision, she can see what to do, and she does it effortlessly. And she's cool and fun to talk to. I like her reasonable prices and that her salon is fun but unpretentious. It's all so real there. I plan to return to her and just hope she keeps on cutting in New Haven. She's such an asset to the curly world!
Stacy did awesome job on my natural 4b/4c hair, she was very patient explained everything she was doing from start to finish. She made some great recommendations that I followed. I look forward to going back.
This was my very first time at this salon. I loved it!! I have always had fine hair, and when I was younger my mother had no clue what to do with my hair. I started a press and curl at about 9 and then proceeded to do everything imaginable to my hair. I permed, color, fried, died and laid it to the side, LOL. Seriously, I rarely visited African American salons because they did not seem to manage or cut my hair properly. About two years ago I stopped perming my hair and chose NOT to cut out the perm. Stacy did a wonderful job. I love it! I still have my length and can wear multiple styles. I highly recommend Luvena's!
I brought my super curly daughter to Luvena last weekend. Her hair is FANTASTIC! I plan to go in the summer when I'm due for my own curls to be cut. I would recommend any curly to go to her salon, no matter the distance. Every single patron walked out with fabulous curls.
My first time at this salon was incredible. I went with my sister, who was going curly for the first time while I was going for a cut and had been naturally curly for a year. My stylist made my hair look amazing, better than I'd been able to make it in over a year of trying really hard. Great experience!
Thank God, I have finally found a salon that knows how to cut, care for and style my hair. Stacy was very informative and she was a good listener. I highly recommend this salon to anyone with curly hair. Mine never looked or felt so good! I'm one happy woman.
This was my first visit to a salon since going natural nearly 2 years before. This was my first ever visit to a curly salon also. I must say it was fabulous. I just came in for a trim as I am still trying to grow my hair out of that ackward "mid-length" phase. The atomosphere is super friendly and their prices are reasonable, especially considering the area they are located in). I look forward to revisiting them again for my next trim!
I brought my ten year old mixed race daughter to Luvena after her father cut out a huge portion of hair from the back of her head. Luvena was sensitive and honest. She was excellent teaching my daughter how to care for her hair and was honest with me about the best direction to take with her hair given the situation and taking my daughters age and self-esteem into consideration. Luvena made a stressful situation manageable and my daughter walked away happy and confident.
This was my first time visiting the salon and I was made to feel at home and welcomed immediately!!! I came in for a "big chop" after growing out my relaxer for only a few months!! She took a look at my hair and told me quite honestly that it would be a "low curly afro". I decided to get right to it and start cutting although they did offer me the option to think about it a little longer. I proceeded with the cut and she immediately put me at ease by chatting with me while she cut. When she washed my hair she explained everything that she was doing and the products that she was using. She didn't try to sell me what she was using and even suggested that I experiment and see what brands worked best for me. She styled it and put me under the dryer and gave me some material to read about curly hair which was very helpful!!! I was very pleased with the cut when she was done. She had just cut at least 12 inches and I didn't even miss it, that's how much I loved my new style!! I will definitely return!!
It has been a long time since I have found someone who can cut my hair to my liking. In the past every time I found someone they seemed to move away or something. I just loved how Jill cut and styled my hair. I live on Long Island so I have to travel to get there but I feel it is worth it. They definitely have me as a customer for life.
I like this woman Luvena, she seems to go to her own beat and her style of cutting was like none I have ever seen. I loved my curls after I left and felt each one was cared for! I will definitely be going back!
I received many complements after my visit to Luvena Leslie. I have various textures of hair from 3b-4a so I was really psyched to have Luvena do my hair. They used Deva Curl which made my curls pop. She colored my hair which is 75% gray and I really like the way it turned out. My next appt will be to have a haircut and styling lesson. Can't wait. I agree with someone else's comment that their results were hard for me to reproduce.
The Luvena Leslie salon is the best. I have traveled all over the place to get my hair done (NYC, DC) and I was extremely over joyed with the service I received. I arrived to my appointment on-time and I was sat in the chair to have my hair trimmed and then I get a color rinse and style. I am in and out in 2 hours which is a miracle when you compare going to a braiding salon or other hair salons. My hair is a 4a so I find that my hair does better with the Kinky Curly hair line products I have tried the Mixed Chicks line at the salon. When Luvena does my hair it looks good but I can’t get it to look the same at home. I have found a new hairstylist that I will travel for if I move from the state.
I took my curly haired daughter to Luvena because my older straight haired daughter goes to school right down the street and the idea of a salon that deals with curly hair intrigued me. She was very nice and talkative, my daughters hair looked so nice and each curl was seperate and bouncy. I wish I had asked what she did so I could reproduce the look at home. But after a horrible haircut a year ago at the mall salon, this haircut was straight from heaven. Going to make her next appt right now!
I scheduled an appointment for my daughter who is African American and Hispanic with extremely tight curly hair. She is growing out some previously damaged hair from a wash and set from a Dominican salon. I brought her with her hair parted and sectioned because I thought it would be easier to comb through. Luvena informed me that what was going to be an appointment was now a consultation because she cuts hair in its natural state, (hair out), I completely understand that, but the receptionist who I spoke to and knew I was a new client should have informed me. I told her that I knew a significant amount of hair would have to be cut to remove the damaged hair but that I was hoping to possibly do it in phases so that the cut wouldn't be so drastic because both my daughter and I were worried about the length. She basically said that in order for her to work with her hair most of it would have to come off and told me of a client who had a similar experience and she gave her a buzz cut. That definitely was not going to happen with my daughter. She said to me a couple of times that maybe she isn't the person who should do her hair, why wouldn't she, isn't she suppose to be a curly hair specialist? I explained to her that I was looking to strengthen her hair, not use heat and find alternatives ways to style her hair. Again she mentioned she probably isn't the person who should be doing her hair. I know she wasn't interested in having me back because she didn't actually ask me to schedule another appointment at the front desk; I could call if I wanted too. Not to mention my appointment was for 11:30 and during that time she finished one client, cut another ones hair and put her under dryer. A good hairdresser would help nurture one's hair back to a good state while taking the clients concern's into consideration, no matter how long it would take. She didn't even suggest products or any type of advice. I refuse to chop my daughters’ hair so she can have a clean slate. I feel like Luvena took one look at us and decided she wasn't going to work with her hair. I thought her delivery of information was tacky and felt like she shunned me. She might work with all "curly" hair types, but it's evident from the pictures of her work on her website that there is one common denominator and clearly she has a preference.
Best haircut and color I've ever gotten. Super easy and friendly atmosphere, while also totally professional. I'm happy to be a new loyal member of the Luvena Leslie Salon family!
When I first when to Luvena, my hair was a mess. I had lots of split ends and my curls were dry and dull. Then I went to her salon and she knew exactly what to do. After she cut my hair, it was light and my curls were beautiful and glossy. It's a month later and though my hair grew, the shape and style have stayed and it's still great. I definitely recommend her!
My hair looks GREAT - EVERY DAY! Interesting technique, great products. Never going back to "traditional" salon. Yay for curlyques!
I dealt with bad hair cuts for years (too short in front, not short enough in back, too much off the top not enough off the bottom...) but now that I found Luvena I know I will never have to worry about a bad haircut again. You can immediately tell that she knows how to cut curly hair. She is the first hair dresser ever who hasn't soaked my hair with a water spray or washed it before cutting, which is SUCH a relief! She explains exactly what she's doing and showed me how to do my hair at home. I had a lot of questions and she was happy to answer all of them. I am due for another haircut in a couple weeks and I can't wait to go back.
Luvena is FANTASTIC. Before her, I had never gotten a good haircut--stylists always cut my curls too short, and they ended up frizzy and out of control. Luvena cut my hair dry, and by the end of my appointment, my hair was soft, with beautifully defined curls. She listens to what you want and she's super creative . She'll also show you exactly what she did so you can replicate it at home. After going to her, people have come up to me on the street to ask where I got my hair cut. Definitely go to this salon!
My first experience at this salon was a pleasant one. Tabitha cut my hair. I wasn't sure how it was going to come out because all my previous stylists washed my hair before cutting it. They would cut it wet. Not here. For curly hair, they cut it first when it is dry. To my surprise, it was cut beautifully. Tabitha is professional and knowledgeable when it comes to hair. She did a great job and she is super sweet to talk to. I had Tabitha straighten my curls because I can't do it myself. So, it was a treat to have it starightened and she did an awesome job doing that. After leaving it staright for several days, I finally washed it and my curls were back! They were healthy and nicely shaped. Luvena colred my hair and it was one of the best colors I ever got. It matched my natural color very nicely. I will go back there agian.
Luvena cut my hair at Even Ends in West Hartford a few weeks ago. I love her and the WAY she cuts hair. I think a 2nd and 3rd haircut will perfect the style but otherwise my hair looks healthy and bouncy again!! Thank You Luvena
Love, love, love my new hair cut! Luvena gave me the cut I've been asking for since I first discovered the Deva cutting technique. Bigger is better for me. Love lots of volume on top with springy, little curls that fall across my forehead. Luvena totally got what I was saying. My 3b curls responded just right to the cut - lots of volume but lots of definition too. Three weeks later I can say I'm loving this cut more and more. A sign of a good cut is that you don't need a ton of product and you don't have to touch it a lot to get it to look the way you want. I also had the opportunity to try Curling Custard and Knot Today conditioner by Kinky-Curly, a curly hair product line that doesn't contain any toxins, super important for me as I just spent a ton removing all the bad stuff from my body. It has just the right amount of hold for my curl type w/o getting crunchy or flakey. Looking forward to my next cut... though it might be a few months b/c the cut is so good!
I first found at the other salon where she used to work. I live in Boston, but my best friend goes to Yale and reccommended this place. She does a better job of cutting than anyone I've found in Boston. So I travel to CT every few months for my trim. her cuts are awesome and the salon is clean. The staff is nice, and I always get compliments on my hair when I leave her salon. I definitely recommend her!
Got a haircut a few months ago...Told Luvena I trusted her completely and to go crazy with fun layers and dimensions...when I left the salon, I LOVE it but a few days later it hit me how short it was. I usually wear my hair long so I was nervous and anxious for a couple of weeks. The layers were amazing and the hair was healthy, just not sure if the length was right for my face shape. A few weeks later and the layers have stayed in tact and I absolutely LOVE the look!!! She cut it in a way that even grown out it looks amazing. I've gotten compliments from both close friends and strangers since the haircut- even at its different lengths. Can't wait to get a similar cut...just have to be patient for the first few weeks while the hair grows into itself. Excited for another appointment soon!!!
I had really long unkempt hair after not having a hair cut in more than 4 years. (The reason for no previous haircuts was a combination of lack of funds and distrust of most stylists.) She cut off about 9 inches in total and gave me a really cute haircut! I've gotten tons of compliments on it and it's so easy to care for. Even when I don't use any product, there is minimal frizz. I was in a tropical climate for about a month since the haircut and even there I didn't need to use any product for an every-day style. YAY! I'll definitely be going back soon!
For several years I have been a devotee of Luvena's and traveled to New Haven for my cut & color. Now, one day a week, she's wielding her scissors in West Hartford. YEA!!! Lots of curly girls up here will be thrilled as she "gets it" and never have I left feeling anything less than beautiful. From the kinkiest hair to just wavy, Luvena knows how to maximize the curl and teach you to take care of your mane at home. Well worth the trip to New Haven, even better that she's close by now!
Luvena is not only talented but also a sweet, gregarious person who is fantastic to visit. The salon itself is really great. The chairs at the sinks are extremely comfortable (not true of all salons in New Haven) and the rest of the staff is cheerful. Can't recommend the place highly enough!
We all know how hard it can be to find a stylist who knows how to deal with curly hair. But New Haven has Luvena - consider your search over! Luvena has given me consistently fantastic cuts, hands down the very best. She enjoys her craft, sends a groovy vibe, and will add sparkle to your day! Go make an appointment!
what can i say about Luvena? nothing less that she is a star of curly hair, I was in denial about my curly hair and because I burned it with my flat-iron, and seeing the best curls on the head of my sister after a cut that Luvena gave her, she have returned the magic of my hair and now better, more natural, 100% Latina, let me tell you my hair was below the shoulder (length-wise) "straight" but did not serve at all, because of my own hands and my flat-iron, now I have short curly hair (which was saved miraculously by Luvena) and complements do not stop coming, everyone says how good I look with my hair curly, and i really I like it, Luvena is an artist, I give her 5 scissors just because there is no more, but she deserves them all thanks for giving me naturalness and give me a beautiful hair, great job CURLY HAIR IS NOT A TREND IS A LIFE STYLE
Luvena is the best!!! She knows exactly what kind of cut I am looking for, and does just that. No more, no less. She is extremely knowledgeable of curly hair as well and is always giving tips as to the care and styling of your hair. Will never go anywhere else. thanks Luvena. Signa
I first went to Luvena when she was working at her old salon after reading her amazing reviews on this site. When I found out that she had opened her own shop, I followed her because she had given me such an amazing cut, and it wasn't too expensive. Luvena really listened to my ideas about my hair, and as a fellow afro-textured curlie, she even gave me advice about caring for my hair. I've definitely found my New Haven stylist!

I just signed up in this naturallycurly.com like yesterday for the first time. After an exhaustive search for a good stylist, and thanks to so many good reviews about Luvena in this site, I decided to take the chance. Today was the first time that Luvena was cutting hair in West hartford, where I live so I though: what are the chances that she will have an opening, right? but I called her, and her super awesome sister got me in same day!!!! My hair type is kind of a mix between 3b-3c, different pattern in random places :( for this, I think is such a challenge to find someone that can actually give me a haircut, that can make sense to my hair. All I can say, is that without going broke, Luvena did such a divine job with my hair, reshaped it without losing much length, it was a true masterpiece by the time she was done, I'm not joking she is an artist!! and I just fell in love all over again with my curly hair, THANK YOU LUVENA, SEE YOU IN 8-12 WEEKS!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
The mark of a great stylist is being a good listener, and Luvena listened and knew exactly what I needed. Then she did it. She knows what she's doing, which is a huge relief for a curly head in need of understanding and know-how. I am happy to have found this salon and will not only return, but recommend highly to other curly Q's. :)
After hoping to get an appointment with Luvena at her old salon and finding out she wasn't there, I was thrilled when I found out she opened up her own salon. First off, it is located on the most charming little street in New Haven. When I walked in, Luvena and her sister were so friendly and easy to talk to. This was the first cut in a very long time that I really loved. She explained how to style and the price was so reasonable. I will definitely be back, along with my curly-haired son.
Normally I would not write a review however I had to say my peace. I went to this salon based on the reveiws on this board. A review mentioned that she does ALL types of hair. I recommend that before someone says this they check with the stylist first before posting. First I called and made an appointment explained what I wanted --wash deep condition, straight then cut to shape my hair. I specfically asked the receptionist if Luvena has worked with afro natual hair or african american hair (i.e. 4b/c) She asked me if I had curls? (really? )Anyway I told her yes and explained that my curls were very very tightly coiled. However when went you see the definition. Because I observe the Sabbath which means from sunset friday to sunset saturday I do not do anything (tthink Jewish). Anyway come to find out my schedule didnt match hers and it didn't work out. No problem thanked her and hung up. Well I get a call the next day saying that luvena was willing to do my hair after sunset saturday---SOOOO excited! It is nice that she sends an email to confirm the appointment with her address because again this was my first time and I live about 40 min away, had to pull out the GPS. Saturday comes and I can wait to get to the salon. I get there about 5 min late because Parking is not the best in that area. I only wait about 10 min since she had a client anyway. So she sits me in a chair and starts finger my twist (mind you Iknow I had to take them out) She give me this look and says I'm not sure I can straighten you hair? Errrrrr excuse me. She says that her flat iron will not get hot enough to make it straight, unless she uses a lot of heat. I'm like um my hair has been straight before and did not require a lot of heat. She says that its not going to work. I look at her like ummm yea. I just drove 40 min to get here. So I ask what can you do. She says she can wash it deep condition and sit me under the dryer. Then she says have you tried the Dominicans???? Um they use way too much heat. I said thank you and marched right out there....doing research to find a salon--15 minuets $0, talking on the phone with a receptionist during my lunch hour ---15 min $0 , driving 40 minuets paying the meter just to walk in and walk out---NEVER AGAIN!
I love the way Luvena showed me to care for my hair! I get so many compliments on how great it looks, and I am actually enjoying wearing it curly for the first time! I am in the beauty industry and must look good at all times, with Luvena coaching my curls I do!!
I love my haircut by Luvena, I went to her for the 1st time last month and she cut much heat damage out of my hair, I was frustrated with my curls before this cut, and now I am once again in love with my curls and have sworn off my flat iron. Can't wait to go back in January.
Luvena did a fantastic job with my hair. I am currently transitioning from relaxed hair. She took the time to find out what direction I want to go on my natural journey, and gave me sound, honest advice. She made a great first impression, and I look forward to my next visit :)
I LOVE LUVENA! Okay so she used to work for Jo Bruno, so i WAS going to go there, but then she opened her own salon, so yeah i'm going there! I went and thank god i did! Luvena is absolutely the NICEST person. she really knows about hair, and my hair has never looked better. I will (most definetly) be coming back. Taylor(3C)
I am a repeat reviewer, and for a good reason! I started seeing Luvena a little over a year ago, and was hooked right then and there... Lets be honest, curly hair just isn't the same, so why should your hair dresser be? When I learned that Luvena opened her own place recently, I was beyond thrilled. I just had my first appointment at Luvena Leslie Salon on Saturday, and as usually, walked out with a little extra bounce in my step (and my hair too!). Luvena is attentive and friendly, and each appointment feels like catching up with an old friend. The atmosphere at the salon is modern-hip, and her staff was warm and welcoming from the minute I walked in. My only complaint? That my hair grows so slowly that I have to wait 12 weeks to come back!
Luvena has been cutting my hair for 3 plus years and I am a devoted follower of hers. When I found out she opened her own salon I cheered. Anyone who has curly hair ... well lets be honest anyone with hair should get it cut by Luvena!!
I have been a client of Luvena Leslie for a long time & intend to stay with her for life! Her hands have been touched by God. She's an amazing stylist and colorist! But the best part of Luvena is her soul!!! She is truly an angel sent from Heaven above -- the truest spirit I will ever know!
I just recently went for a haircut with Luvena and it was the best haircut I ever had! I have searched for years for a hair dresser that can cut thick curly hair and finally found it. I also love the new salon. Everyone with curly hair should go , they will feel pampered.
I have had so many awful haircuts I have absolutely lost count! Then I found Luvena (when she worked for another salon) and she gave me the best cut I have ever had. She has curly cut and styled my hair twice since and I have left delighted and loving my hair on both occasions. Now that she has her own fabulous salon, I simply wouldn't let anyone else cut/style my hair!! Luvena is a woman of substance, style and integrity. She is also fun and full of the joy of the Lord - always smiling and happy! She takes her role as stylist and educator seriously and will show you how to manage your hair at home without any pressure to purchase products. That said, Luvena introduced me to the Kinky Curly line and I am thrilled to report that I love these all natural organic products -- didn't know there was such a thing -- Thank you Luvena!!
How much do I LOVE Luvena? This is the third time she has done my hair and the first time she has straightened it. Since I went natural, I've been looking for a salon who can straighten my hair every 6 or so months AND do my hair curly. WELL, of course Miss Luvena Leslie came along and ever since she opened her salon, I have been so happy! When you're with Luvena, you know you are in good hands. She is so fun to talk to, she knows what she's doing, and she is all about business and making you look good! She is a hair EXPERT, every straight and curly gurly needs to book an appointment. She is the best out there, I promise. OH, and as for my hair... ;) It looks absolutely fabulous, even still! My hair has never looked this good straight, I love it! :)
I just returned from my visit to Luvena's salon. She fills the space with her energy and spirit, and her cuts and color work are superior. She really understands the needs of curly girls of all stripes! From the kinkiest curls to the softer wavy variety, she is able to style the hair to suit the needs and lifestyle of the client. And she won't do something she thinks is really wrong for you! By heeding her counsel, I've missed making some grievous hairstyle errors. If you want a great curly cut, see Luvena. She rocks!
I have had my hair done by a personal family friend who is a hair dresser and by the world famous Oidad salon, but this is honestly the best cut i've had. When I first had it done at Oidad, they made it seem so difficult to do on my own at home. They put a lot of different products in my hair and i went home with close to $200 hundred dollars worth of them. At this salon, not only did I get the cut i wanted, but when I watched Luvena do my hair, I knew that I could do it just like that at home. I even bought the shampoo and conditioner she used because it seemed to work, and it works for me very well here at home. Cut and products, a whole lot less expensive than Oidad, and a whole lot better.
Definitely loved everything about Luvena and my hair. As she says, "The bigger, the better!" when it comes to hair. My hair was so big and so FABULOUS! I don't know how many pictures I took of it, haha. But she was great to talk to, unlike anyone who has ever done my hair. And I love the leave-in she put in, I had to buy some! My hair looked wonderful, definitely worth the wait. :)
I just had my first appointment with Luvena. She is so awesome! I had 2 cuts previously from different stylists (one was a stylist that I had been with for 10+ years when I was relaxed and the other came highly recommended). I was not happy with either (and I'm a person that's pretty easy to please). My cut now looks great. Luvena is so pleasant. I'm sure I'll be back
Luvena was so great! I loved Jo Bruno hair salon. I have had LONG hair my entire life...i have never gotten more than 2-3 inches cut at one (and thats only once a year, and my cousin a great hairdresser) but it never fails that I leave upset or crying! I wanted something different thats why I went to Jo Bruno. Lueva was so patient with my neurosis and kept me calm. She was also quick- which is never the case because I have so much long curly hair! She cut off 6 inches and it has never looked so good. I have not even thought once about crying! She showed me how to style is correctly so that my curls look their best. She helped me pick out products and was extremely friendly- i think we talked the whole time! I had really nice hair- i honestly never thought it could look better ...but she did an amazing job I will never go anywhere else!
I have been to this salon three times. The first was great, being my first experience and have the deva trim.. dry cut. The second was okay, I felt she was pushing about getting layers and adding color, highlights saying my hair was ashy looking. Well, I do agree on the ashy brown , yes, though, I expressed how I love long curly hair and that it works well for me. So, I brushed it off considering it was the second time I had her work on my hair. Third time, I had a deva cut/ trim and I said I would take her advice and do some LONG layers and again said how much I love my hair long and she kept saying you're hair is so long wow,.. blah blah. Well, she gave me layers alright ... My hair turned out like a pyramid. Yes, the dreaded pyramid look. I am very unhappy and now I have to wait for it to grow. I can't wear it out since every technique of stretching it doesn't work. I think she wants ladies to have short hair like her. I told a co worker about this and she said the same thing, apparently she has told her the same thing she told me. Her hair? Is jet black and has really nice curls. Lesson learned... Do no trust, Never again will this happen ... lesson learned.. unfortunately my hair was the one that suffered and what hurts I can't rock my curls as I wanted too.. So, consider yourself warned. Question everything and do not trust..
After the worst, most traumatic cut of my life, my hair had a miraculous transformation at the hands of Luvena at Jo Bruno. I walked in with my nightmare-ish, 70's gone bad hair and was instantly reassured that I could be fixed! Not only did I get a great fix, I felt comfortable and there was zero pressure to buy any products (even thought the Deva products are worth it if you can affors it). I am eternally thankful and can't wait to go back. I highly suggest this salon to all.
Where do I begin when sharing my experience at Jo Bruno Hair Salon? From the friendly receptionist, to the relaxing environment and setting in the salon to Luvena making my hair transform from a Treasure Troll to looking like Goldy Kinky locks, I can definitely say that this was the BEST salon I've ever been to. Many salons turn me away because they see my hair and say they can't do anything with it or try to charge me extra-Ouch! Jo Bruno took me in for a consultation. Luvena taught me about the different products I could use, talked about how I could cut my hair and talked me out of straightening my hair. (Thank god). She gave me tips about making sure I have enough moisturizer in my hair because I died my hair blond and made me feel really good about my kinky curls. That whole day I couldn't do anything but brag about my pleasant experience at this salon. I'm already looking forward to my next appointment! Thanks Jo Bruno Hair!!!
Luvena gave me an awesome cut! I haven't had a haircut in a long time so I was afraid that I would lose a lot of length, but she was able to keep it long and still give me tons of shape. The styling methods they showed me work wonders and I'm seeing even more curl than I knew I had. I will definitely go back for my next cut :)
I have only been to a hair salon 2 times in my life due to a traumatic experience as a kid (they cut my hair crooked). As I began my search for a local salon that specializes in the Deva hair technique I came upon Jo Bruno. There is no haircut like a Devachan haircut for us curly haired people! Once you try it you will not want a regular one again. Each curl was cut separately and it only took about 30 min! I checked out jobrunohair.com and was able to see the after photos of the clients. I fell in love with Luvena's creations. My hair is thin, but very curly and she knew exactly what to do with it. The atmosphere of the salon is very laid back. The aroma is amazing! No burnt hair smell at all! The colors and decor will pull you in. Luvena made me feel so comforable! She is such a people person. She kept the conversation going and the nerves melted away. I was able to trust her with my hair, which is VERY VERY hard for me to do! She kept the length that I asked for and gave my hair it's shape back. I bought the deva diffuser that I have been wanting to buy at 20% less than online! I will definitely be going back to the salon! To check out my hair go to my twitter page @myloveisamazing. :-) I'm also on the website now. Keep in mind different products and styling techniques make the difference between that photo and how I wear my hair on a daily basis, like on twitter. She used the dryer you sit under, while I use a diffuser! Either way I love the shape Luvena gave me! ~Jackie~
I have always had trouble finding a stylist. It took one stylist over two hours to try to straighten my hair. I even had one guy get a round brush stuck in my hair! Unfortunately, I didn't even know what a "curly" cut was until I went to naturallycurly.com. I found Jo Bruno Hair on there, and picked Luvena from her client photos on their website. She was very friendly and talkative, which I love because getting a haircut is very boring without chatting. I gave her no directions as to how I wanted my hair cut, except that I needed it to be long enough for me to put in a ponytail (I run). She cut about three inches off of my hair and it is the best haircut I have ever had! I posted my new look to Facebook and got TONS of compliments. The best part was that she could tell what style would look great on me. I am also now a huge fan of the DevaCurl products. I had no idea what a difference a shampoo could make! I walked out of the salon feeling like a new person. Thanks Luvena!
I was very excited to hear about your salon through a friend of a friend. I wait forever to get my haircut because no one seems to be able to cut curly hair. I always hated leaving the salon. Unfortunately most places don't realize how to cut curly hair, so I would leave the with my hair wet and still paying the same amount as if they styled it for me too. So going to the hair salon for me was torture. My appointment was with Luvena. What an amazing person. Full of life and energy. i felt rejuvinated after being with her. She gave me a great hair cut and I left your salon feeling awesome. Because I had waited so long to get a haircut (over a year) it needed to be cut shorter than I like. But everyone gave so many compliments and loved the length. I can not wait to go back!!! I also thought your salon was beautiful. Great atmosphere. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming.
Luvena Leslie saved my hair's life. Before meeting Luvena, I was adrift in a sea of bad hair cuts and bad information about my naturally curly hair. By a stroke of good luck, I came across Jo Bruno's salon. When I made my first appointment, the receptionist recommended I see Luvena, who has tons of experience dealing with some of the most challenging curly hair. Luvena was exceedingly helpful and honest in her advice about my hair. Not only did she give me an awesome cut, but she also taught me a care routine that fits my on-the-go personality and busy graduate school life. To top it all off, Luvena is super nice, friendly, and genuinely cares about her clients. Although I moved from New Haven to Boston, I still make the 2 hour trip every couple of months to see my favorite stylist. She is well worth the drive.
I'm a 2b. I've gone to Luvena twice now for Deva cuts. I'd never had my hair cut dry before, and I almost never get a cut I'm happy with from a stylist (probably because they don't know how to cut way hair). Luvena knew I was nervous, and was very calm, friendly, and considerate of my anxiety. She made me feel very comfortable and explained everything she was doing .Both times my hair looked great when she styled it, but after the first cut I had some trouble replicating what she did. At my second appointment she showed me how to scrunch in gel (do a section of hair at a time, while sopping wet) and taught me how to clip properly- now I get much more consistent results (as consistent as you can get with wavy hair). Each time I come she greets me with a smile and leaves me with a hug. I've gotten several compliments on my hair since I've been going to Luvena, and I haven't touched the curling iron or flat iron since my first appointment with her 3 months ago! I've already turned a co-worker onto Luvena!
Luvena did a wonderful job with my curly cut and highlight in September. I loved how it came out so much that I immediately took pictures of myself and sent them to my husband! I also liked how they explained how to style my hair so I can re-create it at home. It was definitely worth the drive from central CT and I'm looking forward to my next appointment!
Luvena has an natural feel for curly hair and a personality that makes you want to hang around after you're done. She is able to bring out the best in your curl, be it long or short.
I had a wonderful experience at Jo Bruno Hair! Their website is extremely informative. Choosing a stylist and making an appointment is easy - the site has detailed biographies and descriptions of what each stylist specializes in, as well as their qualifications and experience. You can set up request a stylist/date/time online and even opt for a text message reminder. With the online system you receive an email confirmation for your appointment, which I thought was very convenient, since I do everything online! This was my first trip to Jo Bruno and I was nervous but Luvena did a great job - she was able to create exactly what I had visualized. She asked me what I had in mind, listened to what I wanted and was able to bring that to life. She is very friendly and talented. I absolutely love my new cut/style and will definitely go back next time I need a trim. She had great tips for me (for example, how to deal with dry hair in the winter) and all-around did a fabulous job. I am very happy with the results! The salon itself is clean and has a great atmosphere. If you are nearby, I definitely recommend checking it out. I drove up from Norwalk and will absolutely go back to Luvena to get my hair cut in the future.
I had an exceptionally great customer experience here at Jo Bruno Hair! I made my appointment online with relative ease and it was confirmed immediately. I am always nervous when first going to a new hair salon, especially since I have hair that never seems cooperate with any haircut but safe to say not at Jo Bruno. I walked in the door and was immediately greeted by Luvena, who has a lovely personality and exceptional hair to match! She asked me about my concerns, which was nice to have a hairdresser ask. I told her I hated my curls and never had a haircut that seemed to either flatter or work with them, but that has all changed now. Luvena cut my hair dry, showed me the proper technique for washing (and not sounding like an infomercial for another hair care product) and then placed me under the dryer. The best part they offered an assortment of teas, water, coffee or wine! After my hair was dry, I was amazed to see my curls staring back at me in the mirror. They looked healthy and happy and so was I! I would definitely recommend Jo Bruno to anyone new to the New Haven area and Luvena!
I had a great experience at this salon. In the past, I had been going to a salon in Fairfield, CT, which also rated very highly on this site. I decided to switch to Jo Bruno when I had one of those "why-the-heck-am-I-spending-over-$100-on-a-haircut-when-I-am-a-broke-student" moments (just for the record, I paid less than half of that when I went to Jo Bruno). Luvena was amazing. I went in, told her the basic idea of what I had in mind, and let her take it from there. This was the first time I had ever had my hair cut dry, and I really liked it. She listened to everything I had to say, and made sure I was leaving the salon with exactly what I wanted. It was such a stress-free experience, I couldn't ask for more. Also, I really liked this salon's approach to "curl care." Although I had had good curly cuts in the past, I was always annoyed by the amount of follow-up the stylists seemed to prescribe. There were always a million things I had to use and do to keep my curls looking good. As a student with a limited amount of time in the morning, and a limited budget to work with, I could never, ever, manage to follow the complicated care routines I was told were necessary. Not so with Jo Bruno. Luvena gave me simple, easy, inexpensive instructions as to how to take care of my curls that seemed incredibly logical--a lot of them were really just steps I had figured out myself over the years. Several weeks after my cut, I can say that I have managed to follow her instructions with incredible easy, and I know my curls have never looked or felt better. The fact that I was given such straightforward, manageable, instructions as to what I was supposed to do after I left the salon was really refreshing, and I definitely plan to go back!
Solid hair cut. I've had 3 good haircuts in my 32 years on this planet. Luvena provided one of them. I left the salon taller, better looking, slimmer and making more money. Enjoyed the banter. Nice clean facility (swept up hair 3 times while I was in the chair). Friendly checkin / checkout. See you in a few weeks.
I was TERRIFIED going in. It's actually been ten years since I went to a hair salon, I've just had friends trim off my dead ends once or twice a year and that was it. I was used to cuts for straight hair where they would blowdry me out and once I went home and shampoo-ed the cut would never look the same again. Luvena was very understanding of my attachment to my long hair, and managed to give me beautiful shape and layers without losing more than a couple inches. She also taught me how to treat my curls so they have definition and less frizz, and more than a week after the cut it's still looking amazing everyday. I couldn't be happier!
I've been to Luvena twice, with a year break in between. She does a fantastic job. The first time I wanted to maintain length but shape my cut, and that's what she did. This last time I wanted it shorter and shaped, and it looks great. The prices are reasonable as well ($45 for my cut with Luvena). Plus, no one pushes you to buy products which makes me happy because I'm all set with the products I already use.
I had my first "curly cut" last week and could not be happier. I drove to New Haven from the Hartford area just for this salon! Luvena was very attentive and understanding of my needs for a professional style that embraced my curls. She really took the time to get to know me and my hair and I was grinning my entire way home! I have been using the recommended products since and my hair looks and feels fabulous. Unlike other salons I have been to, I was not pushed to purchase anything at all!
Since I was 16 I've been going to the same hair stylist to get my hair washed and set. I recently decided that I just wanted to be all natural and I knew my hair stylist wouldn't understand. My younger sister and three of my friends go to Luvena. So, I decided that now was the time to go to her. I absolutely love my hair cut. I had her cut all of my relaxer out and she cut my hair in to a beautiful style. I plan to keep going back to her. The salon has a great atmosphere and I've never seen anyone leave with a bad hair cut. I recommend this salon and Luvena in a heartbeat.
She CHANGED my hair, best haircut I've ever had. I will never leave her! And I hope she never moves from New Haven. I had my hair cut at another salon specializing in curly hair, and was not impressed at all. But at Jo Bruno it was a different experience and from what I've seen, all the ladies in there can cut hair, curly OR straight.
So I went to this salon based on reviews from NC.com even though I usually like to visit before hand. Luvena reshaped my hair without cutting too much off which is what I asked for. The expeience was pleasant, the staff was friendly, it ddn't cost me an arm and a leg and I was out in a little over an hour, including the shampoo. For me that is wild, I have a full, very thick head of hair. I will definitely go back.
Hands down the best haircut I have ever received! Luvena asked me what I wanted and made suggestions. The DevaCurl product demonstration was so helpful as well! The product is wonderful and the cut is even better. My curls have never looked this healthy, touchable, and full of bounce. I have heavy hair so I usually get the crunchy look in an attempt to have all day hold. I also have all day humidity control now! I LOVE this cut and the DevaCurl products!
I had a great experience at this salon! I usually go to New york city for haircuts, however, after reading the reviews for this salon right here in CT, I had to try it out. The cut was only $40 (compared to the usual $150 I pay), the salon was a beautiful loft space in new haven, and the staff was friendly. Luvena cut my hair dry so she could accurately cut into the "s" pattern. She also showed me the correct technique to use Deva products and gave me the Deva curl book to read under the dryer. I left with well defined & bouncy curls. I highly recommend this salon!
