My hairstylist Dana for over 20years(yes that ages me i know). Has Moved to Hair Connection 1768 Mass Ave Cambridge as of Jan 1 st. 617-354-9133. Suffice to say I would travel over land and sea and have to let Dana the most talented respectful attuned and expert hair stylist i have met cut my unruly chestnut mane. And he cuts my whole family's hair. P.s. You will not be disappointed by his huge heart and hilarious personailty.

I'm a longtime client of Dana. He really knows curly hair! He is leaving M Salon and starting at the Hair Connection in Porter Sq starting in January 2013. If you're looking for a great affordable curly haircut in Boston, you can set up an appointment with him there. The phone is 617 354 9133.

I have thick, bushy black curly hair (think early Andie MacDowell) and it has always been tricky to find stylists who can work with it. I started going to Dana over 5 years ago after reading some positive online reviews, and I've been so happy with the results that I've continued to go back ever since. He has given me a variety of cuts ranging from "long enough to put it up" to more bobbed styles, and they've all worked out well. The cuts give a nice shape to my hair, and they also grow out well (I tend to procrastinate about making hair appts, so I've put this to the test). I hear that M Salon will be closing down business, and Dana is moving down the street to Hair Connection on Mass Ave in January 2013 - I will definitely be following him there!

Bad news and Good............... After using Dana Kaplan at M salon on Mass Ave in Cambridge for 10 years, the salon is closing. This totally freaked me out as he is the ONLY person I will let touch my hair ever. He's beyond amazing and knows everyone of my curls by name LOL!! The GOOD news is he is going to be cutting hair only 1 block away at The Hair Connection at 1768 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. So, without skipping a beat, I will continue to be able to get great cuts in the same neighborhood by the same wonderful Dana. I'm sure everyone of his loyal clientele is breathing a collective sigh of relief.

I've been seeing Dana for probably a decade now? I found him by accident, and have been thrilled ever since. I've had the range from a short boy cut to my current long style, and he's always given me a great cut that grows out beautifully. I just found out that he's moving shop, though! As of Jan 3 he'll be at Hair Connection, just in time for me to be due for my next cut.

I have been seeing Dana for over a year now. I have never been loyal to a stylist until I met him. I've only gotten my hair done once from someone else since we met but it was because I was out of the area for a few months. Dana always takes the extra time to get everything just right and he usually knows what to do before I even ask what I'm looking for. I always end up with a great cut and lots of complements. I have short curly hair, which I like to keep tame and funky and Dana is the best at giving me exactly what I want each time! I'm sad to say he is relocating, but fortunately he will only be a few doors down to hair connection 1768 mass ave as of jan 3 and I even have the number 617-354-9133. Not only is Dana an excellent stylist, but he's funny and makes the whole session enjoyable from start to finish. I will continue to see him where ever he moves to as long as he's in the area. If I ever move and make a trip to Boston he will be included in my visit!

Dana is the most gifted hairdresser I have ever worked with. He gave me a stellar haircut, listened to exactly what I requested, and was extremely diligent in giving me a perfect haircut with a fantastic style. I have never had such a great experience as with Dana from M Salon. I could picture him eventually working at an extremely high end salon as well as managing/owning a salon, as his work is incredibly amazing. I must give Dana my highest rating - 5 stars. Thank you so much Dana. I am so grateful for your work!

Dana is a Genius with the scissors! He transformed my dry frizzy hair into beautiful coiffed curls! I can't believe the before and after. He angled my curls so they framed my face perfectly. He understands that short layers make me look like a poodle. I highly recommend girls with curly hair to go to see Dana at M Salon! You will be very happy with the cut and style.

I highly recommend going to Dana if you are looking for someone who knows how to cut curly hair. I have been going to Dana since about 2005 and am always happy with my cuts (including the one I got this morning). I have long fine curly (and wavy) hair, a lot of it. Depending on the humidity and lots of other factors my hair can look like a lion's mane or look (almost) perfectly tame with movie star curls. Dana knows I am low maintenance and all I'm going to do is wash it, put frizz stuff in it, and let it air dry. He gives me a cut that gives my hair a shape and frames my face, but that I can still put in a bun or ponytail to keep it out of my face. Dana sits you down with your hair dry and asks what you want, and gives you options based on your hair type and that would look flattering. He does not try to force any kind of upselling as far as products or color, etc. I also really like the salon itself, with all of its eclectic art and non-snobby feel. Dana has been cutting hair for decades and knows what he is doing. Find him at http://www.msaloncambridge.com/bio-dana.html

My West Coast daughter found Dana for me, on this site, five years ago. I resisted at first because Cambridge isn't so convenient for me, but I'm so glad I finally succumbed to her pressure. I've had nothing but great haircuts for five years now, and I'll follow Dana anywhere! I work full-time and work out a lot, and I need to be able to make quick transitions between activities. Since Dana, my hair is drip-dry, wash-n-wear, and always looks great. I shower in the morning, towel-dry my hair, and jump in the car. Some days I realize half-way through the day at work that I never combed it out, but it still looks good. For the first time in my life, I actually get complements on my hair! I've had my curls both short and long, and Dana has been great for me with both styles. I've convinced friends and relatives to use him, too. (My stepsister actually drove 3-1/2 hours from Upstate New York for a number of years, until gas prices went sky high.) The shop is funky and fun. I hope it will be there for me for a very long time.

The last review is spot on! I also had been going to Dana for a year or so and he did an okay job. The last time I went, however, I told him that I wanted to keep my hair long enough to pull back in a ponytail when I work out. I walked out of the salon with a mullet, business in the front, party in the back. Needless to say, I can't wear my hair up. I got a corrective haircut at Judy Jetson and am now trying to grow out the awful haircut that Dana gave me. As the last poster said, it's painful. I'll never go back to Dana and would not recommend him to others. (I also agree that the owner is rude and the receptionist isn't the most pleasant person either.)

I went to Dana based on recommendations and reviews from this site and he was amazing the first couple times that I saw him. He's very laid back and is of the mindset that all cuts should be wash and go. If you want to spend more time, great, but you shouldn't have to do that. Each time, however, I left with a short haircut. This was fine, except for my last visit where I was trying to grow out my hair for my wedding. He not only chopped off my hair, but I literally had a mullet. I kid you not. It was extremely disappointing (thank God I had over a year for it to grow out, but it was painful). If you want a short cut, he's excellent. If you want longer hair, I'm not sure Dana is the right hairdresser. (The salon owner is a bit weird and rude and the receptionist left something to be desired as well.)

Like many others, I found Dana Kaplan on this Web site and was amazed at the multitude of glowing reviews. I decided to give him a try – and I am so glad that I did. Dana truly is the “Curly Hair Whisperer.” Just about every other stylist I have ever been to has cut my thick, bushy curls into a style that looks nice when I leave the salon. However, I’m never able to duplicate the look and within a few weeks my hair starts growing out and looking bushy and messy again. This is not the case with Dana. He thinks about the grow-out phase and cuts my hair in a way that looks fantastic for weeks … and weeks. In addition, the styles he’s given me are easy to do on my own – which is hugely important to me since I have two children under 3 and little time for primping. I am able to look “put together” with minimum effort – all thanks to Dana the Curly Hair Whisperer! I have been going to Dana for over a year now and would never go anywhere else. Aside from his vast talent and decades of experience, Dana is a wonderful person. I look forward to chatting with him when I come in for a cut.

I went to Dana after reading all of the great reviews on this site, and after trying unsuccessfully to make peace with my curly hair a few times. I've had my hair cut by him 3 times now, and overall I have been pleased. The first cut was when my hair was long, and he shaped it up and brought out the curl really well. I've been wearing it curly ever since. I'd been wanting to cut it short for a while now and ran htis by him during my first cut. He was supportive and so I bit the bullet and had him cut it short the second time I visited M Salon. Still good results. The 3rd time I went back was for a trim to shape up my hair as I grew it out again, but this time the cut didn't last for much longer than about 2 weeks. It just didn't grow out very well and I found I needed another cut badly after just a few weeks. Although his fee of $45 is pretty inexpensive for the city, it wasn't cheap enough that I could afford it very often! I decided to try another salon (Twilight; I wrote a review for them, too), and was quite pleased. I think I will go back to them rather than to Dana/M given that I got more attention, just as good (if not better) a cut, and all for a cheaper price. I do have to say that I didn't find M Salon as a whole very comfortable. It's a funky place but the staff isn't particularly friendly (if not being downright rude). I had the same experience that it sounds like a lot of others have had with the owner and rest of the staff. Overall I was pleased with Dana's cuts, although I did not feel like he spent a lot of time on my hair (each cut was about 30 minutes). I felt like he knew what he was doing - of course, a good thing - but felt like he didn't spend a lot of time getting to know my hair.

I have had my hair cut at Bumble & Bumble in NYC, at Ouidad in NYC, by 2 different Deva stylists and everyone else in between. And none of them were terrible, but none of them paid as much attention to what I really wanted as Dana did. He was METICULOUS with the cut and fun to work with and my new 'do is easier than any 'do I've had, and my curls are healthy and beautiful, and I will continue to get my hair cut with Dana. A++

I just moved to MA from KY, leaving behind the best stylist for curly hair, EVER. I was in desperate need of a cut, though, and was getting nervous about finding a new curl expert. After reading Dana's reviews, I decided to give him a shot...and I don't regret it at all! Dana was wonderful! I like big hair, and most stylists tell me they don't and completely disregard what I want. But Dana actually agreed with me! He new what would look good with my face shape and what would be the best way to cut MY curls...knowing that not everyone's curls are NOT the same!!!!!! Dana listens! He lets you have input and combines what you want, with what he thinks is best for for your hair/face type. Plus, he's conservative...didn't take too much off at all! In fact, I'll probably go back in a month or so and get an inch or two more off. Dana's great!!!!!! I highly recommend him. His cut was quick...and he was all about letting me style my own hair, once I asked him. He understood that I had my own ""thing"" when it came to styling my hair. After I left, I kept noticing people giving me second looks on the train on my way home. After catching a glimpse of myself in the window, I totally understand why. MY HAIR ROCKS! Thanks Dana!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a very thick head of multi-racial curls and it is incredibly hard to find someone who it doesn't scare. Over the past 2 years Dana has cut my hair for both long and short styles and I have loved every single one! He layers the curls perfectly to avoid looking flat but without increasing the volume too mucn. 2 weeks ago I asked for a sporty yet femme short haircut and Dana did such an amazing job I have people stop me on the street to tell me what a great haircut I have. I have been able to recommend four people to Dana with just this cut as a reference!

After reading all of Dana's rave reviews, I jokingly said to my husband, "Do you want to go to Boston??" (We live in Pennsylvania -- 7 hours away) We decided to make a weekend out of it and see some of the other sites, and I was so excited that I was about to get the best hair cut of my life... or so I thought. Dana sat me in the chair and spent a brief few minutes talking to me about my hair. I told him that I had been to a Ouidad affiliate a few months earlier and I was told to grow out my layers, since layers add volume to my already thick hair. Dana convinced me that since my hair was so thick and course, I not only needed layers, but I needed "texturizing", because it is "too heavy" to be all one length. I figured he really knew what he was talking about since there were so many good reviews on him, so I let him do what he wanted. So he washed my hair and cut it WET, even though I told him that my hair has different "patches" of curliness and when people cut it as they would straight hair, it ends up looking uneven. He didn't seem to think any of my input would be a problem and pretty much just did what he thought would make my hair look good. I've waited four weeks to do this review, because I keep hoping that it'll look better, but my hair is a mess. It's lumpy and uneven, and totally has the "mushroom" look. I wish I knew how there were so many good reviews, and yet he goes against all that is written about cutting curly hair (cut it DRY, don't do layers or "thinning"). I'm so unbelievably disappointed, and now have to go for a hair-cut repair. All I can think is that he must do very well on wavy hair, or hair that has the same kind of curl all over.

After reading all the rave reviews about Dana on this website, I decided to give him a try. As I later found out, he used a haircutting technique on me called texturizing. It completely changed my hair into a ragged mess that is impossible to manage no matter how much conditioner I use. After TEN MONTHS I am still trying to grow out this nasty haircut, and my hair is no longer silky and shiny like it used to be. This is the most God-awful haircutting technique I have ever experienced. Worse yet, I've heard that a lot of hairdressers are using it without informing their clients, as Dana did with me. I can't see why any hairdresser would even use it at all, because the results are disastrous. I'm hoping that I get rid of all those ragged ends by this summer. I've literally had to grow an entirely new head of hair.

Finding a great haircut for curly hair, in a city full of stylists who want/need to blowdry your hair straight, has been virtually impossible for me. I have thick, curly hair that frizzes in humidity. I have been to all the high-end salons. I'm willing to pay whatever it takes. I have even made the trek to NYC. Dana has been my savior. He has been cutting my hair for over 2 years now. I go in, I sit in the chair and he cuts. It turns out great EVERY time. And it's not just a good cut, but it looks good on me. Its not expensive. I don't have to make appointments weeks in advance. I don't have to spend alot of time primping to get it to look good the next day. Maybe the salon is to your taste or not, maybe you like the owners dog or not. None of it matters to me. I just want a great cut. Lastly, not only have I not had a better cut in 20 years than the cuts I get from Dana, but I haven't had my hair cut by the same person more than twice for the past 16 years. I give a hairstylist 2 tries before moving on. I think maybe the first time they are getting to know my hair. The second time I think they don't know how to cut curly hair. Dana knows.

I am so lucky to have found Dana! I have very thick hair, and his haircuts are the first I've ever had that last more than 8 weeks. He has been the answer to my quest for the perfect stylist. Not only do his cuts last long, but they look great. My curls look the most even they've ever been. Dana has come up with great ideas for my hair and gives me cute and stylish cuts I never thought I could have pulled off, and they always look beyond amazing. I am continually recommending friends to him. He always cuts my hair beautifully at a reasonable price, and he is just a wonderful person to sit and talk with. I found him through this website and can only say that he has lived up to all of the wonderful comments written about him.

Based on the raves on this site, I went to Dana a couple of times. His cuts are okay, but no different than I've got at other salons. Plus, he did not know how to style my hair. Dana gave a great curly hair cut but the salon is absolutely vile. Maggie, the colorist and owner, is cold and downright rude. She has two huge dogs in there and one had an accident while I was in the salon...disgusting! The decor is frightening with creepy mannequins and murals everywhere. It's too bad because I would love to have Dana cut my hair but I can't stand to be inside that salon and have Maggie do the color...

I went to see Dana to see what he could do for my baby fine, curly hair. I found him to be pleasant, methodical, and a great communicator. Most importantly, he is very talented. The cut is outstanding, and now my curls simply fall into place. He exceeded my expectations.

Stylist: Owner - don't know her name
Rating:

I know Dana has gotten lots of rave reviews. I made the mistake, after many bad cuts, to go to the owner of M Salon because I thought she would be the best there. I have moderately curly/wavy hair that turns into a huge hairball if razors or texturizing scissors come near it. I specifically, clearly, loudly told her no razors, no texturizing scissors. (I'm a bit of a control freak so there's no chance of miscommunication). What do I see a few minutes into the cut? Texturizing scissors! I asked her what she was doing. "Oh, it needs that for volume" Worst cut ever. After a cut like this, I have to go get it cleaned up by someone else otherwise it will be a frizzy, tangly mess. I'm still furious about this. How can someone specifically ignore what you tell them and be really rude about it to boot? (The owner is the woman with short white hair a la Susan Powter (sp?) if you need to identify her).

I have been seeing Dana for over two years and he has never given me a bad haircut. From long curls to short. He is always patient and willing to work on the cut until I am happy. I recently went from below shoulder length to much shorter and we worked on the style for nearly an hour... it was the best decision i've ever made. Dana is a great focused cutter and never lets his mind wander while trimming the curls. He works very well under constraints- mine being a round face, and length enough to pull back. I have given out his card numerous times and have referred all my curlyhaired friends to him will continue to should from the rafters about how great he is.

Stylist: Dana - don't do it!
Rating:

I have to say that after all of the rave reviews posted here I was quite disappointed with the cut I got from Dana. He took off several inches more than I wanted so the length when curly went from mid-back to above my shoulders - not what I had asked for! And the first time I styled it myself I found several little clumps of hair that were about 1/2 to 1 inch longer than the rest... accidental oversight? intentional? Who knows, but they weren't evenly distributed and looked ridiculous when I straightened my hair. I went WAY out of my way to see Dana and after this experience would NEVER recommend him to anyone, ever.

Dana is fabulous, and very sweet. He cut my hair before my brother's wedding. This is a daunting job given that it's wavy and very fine and has several weird cowlicks. The cut was fabulous, he respected my wish to keep my hair long, and he had some great hair care tips for me. Nicest thing about it from a money perspective is that it's grown out very well. Three months later it was still fresh with almost no split ends!

I have been very frustrated with my hair - no matter how it's been cut lately, I still have to spend too long diffusing it dry and then fussing over styling the curls (upwards of 30 min a morning!). Based on the reviews I decided to give Dana a try. He spent a good amount of time looking at my hair, talking about what I was looking for, etc. and determined that my hair was to heavy and really needed to be thinned out. He did that (without using thinning shears), then had me show him how I style it so that we could see what happened. He even let me stay there for a half hour until my hair dried naturally, just to see what happened. I am in love with the cut! He did a great job, and was a pleasure to spend time with. The price can't be beat either for a Boston area salon! I'll definitely go back (although I will likely continue to see my "regular" stylist for my color for a little while longer).

He worked with my natural style and when I asked him how it would grow out he said that it would grow out well so that it would be simple and easy to take care of. He did cut it wet but didn't cut off too much at once, and kept the length that I wanted. Great stylist; I wouldn't hesitate to go back.
