I absolutely love planet curls. Gerri's son Charlie cut my hair and was amazing. He listened to me and told me what he was doing step by step. My curls have never been treated with so much love. A must visit for curly girls!
They really know how to take care of curls at Planet Curls. Gerri Curtis did an amazing job on my hair. Best experience I have ever had at a salon.
I have seen Gerri twice now and I am so happy I did. She really knows what she is doing with curls, she great with color too. She is so busy all the time so book appointment in advance. I get so many compliments when I leave the salon. I highly recommend her for curly hair.
Best haircut I've ever had. My curls have new life. I will definately go back to Gerri.
I had to make an Saturday appointment a few weeks in advance. That should say something right there! Gerri has a fan for life. She actually listens! She understands! I told her how I came about being allergic to sodium laurel suffate by a dermo. And how during the recovery after knee surgery - I just let my hair curl. Found naturallycurly.com - and how I was implementing it for my hair. She actually UNDERSTOOD. She noticed that my curls at my neckline were very very curly and discussed the profile I had, and suggested the haircut ideas with me. Yup she cut each curl separately - and I was watching. She suggested the leave in conditioner - wanted me to feel it - the thin-ness and slick of it. And told me to use it with the Ouidad I liked so much. She did suggest the NO POO since she new I wanted to try it and see how my skin liked it. She wasnt pushy! She added me to her mailing list for her CURL parties! This morning I did my hair myself... and it is soo curly - bouncy - no my pyramid head!! Today - my husband keeps looking at me saying "I've never seen you sooo happy after a haircut"... as I walk around swishing my curls. Finally Im not bawling after another botched haircut. Deleriously happy! Finally someone that understands... she gets it. That's priceless! PS: I was given her name from another client. Someone I litterally stopped one day at the office building to comment how cute her curls where. very bouncy! I'm so glad I did. Makes me even prouder to be curly! :)
I have big, dry, biracial 3C hair so hair dressers have in the past made me feel guilty by burdening them with a longer-than-expected haircut. Gerri was actually excited about my hair and did a great job. Dry cuts are a must for me and she did a great job with that. Based on the reviews here, I put my faith in her and told her to do whatever she thinks looks good. She gave me nice layers and kept the length, which were my only requests. The price is reasonable ($65) and she doesn't pressure you at all to buy products (maybe it was because I already have so many of them). She suggested using DevaCurl deep conditioner as a leave-in styling product for me since my hair is so dry, and it worked out really well. Her son washed my hair and did a very good job too, using DevaCurl products. Gerri is awesome and I may make the trip back to Houston just for my next haircut :)
I like the way that Gerri dry cuts my curls. It's hard to find someone that understands my hair. The witty banter is great. I just feel like she is so booked that I don't feel like I get that little something extra. That's the only reason I gave her a 4 and not a 5.
I was so excited about having Gerri cut my hair. I use great products (not deva) that make my curls look beautiful so I wanted a curly cut to match. My sister told me about naturallycurly.com because she found an awesome hairstylist in Denver. Her hair looks great! Unfortunately, I received the second worst haircut I have ever had today at the Blue Mambo. Gerri is very nice and I am envious of all the others who have left reviews and had such a great experience. I hate my hair now! I was embarrassed to leave my house without a hat on! It is like 2 different layers of hair. The line is very distinctive! The front sides of my hair are not even the same length! I'm sure most of you understand that the shorter the hair, the curly it gets. This is the way my hair works. It's like she cut the top half of my hair one length and the rest she left as it was. I have stray areas of hair that are noticeably shorter than others and it's just a mess! The worse part is...I will have to let it grow out from the shortest point or I will have a very short haircut if have someone try to fix it!! My hair has never been above my shoulders in length! I'm simply mortified! I'm so happy I didn't have her do my color today! I'm am a very unhappy and dissatisfied customer. I can't make a determination for anyone else but I will NEVER return to the Blue Mambo! Good luck, Allaboutmycurls!
I have 3b curls and I've gone to Gerri three times (I live a 10 hour drive away) over the last 2 years. I love the cut I get from her. Best I've ever had. She is not pushy at all about selling Deva. She asked me my routine (does not include Deva) and that was all. She does want to educate you about your curls. If you straighten, you will damage the curls and she is not afraid to tell you this. I'll go to her again and again and send every curly girl I see in Houston to see her, too.
Gerri does a fantastic job cutting curly hair. She was trained at Deva and really knows her stuff. She is always willing to listen and suggest ideas. She has a very easy going nature and is very friendly. I have not found any other stylist in Houston that knows the correct technique. Gerri has my vote!
I went down to Blue Mambo for my first "curly cut" last week and I thought Gerri was great! She was friendly and chatty, but didn't seem to force conversation. She cut my long frizzy hair dry and washed it with Deva products. She gave great instruction on how to use them, suggested that I start plunking my hair post-shower and styled it. Overall, I am very happy with my cut, and have managed to style it myself daily ever since with similar results. I'd recommend her for sure!
Gerri was able to determine exactly what was wrong with the shape and texture another hair dresser had given me. She took a lot of time with me cutting each curl the devachan way. Come to find out she was one of the original hairstylists trained by Lorraine herself! She uses all Deva but she's not pushey about it at all. The shape is so much better now! She also showed me how put clips at the root to prevent the dreaded flat top when styling. I would definitely go back!
To begin, if you have shorter than past your shoulders hair that is coarse in texture, I would go somewhere else. Gerri's specialty seems to be long hair that has more of a silky/fine texture. That is the hair type I've noticed in and out of the salon. I first went in after hearing raves about Gerri and got a so-so haircut (and like some other reviewers have said, be ready for an earful if you use another product or don't do things "her" way). After more than a year, I started thinking that maybe I had misjudged the so-so haircut , or maybe she just had an "off" day, and decided to give Gerri another try. Well, I have not cried over a bad haircut since I was about 13 years old, and at 40, I was in tears. I walked out with the shortest, strangest looking haircut I've ever had. I'm not ever sure it's a style. Not to mention, after she cut it dry and had run her fingers through it (now hair is a frizzy mess), she said "I think it looks pretty good, do you even want it washed?" Seriously? I have a feeling it was b/c the next client was waiting. So, if you have long, silky, fine curls, you might be ok....otherwise, I'd stay away.
Last week I went to the Blue Mambo to get my hair cut by Gerri after reading some of her reviews. When I first went there I surprised at the quaintness of the salon. Also everyone seemed quirky but in a good way. I sat down I tried to explain what I wanted (a shorter haircut) also I wanted to get rid of this frizzy section in the back of hair where it unmanageable. She couldn't really understand what I meant about getting rid of it she just told me that all curly hair has more kinky or curlier sections than the rest. Overall my haircut was pretty decent, there were a couple pieces that were to long when I put it in a ponytail. Mainly everything was good except for 1. Conversation, she is pretty opinionated (she HATES the Keratin treatment and believes only in DevaCurl. Also I am not really a chatty person and she kept trying to make conversation after general chitchat. 2. Her son was helping her (he was going into the business) and he did a lot of the work when she brought in a another client. She cut and applied product to my hair. He washed and dried and styled my hair after it was dry. He was very good at everything but I would have liked to know that I would be bounced between people.
I don't want to completely gripe about Geri. First, as someone else pointed out, I always waited and she always seemed overbooked and too involved with everything else going at the salon. She lost my color card several times. She is an AMAZING colorist! She made my greys disappear, and whenever she gave me "highlights" she didn't just strip down the hair and rinse in toner, she tinted the hair instead so that I didn't end up with blond streaks in my dark brown hair after a few months. As far as cutting, a couple of times she used the Deva style cutting, and it was fine, but other times she would comb and cut. It was confusing. She always put me under the drying hood, which I don't mind, but she always styled it so that the hair looked great, but it didn't look "right" on ME. I suppose she is perfect for most people, but not for me.
I just got my haircut at Blue Mambo by Gerri after seeing some great reviews. I must say that I love Gerri's approach to cutting curly hair! She made my curls come to life and look fabulous :-) The salon is tucked away on Chelsea street, right off Montrose. I walked in and it was very welcoming. She looked at my curls, asked me my styling routine, and asked what I was looking to do to my hair. I told her I wanted something different and I was willing to go shorter. I always have my hair really long as I have 3b curls that need length to stay tame. I was wrong! The way she cut my hair made my 3bs spring to life and I love it! (I have to post a picture soon) Overall, I was there for 2 hours, which I was fine with as she needed to asses my curls that she cut dry, and she cut them one by one to make sure they fell correctly without the dreaded poof. She is a curl pro and I highly recommend other Houston curlies to go to Gerri :-) I would also recommend that you go during the week as it appears less chaotic and she can really focus on you and tell you all about curly hair care :-) Thanks Gerri!
After all the glowing reviews about how great this place was, I decided to give it a shot. I was initially really excited but left disappointed. I wanted a cut that would look good both curly and straight. I also wanted to keep the length. The stylist trimmed it (not more than an inch) and told me that there were not any split ends even when I insisted/knew that there were! She also spent most the time talking to other customers and stylists or asking me questions pertinent to herself(I guess she was interested in what I do for a living) rather than teaching me about my curly hair! She put me under the hair dryer thing while she took another customer! After all this, I spent $70 on the "haircut". I don't mind spending money but why should I spend $70 on something I could do myself!! I will not be going here again.
Gerri just gave me the best cut I've ever had! After many years of traumatic hack jobs, I was natually skeptical and didnt expect too much. But it looked great when i left the salon and the true test is always the day after a cut, when you do it yourself at home, and it looked great; Again! She did exactly what I wanted giving my long curls shape without loosing too much length. I will definately be reccomending her to all my curly friends.
Gerri has given me the best haircut I've ever had! She's been trained in CG method, cut my hair dry and was totally responsive to my questions & concerns. She definitely knows curly hair and how to work with it--a real gem!
Gerri DOES use Lorraine Massey's haircutting techniques and the haircut looks good, but she always double-booked me with other clients. She'd spend 15 minutes cutting my hair, then wash it and stick me under a bonnet hairdryer to go cut someone else's hair. The final straw was when she left me in the middle of a haircut to work on someone else's hair color process. Then, when I told her I didn't have time to sit under the bonnet dryer, she handed the hairdryer to me to dry it myself while she went to do the next step on the other woman's hair color! No way am I paying $60 for that kind of service. I won't be going back.
I am now a fan of Gerri Curtis. If curly hair is like a topiary, she is a master gardener. I was going elsewhere, and had became increasingly dissatisfied, so I made an appointment. Gerri asked me about my hair, my routine, and gave me some new tips. She cut it dry, and then co-washed it herself, alligator clipped it, and put me under the dryer. My curls have never been so well formed and frizz-free. She is knowledgeable about all the products, techniques, and lingo. Her knowledge, experience, and demeanor make a cut with Gerri money very well spent.
I had a great experience with Gerrie. She listened to me trying to describe what I wanted and she gave me a great cut. She is very nice and knows what she is talking about. I would recomend everyone to Gerrie. 11/03/2007
I recently moved to Houston, and after having worked with a curly hair specialist I was VERY hesitant to trust my curls to anyone. I decided to give Gerri a shot and I am VERY glad I found her!!! She took the time to ask me what I wanted. Anyone who has had a TRUE curly cut knows that curly hair is supposed to be cut dry. Gerri cut my hair dry and was very meticulous with each and every curl. I absolutely recommend her. She has actually worked in NY at the Lorraine Massey salon. She is very knowledgeable about caring for curly hair-what to do and not to do. The only negative I can mention is the price. I found the price was a little high, but considering how satisfied I was it was well worth it.
After trying to decide from several salons I decided on Blue Mambo. Gerri was awesome and patient with my hair. She gave me advice on how to care and maintain my curls. A few days have passed and I did exactly what she told me on how to maintain my curls and my curls are still well defined with diva curl products. No residue or stiff hair left just soft, full and bouncy curls. I am definitely a true believer that a great haircut and awesome products make the difference. I have curly ringlets and if you need to see pics of my haircut email me.
I went to give Gerri a try after reading the other review for her here, and I don't regret it! She listened to what I wanted and gave me great layers. She also didn't pressure me to do anything I didn't want, nor did she rush. She's sweet, and the rest of the staff is very friendly as well. I normally go to small barber shops, but everyone made me feel really welcome here. The atmosphere was nice and fun, too. It's so relieving to know I can go to someone who will cut my hair without wetting or brushing it. She was actually trained in New York at Devachan and met Lorraine Massey and uses the Devacurl products. Highly recommended!
I have fine curly hair, and have been fighting it most of my life. I finally decided to go natural, but it was a challenge to find someone that is good with curly hair. I found Gerri through the Deva website, and learned that she is a curl care consultant here in Houston. I read Lorraine's book, and really wanted my hair cut that way. I'm so glad that I was persistent, and am very happy with Gerri. I would recommend Gerri to anyone with curly hair.
