- Mike Manchester
Sep 01, 2013 - When I walked in, I came with a laptop and a presentation (ya, total nerd here... even turns hair appointments into a boring research talk) of my hair history and what I wanted in my new hairstyle. Mike was so reassuring and indicated my history just made perfect sense to him. He also said my desired style would be very easy to achieve (which greatly comforted me) He had an explanation for everything (including my flaky scalp... combing only in showers and drying under a towel together with oily scalp = flakes!) and patiently listened to my complaints, hopes and desired outcome. I made sure to indicate that although I wanted my hair to be as long as possible, health came first. Should he feel hair is damaged at a certain length, I told him to chop it off. First thing’s first: Mike is a curly hair GURU. He knows the ins and outs of curly hair and surprised me with stories indicating his expertise in managing men’s curly hair in addition to women’s. Mike is very easy to talk to and did a great job preparing hair and the scalp as well. With so many decades of experience I can promise he knows what he is doing. He cut my hair dry which I’ve read is essential for curly girls. He took care of my flaky scalp first and trimmed 12-15 inches off the back, and 6-8 inches off the front (bye-bye damage!). He then cut my bangs. Although I could not see what my hair would look like after typical curly hair styling (he combed through it and so it became a fuzzy straight mess), my hair felt good and my head felt lighter. After shampoo-ing and washing, we discussed drying techniques. We suggested a modified-twist and scrunch technique that worked remarkably well for my hair. After diffusing, using plant-derived Aveda products (that I later bought from him), and blow-drying my bangs into the desired style, I was so impressed I could hardly stop grinning. The blow-drying did everything I hoped it would and I loved loved LOVED my bangs. I saw I lost quite a bit of hair but I was surprisingly OK with that. It felt healthy and although I wish the layers were more different lengths, I understand that the layers were relatively similar because of my sorry state of hair before and my request for as much length possible. Maybe in a couple months when my hair is longer and still healthier I can ask for trims only on layers so that they become relatively shorter and the layers look more prominent. Altogether very nice layering and bang style and cutting. Everyone at work gushed about my new haircut and I was a very happy customer. It’s been a week and a half since my haircut and I can’t tell you how happy I am with it. I got very lucky... my first time in a salon and I left very satisfied. Although the cut was a little pricey, I think it was worth it. Communicate what you want with Mike, and leave the rest to him—he is an expert and listens to what you want!
