MAK's Latest Salon Reviews

Beauty Naturals Supply & Salon - Gaithersburg, Maryland, United States
Stylist:
Catherine

Sep 15, 2011 - If you are like me you will go to great lengths to find a good curly-hair stylist and I have often joked that I should try to get a job writing salon reviews! I have researched for days on end the location, menu, and naturallycurly.com reviews of every stylist I have ever been to. I've traveled hours and even gone out of state for a good cut! I am telling you all of this to emphasize that I am very picky and also do not want pay a fortune for a haircut. Since my last stylist moved, I desperately need to find someone - preferably someone who could do a Deva-cut. I found Catherine at Beauty Naturals Supply & Salon -A HIDDEN JEWEL!! have never met a more warm, gracious and unpretentious stylist EVER! Although I was apprehensive, she took her time with my cut and we chatted about what I might like to do with the color. The finished cut was perfect - all the curls fell into place without too much length having been cut off. I knew I had found my new stylist! I made a follow-up appointment then and there for a cut and color. Catherine is located in the Kentlands - a great location if you are traveling from the suburban D.C. area. Her salon is clean, neat and unpretentious. The address is Main Street, but the sign is difficult to see from the street so park in lot behind the building. There is a sign on the rear entrance to her her studio. PLEASE go see her. The number is 301.977.9039. If you leave a message she is very quick to return calls.

Biago - Clarksville, Maryland, United States
Stylist:
Rachel

Jul 11, 2010 - My first experience at Biago came as a result of wanting to find a Deva-Curl stylist closer to my home. The salon is in an upscale shopping center; the decor is contemporary without feeling pretentious. The receptionist was fabulous - unfortunately she was not the one who booked my appointment when I called and my reservation was made on the wrong day. I had made an appointment with Lynn ( based on the reviews here) , but because of the mix-up, Lynn was on vacation. The receptionist was very apologetic and quickly called another Deva-Curl certified stylist who would be there shortly. I was willing to wait and the receptionist did everything she could to make me feel welcome - a tour of the salon? did I want anything to drink? Meet our other staff members., etc. I waited about 20 minutes for Rachel to arrive. She was younger than the stylists I am used to seeing, but since she is officially "Deva-Curl" certified, I assumed this was a guarantee that I did not have to give too much direction. WRONG! I agreed to go shorter. However, Rachel clearly had no idea that when she cut 4 inches off my hair type 3b, it would get springy-er and actually be shorter in the back than the less springy curls in the front. When she was done I had lost four inches and had what amounted to a bob - which as anyone with curls knows, is about the most unflattering cut you can have. I think I could have gotten the same cut at the Hair Cuttery. The final disgust came when I paid the bill - the web site lists women's cuts starting at $50. My cut? $75 plus tip. My impression is that Rachel attended whatever training necessary to become "Deva-Curl" certified in order to charge more, but does not do many of these cuts. I should have taken the time to go to PATRIK ALAN HAIR STUDIO (410.757.5050) and will do so from now on. He is an artist that truly understands his craft and will have to fix a very expensive mistake.
