AJ Hair Salon - Chicago, Illinois, United States

Feb 03, 2012 - Based on the recommendations from this site, I visited the salon twice. First time I chopped down a lot of my hair to try something new. She layered the back so much that after a year of growth, my hair is still very think on the bottom and growing it out has been a nightmare. Second time I went to see if maybe she'll do something better with my already bad hairstyle, but besides trimming the ends, she didn't do anything to help the curls form better or fix the awful choppy layers. She looked lost and confused as I tried to pinpoint the areas that needed to be fixed AFTER she already cut and styled it. I was very disappointed that she didn't have a clue about styling curly hair...she added a very light curling cream to my hair before drying it. Being a 3B which frizzes very easily...I ended up with super poofy bird's nest when I left the salon, no ringlets, no curls, just a big mess.. My hair needs hold- it needs a strong gel or mousse and/or smoothing serum to form and hold curls and diminish frizz, as a curly hair expert everyone claims she is, she should know this. I can do a 100% better job at styling my hair at home. So disappointed, I almost cried on my way home because it was a complete waste of my $$...I can't wear my hair down curly because it looks awful, so I'm wearing it pulled back until I have a few more inches of growth to try to even out the haircut. Now, if I can just find a stylist that will fix it.

Sep 19, 2008 - I have fine, curly hair that I wanted to cut fairly short because I just had a baby and no time to spend hours on hair in the morning. I've been to this salon years ago but was very dissapointed with my cut and never went back. Well, because it's so close to my home I went in again and I requested a stylist who knows how to cut curly hair, I was sure they probably don't have one. But, they pointed me to a stylist name Ela and she has curly hair as well. I explained to her most common mistakes stylists make when cutting my hair, what I want and need. She listened, washed my hair and started cutting. She gave me a great bob with layers, when dried, my curls blended beautifully into each other, unlike other haircuts I had where there were strings of single curls just hanging randomly- that's because of my fine hair and layering tends to do that. My hair has volume that I need, it looks great and it's super easy to take care of. The salon is big but not pretentious or fancy, reasonably priced for a cut and style.
