Some of us have a woman in our life who always seem to be championing a cause. She’s empathetic, kind and generous to a fault and is a wealth of information for any and everything environmental and humanitarian. But with such a unique woman comes a unique problem. What on earth do you get her as a Christmas gift? If you are still at a loss, read on for some gift giving advice.
Gifts for the Conscious Curly
Fair trade oils and butters
Many of you might not know this but a lot of the products that we use are made by persons in third world countries. These people are underpaid and overworked for their services in deplorable conditions to keep production costs low.
If there is a curly in your life who cares about who makes her products and where they’re made, buy her a gift basket of her favorite butters and oils that have all been produced by people who have been paid well for their time and efforts and who work under good conditions.
Eco-friendly combs
For the curly who loves to reduce, reuse and recycle it can be hard purchasing combs and brushes that can not be recycled. Unfortunately, the average beauty supply tools fall into this category, but there are eco-friendly and biodegradable combs and brushes to be found.
Bioflora combs are made from natural and sustainable materials, and are sure to satisfy the conscious curly in your life.

Low-flow shower head
As women, we can spend a lot of time in the shower, especially when wash day comes, which means we can waste a lot of water.
For the eco conscious curly who doesn’t want to go old school by using buckets of water to manage her water usage, consider getting her a low flow shower head. These shower heads work by pumping air into the water stream and or forcing the water through smaller holes so less water is used without sacrificing pressure.
Many also come equipped with a shut off valve to stop the water flow from the head when performing shower duties to save water without having to turn the taps on and off and readjust the temperature. The good news is that these shower heads can be purchased from most hardware stores.
Bamboo combs and brushes
Bamboo is a great alternative to plastic and wood as it’s 100% biodegradable and a renewable resource. Unlike wood made from trees that can take up to 25 years to reach maturity, bamboo reaches maturity in a mere three years meaning that it can be farmed rather than cutting down forests.
If your curly likes to use bristle brushes, you can also purchase a bamboo brush with boar bristles that are the natural alternative to plastic.
Donating to persons in need
This gift idea will take a tad bit more organization, but if done well, will have your curly smiling well beyond Christmas day. For this type of curly, the best gift that she can get is one that will help others.
Rather than spending money on an expensive gift for her, use the money instead to help make Christmas merry for those in need. You can even get your family and friends in on it. Ask them to use the money they would have spent on her gift to do things like purchase non perishable food items to donate to a shelter that feeds the homeless on Christmas day or purchase toys to donate to a women and children’s shelter on her behalf.
If you’re feeling particularly festive, you can call ahead to a shelter housing children, get the exact number of boys and girls and purchase gifts accordingly. Then ask one of your male family members or friends to dress up like Santa and pay the shelter a visit with her to hand out the toys on Christmas.
