I did mine like that for years, brushed it back with a Denman, tied it back (pretty tightly) then smoothed it all down further with a bristle brush and hairspray(!)- all whilst wet. It didn't seem to damage it at all. I don't do it these days though, I wait until it's dry then just finger comb it all back, so it's a bit bumpy and less severe looking, like others have said.
