How bad are straightening irons?

I heard from two different stylist that it's best to have your straightener on a very high setting. That way the hair straightens right away and you don't have to keep going over the same piece 2-3 times to get it right. That's only when it's curly though, not when you're just fixing some waves the day after you straighten.
