Welcome. Coconut oil is one of the few oils that can make it's way into your hair's cortex. I like to use it as a prewash. Since the oil is making its way inside your hair, this takes a while. You want to leave it on at least 10 minutes, but something on the order of an hour would work even be better. I've also started to play with coconut oil for sealing. I've been mixing it with shea, but will try it on it's own too. Some people use it to SOTC. I found that my hair does not like coconut oil left on my dry hair, but likes coconut oil on wet or soon to be washed hair. Other people's hair has the exact opposite reaction and only likes coconut oil on dry hair. The blog in the link below suggests applying coconut oil and water to your hair before swimming to prevent chlorine damage. I use coconut oil because it prevents protein loss, adds moisture, can help prevent hygral fatigue.
