I do that style every now and then- I call it my "Hollywood hair" look. Essentially, you have to flat iron and then use a curling iron for some of those soft waves. Since that's extremely damaging, what I do is let my hair air dry curly and then flat iron it once it's dry - right over the curls. Then I go to bed with it flat ironed so there's time for some natural oils to return to my hair. In the morning, instead of touching up with a flat iron, I just use a curling iron and curl random chunks of hair. Probably a hair spray to hold it would be good- I just don't like hair spray.
