More votes for Steinbeck, the Brontes, Orwell, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dickens, Twain, Victor Hugo, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Mockingbird.

I'd add - mostly more modern classics, I gues you'd say:

Gone With the Wind
Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged
Any James Michener
Any Pearl S. Buck
Any Herman Wouk
Any John Jakes
Any Taylor Caldwell
Any Louisa May Alcott
Any Francis Parkinson Keyes
Tennessee Williams plays
Any Ernest Hemingway
Any Daphne DuMaurier
Any Edna Ferber
Any Gwen Bristow
Any Frank Yerby
Any Eugenia Price, esp. the Lighthouse series

Probably other very obvious ones that I'm not thinking of right now. "Classic" might be pushing it a little for some, but they're well worth reading.

I loved the Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. The only others I've read by her were Cat's Eye and The Blind Assassin. IMO, they don't compare. Maybe I need to try some of the others though, Snickdog.
