How does your hair compare to your parents

Like Tree1Likes

I don't know about any of you but I love looking at old pics of my parents and comparing them to me. I especially love looking at their hair because it sooooo makes sense why I have the hair I have.

I've attached two pics of my mother. One from when she was a teenager (she is on the left) and one from a few days ago. The next pic is of my father from the 70's (love the stache and the overalls dad!) and the last is of me a couple weeks ago.

My mom has super fine super low density blond stick straight hair.

My dad had (i say had because he is all grey now and his hair is very fine now) big coarse dark colored curls.

I got my mom's fine low density blond hair... but my dad's curl pattern.

Over the years I've learned to love it!
(except for the fact I'm pretty sure I have 6-10 strands of my mothers hair around my ears and at the nape of my head... the won't even hold a wave! lol)

Very interesting thread!

I find that both my brother and I have the same wave pattern as our father, while I have the same texture as my mother.

Dogs and nature abhor a vacuum.
my mother blow dries her hair strait everyday & doesn't like my curly hair. My sister has the same pattern as me, but it not as strong. I think it's due to the length of her hair (almost waist). However, i'm the only blonde in my family. My mother was when she was younger, but it went light brown in her late teens. My sister and dad both have dark brown hair.

started CG on 6/25/12.
  • 2c with a strait underneath
  • normal elasticity on top, none on the underneath
  • Fine side of Normal
  • Thick hair
  • Poriosity is a mystery. I think its all over the place.
Ljp, I love that pic of your Dad!

Man, I really need to start taking pics of my hair! Most of the pictures I have are from before I stopped flatironing it.

My mom's hair has a slight wave. Like one swoop on the side of her head. She mostly keeps it short. Her hair is fine and thick. She was a natural chestnut brunette before she went grey.

My brother has gorgeous curls that he cut off when he was 15 and refuses to grow out. His hair is medium texture. He and I both have naturally dark hair.

I have no info on my father's hair because I've never met the guy lol. But here's pics of the fam and me. Sorry for the pic of me and my brother. There's nothing he loves more than an Instagram filter

Both of my parents love my hair. My mom bought me the first edition of the curly girl handbook almost 10 years ago. She also bought me a years supply of Quidad conditioner and gel (unfortunately I didn't love it and still have a couple bottles laying around)

I used to wish I had my mom's silky hair but now I wish I had more body like my dad's hair. He looks sooo cool in this pic!!

my biggest problem is that my hairs on my crown belong to my dad and the hair at the nape and around my ears belong to my mom... and the hair around my face is something in between.

it's tough having 3 people's hair all on my head!
I inherited my dad's hair almost to a T (color, curl pattern, texture, density, everything). What's funny though, is that I never knew my mom had naturally curly hair too until the last few years. She didn't know either! She used to always use hot rollers, so she never saw her hair natural. I don't know if her texture changed with age, but she now has lovely 2c whirls and curls, and she is letting it go natural (gray and all) for the first time.

My favorite brands are Kinky Curly, As I am, Curly Kinks, Curl Junkie, and Darcy's Botanicals. Also love sealing with oils (loving argan oil right now) and styling with jelly products (KCCC is my current favorite). Mostly trying to keep it simple!

Your parents hairs are like my parents hairs, even my dad has pics of his hair in that same do lol! My dad has thick coarse curls and my mom has superfine but thick straight blonde hair. As a baby my hair was first super fine and blonde, so blonde you could barely see it. As a child I had thicker straight black hair and when I reached my late teens I developed really coarse wavy hair. I'm also the only one of my siblings with curls.

Both my husband and I have dark brown/black hair and coarse thick curls/waves, his is curlier than mine but my daughters have thick hair but it's fine and straight lol. One has brown hair and one has a sandy blonde hair. My oldest daughter, who is 5, is beginning to develop and underlayer of wavy hair but the top layer is still straight.

So funny what genetics can do!

My dad had curly hair (spanish looking hair), my mom had very straight native american type hair.

Me & the siblings have wavy/curly hair, boys fine, girls coarse.

But my kids? No they split back out - one nearly straight haired, one curlier than me, two are too young to tell. Their dad has straight hair but his brother is curly. It is very funny to me in a happy way because I am mixy but very white lady looking, none of the kids have my complexion, two are Very Much Lighter, two are much more tan colored, but none of them in the middle. I like having a variety pack like that.

My dad's hair was never long enough for me to tell, but I believe it was curly. My mom's is curly. Mine was much curlier as a child until I fried it.

My dad's hair was thick, straight and black before he went gray and it started thinning. My mom's hair is naturally light brown, wavy and fine.
My hair seems to be a mixture of the two, but a lot more like my mom's. My hair is fairly thick and coarse, like my dad's, but it's brown, wavy and prone to frizz like my mom's. My hair is curlier than my mom's and a lot darker, but I definitely inherited my hair from her.
Somehow, my sister ended up with silky, shiny, blonde, slightly wavy hair. Lucky her
I get my waves from my mom and grandpa who both have Curly hair. But I think my texture must have something to do with my Lebanese grandma. Does anyone else have any middle eastern descent? My dads hair is straight and black. But my favorite thing I inherited from my mom is my hair birthmark. Both my mom and I have natural white streaks in the same spot. The curly hair gene is dominant so I hope my children get it too! Haha

Curly hair runs on both sides of my family. In older pics of my dad his hair is blonde and loose waves, my mom has a tighter curl pattern that she wore more often in a picked out fro. She was blonde when she was younger as well. Both parents now have dark brown hair and they wear it super short where you can't tell if it's curly or straight. My older brother and twin sister have the looser wave pattern like our Dad's and I think I got stuck in between my Mom's pattern and Dad's. All my families ancestors came from the European area. My Dad's family came to America in the 1700s from Germany.

combination hair.
2c on top - low elasticity
3a&b scattered underneath - normal elasticity.
fine texture. thin density. A lot of it.
porosity: normal to high.
loves protein and moisture.
BSACV as needed.

products may vary. i'm a PJ.
loving Curl Junkie, Curly Kinks, and AS I Am.
My hair is in between both. My mom has finer, looser curls. My dad had tighter curls and really thick hair. Both their hair grew pretty fast. My hair has pretty tight curls and is very thick. Very dense. (Except in my special area. Sounds dirty, but sadly, no. I have a thin spot. )

Wish I had pics.
My dad has thick, dark brown, wavy hair, but it's never long enough to tell HOW wavy it is... But I guess it's like mine, 2c. My grandpa and gran-grandpa also has/had wavy hair.

My mum's hair is very dark blond/light brown, a bit thinner than mine and only a bit wavy, 2a I would guess.

And my own hair: it's blonde, pretty thick and a 2c curl pattern with some 3a ringers
My dad permed his for a while, but is/was pretty stick straight and fine. My parents split up when I was young and I was raised by my dad and stepmom. My stepmom and her sister and her mother have/had curly hair. My maternal mother always has it straightened, so I don't really know what she ha, though I suspect it's wavy. I seem to remember my grandmothers both having wavy/curly hair, but I've no idea if that was natural or set with rollers.

Hair bio:

Mom's hair: fine, porous, dense, stick straight

Dad's hair: medium-to-coarse, wavy (2c-ish), medium density

My hair: fine, porous, dense, 2c-3a. Kind of the worst of both worlds, in terms of how hard my hair is to deal with. Getting my mom's texture + dad's curl pattern makes it frizzy and wild and hard to take care of.

My brother is in the exact same boat, but he's never minded, because he's a heavy metal guitarist. No, I am not kidding. I have naturally fluffy heavy metal hair.
2c, fine, extremely dense, color-treated, high porosity.

My mom has fine, thin 3a ish hair. My dad, course possibly 4a/b/c hair. Very tight course thick hair. I have very dense, medium 3b hair.

My mom has fine, stick straight hair. Dad has wavy (2b-ish), thick, dense hair.

I have fine hair like my mom, but dense like my dad. It's curlier than both of theirs, I'm a mix of 2b, 2c, and 3a. Mine is also kind of the worst of both worlds in terms of how hard it is to manage, it's definitely on the curlier side, but being fine yet dense just means it's usually wild.

My mom has black, fine, super soft, 2a hair. My dad had brown, very curly (think 3b). My dad even had dreads before I was born, he called his hair "the white-boy Afro", now it is all shaved off. As a kid, he had blond straight hair. But around 12, in family pictures you can see one curl that stuck up. His hair also turned brown. Eventually, his hair became like mine but tighter. Like my dad, I had straight/wavy (2a), brown hair, and I got some curls around puberty. Now I have 2b at the back with 2c underneath, and 3b corkicelli and loose corkscrews in the front.
