Not sure what my hair needs right now!
OK well I wanted a bit of a break from my typical every day cg method and the last two weeks I've been co washing or lo-pooing everyday, instead of doing second day hair. I also took a break from my gel and tried only mousse and air dried or diffused and well I got a weird mix of limp and undefined stringy waves. So I went back to my kccc and kckt method of applying to soaking wet air.
Anyway during my break Ive been touching my hair a lot (hard habit to kick) and noticed that its feeling pretty dry again. Im still not sure if my hair likes protein or not but I do know it likes moisture! Im pretty positive my hair is medium porosity, it doesnt take long to dry; maybe 3 hours tops. I also have coarse hair. I use suave naturals with coconut and my hair doesn't really do to great with that. So can any one suggest a better product to co-wash with? Also I have yet to purchase a deep conditioning treatment, any suggestions? Maybe I need to stop lo-pooing again because its drying it out? Thanks in advance ya'll!

I would definitely suggest a deep treatment. A lot of ppl like GVP CB especially if you want something that is cheap and easily accessible. Personally it didn't work for me but I think it's because I had a bad reaction to an ingredient in it. I use DermOrganic masque as a DT as well as a LI. It always makes my hair soft and you can get a huge bottle for 20 bucks at TJ Maxx. If you don't mind spending more or having to get something online, I've heard good things about CJ rehab. I've been wanting to try it myself. If your hair is drying out it could be a protein overload. Don't use the suave coconut conditioner since it contains protein. I use Sauve clarifying conditioner as my RO. It has great slip and very cheap. Hope this helps a bit. Good luck :)

Thanks it does help. Where can you get the GVP? Also is suaves clarifying condish cg friendly?

GVPCB (Generic Value Products Conditioning Balm) is at Sally's. All the Suave Naturals conditioners are CG friendly. The only one that contains protein (which coarse hair generally dislikes) is the Tropical Coconut.

Mousses generally have drying alcohols, and the propellants can be drying too. So, it may not be your low poo that was drying your hair out.

Thanks! Just an update. I bought the suave naturals ( I think its the ocean breeze or something) green conditioner for my co-wash and noticed a major difference in one use. I think my hair really just had too much protein. I did also buy the Shea moisture raw Shea retention deep conditioner but I haven't used it yet. Although I am excited that I think I discovered the issue and I can fix it :) thanks again for the help ya'll.

Oh and I also stopped using my mousse again. So that also could of been part of the problem.

Glad your hair is improving!

The Shea Moisture DT is awesome, but it contains algae & avocado oil, which can bother some protein sensitive curlies.

I used it for a long time when first going CG & I couldn't figure out why it moisturized my hair, but still left it frizzy, until I realized algae acted like a protein. My hair likes avocado oil, thankfully.

Having coarse hair doesn't seem to be the norm & lots of products have either proteins or protein analogues. The search for something truly moisturizing & only moisturizing can be quite challenging.

Yeah I did use the treatment for the first time and I did notice that it didn't do to great and my hair was also frizzier than normal after it dried. So I'm not so sure about the Shea moisture one. Gosh hair is complicated. Lol. My hair is almost softer after a co-wash than it was with the deep treatment..but I'll give it a second try. But maybe I have the same problem with the ingredients or something.

I was having the same issues. I was using a LI that had too much protein and my hair got BAD lol. I removed that product and I went back to using my conditioner as LI and what a difference. I usually wash my hair with my no poo or my clarifying conditioner (depending on the day) and then apply my conditioner. I don't rinse it out. I don't really do a DT as often as I should since I'm always in a hurry but with this method it's not really necessary. Just keep experimenting with your hairs protein/moisture balance it takes a bit to find the perfect amount. :)

When my hair got over-proteined, I had to strictly avoid protein for a few months and concentrate on moisture, moisture, moisture. After that my hair recovered pretty well and I could start adding a little protein every so often. I just have to make sure I don't use it more than 2 or 3 times a month. My hair can tolerate keratin protein best and soy 2nd best. I do best with a protein free regimen, but my hair just curls up so great after a light protein treatment that I can't get myself to cut it out completely. I have had the best luck with Jessicurl, Darcy's Botanicals, and Curl Junkie as long as the products I get are the ones without protein. I also love KCCC mixed 50/50 with Aubrey Organics Mandarin Magic moisturizing jelly as my go-to styler. I should also mention that I have to avoid protein, but I do fine with the protein analogues (like Kelp, coconut, wheat germ, etc).
