having trouble refreshing 2nd day hair!

What is your 2nd day refreshing method?

My hair looks fine when I wake up but definitely needs a boost. I spray it down with water to reactivate the products and give it a good scrunch. It looks okay at first but then either falls limp or gets frizzy or both. What should I do? Is my hair just not moisturized enough to start with?
I would say that you are correct, your hair is not moisturized enough to start with.

For me to be able to get second-day hair, I first of all need to use a fair amount of product on wash day. I find that if I don't use enough product, there is not enough product to properly reactivate and hold my hair on day 2. It seems like the product is what gives my hair structure and shape, and without enough, my hair will be very lifeless on day 2.

I also have better results if I spritz my hair at night, before bed. I spritz it a bit, then pineapple. That way my hair does not need as much moisture in the morning.

For refreshing in the morning, I spritz my hair with water and rope scrunch it in, repeating until I feel that my hair is actually starting to get damp and a little limp. Then I stop adding water, and do some regular scrunching. Then I add some clips at the roots for volume and let my hair air dry. I finish with a little hairspray to form an additional barrier against the air, so my hair keeps its moisture longer.

Hmm.. I guess I'll start trying some more things.

I tried for months to follow the CGM exactly but I just couldn't get it to work for me. Cowashing specifically. My hair never stopped feeling greasy and weighed down. I guess I'm doing a modified CGM now. I went back to using shampoo and conditioner (SM fruit fusion line). I'm still debating whether or not it worked for my hair. I want to say it wasn't quite moisturizing enough. The smell is HEAVENLY though. I stopped being able to find it at CVS and Walgreens . I don't like ordering hair products online unless I have to because they almost always come broken and leaking so I've been trying other things in stores. I want to go back to the SM products though. I've been hesitant to try the coconut and hibiscus line because I think it might be too heavy, but I guess it doesn't hurt to try. What other SM products would you recommend? I don't use any leave ins because I felt like those were too heavy too with everything else in my hair. UGH this journey is so hard sometimes! I do use a Moroccan oil that has quite a few silicones which I know is a huge no no, but it was expensive and I refuse to just throw it away, so I'm trying to use it up. Before starting the CGM though it was my absolute favorite hair product so it will be difficult to part with... I guess I'm just too used to my hair feeling a certain way that it's been hard to accept it feeling any other way like it does with products in it.

My current method is as follows. Please help me try to figure out where I'm going wrong! Hair stats: I think it's 2a/2b. Fine but thick. Not sure on porosity.
First I soak my hair with water. Then I wash and condition my hair with Maui Moisture coconut milk. I don't detangle in the shower because it gets tangly no matter how careful I am that it doesn't.
I leave the conditioner in my hair while I do the rest of my shower stuff.
After probably 5-ish minutes the very last thing I do in the shower is rinse my hair.
Then I towel dry and detangle with a wide tooth comb (it's still wet at this point.)
I add some of my moroccan oil because it locks in moisture right?
Then I start adding original Curl Keeper, Curl Keeper Gel, and occasionally a couple squirts of the Curl Keeper Beach Mist (in that order).
Then I scrunch
Then I clip my hair up and run a hair dryer with diffuser over it on the cold setting to boost some of the drying time. I leave it in the clips for as long as I can. Sometimes I take down each section and blow dry with diffuser (on cold) if I'm short on time. I let it air dry as much as possible though.

For sleep I pineapple. In the morning and spray with water until damp and scrunch. It usually always air dries.

Are you using a microfiber towel? That--or a t-shirt--can really help cut down on frizz. You might also try applying your products to sopping wet hair, then plopping and diffusing. It's hard to find products and a routine that provide consistent results. I'm about 3 months in and still can't get 2nd day hair, and I'm tiring of going through my whole routine everyday. Hang in there!

Oh, yes, I do! I use either a T shirt or my microfiber turbie twist.

Is this the Moroccan Oil you use?

Moroccanoil Treatment - Moroccanoil | Sephora

Because it is loaded with cones. So you may need to clarify and try something else.

Yes, it is. I know it has cones in it. I'm almost at the end of the bottle I have. It's too expensive IMO to just throw out so I'm going to finish it. I'm sure that's a big part of my problem. I did stop using it for a while when I first started the CGM. I honestly haven't seen much difference between not using it and using it. Now that I'm mostly doing CGM my hair is tangle prone and frizzy especially on days 2 and 3 which I know means it's dry. I'm still trying to find balance between enough and too much moisture. I haven't quite found that magical cocktail for my hair yet I guess.

Maybe try the "oil" before towel drying to seal in the moisture.

I bought an Argan oil from SM that I got that I plan on trying once the one I'm using runs out. I'm curious to see what my hair does with a non cone oil.

I noticed on your other posts that you will be moving soon. If you haven't moved yet, it may not be worth putting too much effort into figuring this out, since you will soon be dealing with a new climate and new water (harder or softer).

If you have or have not moved yet I almost always point people to my favorite resource:
Science-y Hair Blog

She breaks down a lot of the science behind hair and hair products. How to tell if you need more moisture or protein and product and routine suggestions.

I think my hair falls flat on second/third day due to lack of protein - not moisture, when I spray it with protein treatment it spring back to life. So don't always think moisture, it could be over conditioned.

I agree for the most part. I'm moving to a drier climate though so if my hair is dry now in a hot humid climate it really will be dry there. That's interesting about the protein though. How do I had more protein?

You can look for products with hydrolyzed protein - like wheat or silk. The downside is that you will may invest in more products that don't work.

Try Colorful Neutral Protein Filler - you can get it for a few bucks at Sally Beauty Supply. You can add a few drops to your existing products or dilute it and spray it in your hair

Science-y Hair Blog (from my last post) also has a recipes for protein treatments using gelatin. If you are against using animal products she also has a post about using beer.

Another option - that is not a protein option is an oil pre-poo. I would start with an oil you already have like olive. There are lots of posts & articles on NC about an oil pre-poo.

I never re-wet my hair for the second day. I use a product with enough hold when I wash that it just needs some moisture scrunched in via a cream product. My favorite thing to scrunch in to revive my hair on second/third day is the Coffee Coco Cream Lite. Just a pea-sized amount is usually enough.
2c/3a with 2b underlayer. Fine, porous. Loves protein. But not hydrolized wheat protein. Yuck.
