I'm only into my second week of CG so I don't have longterm experience, but around the end of my first week I also felt my hair was stringy and not looking good. I decided to lo-poo (as opposed to cowashing), use a rinse out conditioner and then a leave in. I liked the results much better. So I plan to lo-poo once a week and cowash the rest of the time. Today I had my best curls yet. Perhaps you can try a lo-poo and see if it helps you too.
