Yes, it does depend on your hair type and how well you take care of your hair in general. I have super thick 3C-4A curls that won't straighten unless the iron is at high heat (400). So, I will go a whole year without flatironing.

However, when I do, I wash the day before with a sulfate-free shampoo, and then use a deep-protein conditioner. I let it air-dry until the next day. I apply huge gobs of a thick silicone heat protectant before flatironing.

The next time I wash, I use a sulfate shampoo, use another deep-protein conditioner, then apply my curl stylers as usual. My curls come bouncing back!
