I had my two hour New Client appointment with Beverly on Saturday morning. I'm very impressed by her, and two hours of cutting and teaching for $80 is a really good deal, if you ask me.
First off, Beverly is the only stylist I've ever been able to have a conversation with. I'm a little socially awkward, a big geek really, so most hair stylists are just so cool that they are in another universe from me. Beverly is so into the science of hair, and life, that we had plenty to talk about. She also rides her bike everywhere, so we had that in common - she even showed me how she puts on her helmet to avoid helmet head.
She confirmed everything I thought about my hair: fine, dense, and low porosity. In fact, I sat down in her chair and one of the first things she said was "Well I can see from here your cuticle is totally closed." Hair guru!
She knew I am trying to grow my hair out, so she didn't chop it all off. She just removed the damage done to my curl pattern by an awful razor/thinning shears encounter in December. My hair looks very much the same length that it used to, but the ringlets on top/waves below has changed to tight, uniform waves all over. Yay!
We talked for a while about products and she was very curious about my routine. We chose to try out JessiCurl products on me... not really a fan, but they aren't awful, I guess. She gave me some samples so I can try at home using my own styling techniques, to see what happens, and she asked for my input so she knows how those products work for me and others with similar hair.
Best of all, she showed me how to clip my hair. I've tried and tried, using picture and YouTube tutorials, and always failed at this. But having her show me and make me do it correctly in the salon was the magic cure - I suddenly totally get it. I haven't clipped my full top layer since the cut, because I find it makes my head look pointier (it's pointy to begin with!), but I clip the sections around my face to aim them the way I want them to lie, and it's a miracle.
So, a great stylist, a great haircut, and a great teacher. Five stars for Beverly Neeland!
