I wonder if someone could educate me a little on some conditioners I bought to try as co washes. I know I should just try them but it would help me if I knew if you thought they were right for me. Products I bought were YTC Pampering conditioner and Giovanni 2Chic Avocado & Olive Oil condit. And I'll tell you I am a PJ but I am ok with that, I have always liked to alternate between products that are working well.

I have 3a hair, coarse but thin hair with dyed ends that appear healthy but since they are dyed, there is obviously some damage. I have used Deva no poo and one c and they are ok, not great. I do like vo5 kiwi lime condition but suave coconut looks dull, coated. One time I tried SM coconut hibiscus poo/condish and it was such a greasy mess, I had to immediately wash with Deva no poo.

Is that enough info to tell me (based on the ingredients) iof the 2 products above are ok for me? I know, just use them but it can sometimes take several uses before I know a product is really bad for me. I am not good with the science part of CG and so many of you guys are

Of those two conditioners, I would think that the Giovanni will work better for you as a cowash. It has three fatty alcohols that will also act as seconday surfactants (foaming ingredients) compared to just one in the YTC. It also has a decent amount of citric acid, which will help reduce mineral buildup if you have hard water. It does have a good amount of Guar Hydroxypropyl Trimonium Chloride in it, which is a cationic conditioning agent that can build up for some (not all). If you use this conditioner and start seeing frizz when wet, that can be a sign of buildup, and you'll want to use a little stronger cleanser to remove it. Some have no issues with cationic conditioning agents, and of the people who do, some can remove with a sulfate free shampoo (low poo), while others require one or even multiple sulfate washes. The Giovanni also has a tiny bit of shea butter in it, which could build up if you're just cowashing, however it acts as an emollient (softener). In that amount and because you have coarse hair, the shea butter might not be problematic for you. Just something to watch.

The YTC conditioner I have heard is a reasonable drugstore dup. for Deva One C. I haven't used either, so can't spek to the accuracy of that assessment, but if you hated One C, you might not like YTC either.

Potential problem ingredients in the YTC are cetyl esters, a waxy ingredient which can build up for some, especially if only co-washing, maris aqua, which is sea water, and guar hydroxypropyl trimonium chloride. Sea water contains salt, which is curl enhancing but can be drying as well. I mentioned the potential issues with the guar hydroxypropyl trimonium chloride above, but you can read more about cationic conditioning agents (and polyquats) here.

All that said, I wouldn't be afraid to try either conditioner. Both are protein free, so ok to use for coarse hair. There are people on CurlTalk who really like both. I'd just try each of them and be alert for any adverse reactions your hair might have. Try to keep the rest of your routine the same while testing your new co-washes, so that if you have a problem on a given day, you won't have to troubleshoot between multiple products.
