Product help!
Hello I am a newbie here and am very excited to find this forum. People dont understand curly hair unless you have it!

I believe I am 3a curly.

I didnt start wearing my hair curly until I was out of highschool. I hated curly hair but I just didnt know how to style it. In the beginning I used your typical mousse then I switched to herbal essance gel. I would use a tube of gel in about a week/ week in a half. If I didnt use a ton of gel to the point it was stiff and crunchy it would frizz out. After using gel for years I found a new product by beyond zone, 3 in 1 scrunch spray. It gives me the stiff crunchy curls. Im starting to realize that my hair really doesnt look good stiff, not to mention Im totally killing my hair! Its so dry!

Im wondering if Ive killed my hair so much with alcohol that it cant be smooth, silky, shiny, and springy.

Ive tried kenya cream product before but the first time I used it I used too much and it looked greasy and weighed down. The second time I used the product I used less and my hair completely frizzed out.

I live in western PA so the summers are very humid. I am looking for a product that can withstand humidity with out frizzing out but can also give me silky bouncy curls.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Welcome! There's tons of info in the forum. The first thing that you should do is determine your hair's properties (texture, porosity, etc.). These properties are much more important than curl pattern for finding the right products. has a ton of info about figuring out hair properties. Once you know that, the easiest place to start is to look at peoples' signatures. Many people will list their hair properties and favorite products. So you can fine people with your same hair properties and get an idea of what works for them.

Okay I think Im more confused now than before.

I believe I am 3a with medium coarse texture and normal porosity.

Ive been looking at peoples signatures and I have NO IDEA what anything means. Im getting really overwhelmed by all this!

I can completely understand how overwhelming the info can be. This link will help with many of the abbreviations that people use on the site:

I promise, in no time at all you'll catch on!

Is there anywhere that explains the differance between all of the products ie butters, gels, mousse, ect. I have no idea what I should even be looking at.

Styling products generally come down to personal preference. For example, I've found gel to be the single best styling product that I can use on days that I cleanse my hair, but I prefer to use mousse to refresh 2nd day hair. This link explains a little bit more:

There was also a recent thread in General Hair along the same lines as your question:

Hopefully these links will give you a good starting point. You might also want to check the normal porosity forum for additional ideas.

It's very confusing when you first join. The most important thing you can do is read, read and read some more. It does get easier. Corrina777 gave you some good suggestion. You can also read the stickies at the top of some of the forums and/or invest in the e-book on the livecurlylivefree website. A lot of information in one place. I never used products until I started lurking on I'm a fast learner, LOL!

While my hair is fine/low porosity, I live outside Philly--so understand your weather fairly well. You may want to look for a poster named redcelticcurls (rcc.) She lives in Pittsburgh and has hair properties that are a little closer, though not identical, to yours. You're probably between the two of us, LOL!

The best thing I can tell you is that it does get easier.
