The Trouble with Being a Natural Bride...
Hi All,

I got married about 2 months ago and believe it or not one of the most stressful things about the entire process was trying to find someone to do my hair. I got married in Wilmington DE and what i have learned is that outside of certain cities...a Natural Hair stylist is an anomaly. I searched high and low and finally my Matron of honor and I decided the night before that we would do my hair. My hair turned out pretty nice actually but it wasn't the look i wanted (if you know what I mean). At the end of the day I am still frustrated with the fact that there are so many salons out there claiming they can do natural hair and really they can't. Not anything beyond a attempting to flat iron it or some twist or locs. I've talked to other natural brides and I've found that typically all have a hard time, but the tighter the texture the worse the time with it. How do we take what is happening in cities like ATL, DC, Houston and other cities with some Natural Options and spread it? That is the question? At the end of the day. My wedding day was awesome; it was the night of my life. I married the man of dreams I didn't even know i had. However when I look at my pictures...I still wonder how that hair could be different.

I am actually interested in what other natural brides have done. I've got a friend getting married and we would like some ideas.

I was wondering if you tried inviting a stylist from a salon out-of-state to come and style your hair? I am thinking it could get expensive with transportation and housing for the stylist, but your day is your day. Have you and your friend thought about this option? Stylist/salons will tell you flat out if they do not travel for events...

ETA: I also think most stylist/salons will style your hair before the event - like a trial run- so you two can agree on changes that need to be made beforehand.

I don't go to stylists but I was at a Mizani natural hair event in NOLA and they brought in several local stylists to do demonstrations using Mizani products. I don't remember the names of the salons. I also met a salon owner from Houston at another hair event in NOLA. Do You naturally Holistic Natural hair salon i think is the name. Really nice lady. We're My cousin is going to some class at some salon but I think it's just for locs. Not sure.

Flying someone in was def not an option from a budget prospective although I considered it several times.

Keep the ideas coming. Ladies

Congrats!! :) Hopefully over time it'll become more widespread because there are a lot of talented stylists out there whether professional, or not. I think youtube has been my biggest help. I'm engaged currently so I'll be a natural bride and luckily I can do my own hair. I love doing updos that I'll post pics of. Even though my hair isn't long, I can put it in a ponytail and then add hair around it, that's all I need. :)

Thanks :) I say even if you can't braid or twist to the scalp that there are always endless variations of the first updo you can put your own twist on it all you're doing is pinning hair in place. Bobbi pins and braiding hair can be your best friend, that's a haistyle for $5 or less and you can reuse the hair :)

twisted or braided faux buns are my go to, you can dress the up with flowers, bows, and other cute hairpins
