I'm Bunnin' It...a grow-out challenge of sorts :)

i'm loving the bunning! i've been at it two weeks now, and my ends have never felt so soft. i have fewer knots. my hair hasn't looked this good since i moved to arizona. in addition to bunning, i'm going to try and stop brushing my hair because i've noticed a lot of breakage at the crown area.
natural since 1998. trying to adapt to this midwest weather while still keeping it simple. current length: MBL (stretched)

My 'before' length is on my fotki.

I'm taking the day off tomorrow for my first henna and just co-washed.
PW: twelve

Scalp Oil: Jojoba, Rosemary, Horsetail, Burdock Root, Aloe Vera Gel
Hairstyle: Protective.

Alright! I want in. I have been wearing low stress styles all week and either do a twist out or a twist and curl on weekends. My hair has been thriving, so this challenge should be good at keeping me motivated.

Plan--Bun during the week and style on week end. Moisturize the ends (loving JC Nourish and Shine) and treating my roots. I'm not sure why but lately they seem drier than my ends. Continue the DTs, multivitamins and drink plenty of water. Start an exercise regimen.

I'll post my starting length when I take down my updo.
Could anyone explain what a "twist out" is?

Also-RCC-I concur about the baby fine hairs sticking out, glad to hear I am not alone
I'm in too. I've been teaching class 5x a week so I've been pulling my hair back often anyway. I'll try to keep this up 'til thanksgiving maybe. That's usually the next time I get my hair straightened and trimmed.

I'm getting it flat-ironed this weekend and I'll take pics for comparison!

Natasha, I love your Piki. Your hair is so pretty.

Well, after my weekend-long twist-n-curl, I'm DTing and bunning it back up today. That Jessicurl WDT kept my ends moisturized for days!!! I never had to add anything to the ends I'm going to use it to keep my bun happy too.

Happy bunning ladies, and don't forget to post your current length.

Hey curlynikki, inspired by your great results with the WDT, I pulled mine out saturday and did a 4 hr long dt mixed with honey, olive oil, and a little Robert Craig condish (my hair has been super dry lately). Great results! i have my hair in a bun, and have only worn it down once in about a week and a half.

Since I couldnt figure out how to post the link to my starting length pic, I just made it my new avatar. Happy bunning ladies!
Super Thick corkscrews and waves. LOVE Elucence MBC, Giovanni 50/50 condish, Qhemet Products, V05 Calming Chamomile Tea Therapy condish, Jessicurl WDT. These are my official HG's that I love oh so much

I'm doing a curlynikki bun today. These things are comfy.

I made a new album and put the current length in that, both wet and dry hair.

Nikki, you are awesome for finding those threads! That is true inspiration for me even though I haven't figured out how to actually put my hair in a bun...Don't think it will look right at my length...I'll figure something out though!

So I stopped into Rickys NYC to buy AOWC cuz for the life of me I cannnot find it anywhere. So a guy there told me no they did not have it.....Then he said " do you have curly hair" I stood looking at him for a good 5 seconds and clueless he tried to sell me some other crap WTF..so my fellow curlies ...please someone check my fotki and let me know if somehow I have transitioned into something else cuz he has to be one crazy a$$ mofo
Thank you FCC and Maria. It's like, the hairline is the most important part of the head and w/o it, it would be hard to do anything. I've been practicing ways to put less stress on my hairline so that it will get better, and I'm making some progress Instead of slicking my hair SO MUCH with that denman brush, I mostly try using my fingers. I tend to overdose with that denman by brushing the crap outta my ponytails/edges to stay down. Come to find out, it actually looks cool using my fingers . Let's see how long this lasts. I will keep trying variations so my hair wont get stuck in a rut. For example, partial ponytails; taking a break from the elastic headbands and using the plastic ones more often; trying the half head wrap thing and putting my hair in an updo (that way I don't have to do anything to my hairline). I will post pics probably in a week or two to show my variation progress.

Your new bun pics are so hot. That bun of yours is HUGE =-O. I am still in shock @ your amazing hair growth. That is amazing. I was lookin' @ the pics last night and got the munchies from the buns cause it reminds me of a huge scoop of chocolate icecream.

OMG, your bun pics remind me of art. Plus your hair color is so darn vibrant. You got skills!!!!!! You should do a video on youtube or something!!!!! =-O

RCC, I'm happy the scrunchy bun is working out for you. I just rinsed out my DT and put on my scrunchy...for me, next to the Southern Tease bun, it's definitely low stress.

thanks for posting those links CN :-) I read the woman's story and it has inspired me. Many times I feel down because I think my hair grows so slow, and I see other women on here who's hair grows much faster and I think there must be somethin wrong with me...Since I've stopped taking birth control pills my hair seems to be doing much better (less shedding, breaking, not as dry).

Last week when I realized I actually could make a bun I did, but then I only wore it for that one day....I had a rough weekend, but needless to say I co-washed today and I'm back on track. As of right now, I am doing the sock bun, but without the sock. I'm using a scrunchi instead to hold my hair, smooth my ends over it into a circle/donut and then put another scrunchi on top to hold my hair in. I haven't really been out to a store to look for satin scrunchis so the ones I have will have to do for now.

At night, the plan is to take my hair out of the bun, section it into 4 sections and moisturize my ends, twist them & pin them up, put on my satin bonnet. In the morning, untwist and put back into a bun.

I'm happy my hair really is long enough to bun, and I can't wait till I get some more length so I can try different types of buns... I think right now, my hair is between 8-9 inches long...
Mostly 4a..crazy hair

Currently using: 100% Aloe Vera Gel , VO5 Conditioners for Co-Washes, Jojoba and Africa's Best Oils, GV Biolage Conditioning Balm , Cream of Nature Detangling Shampoo, ACV rinses, Herbal Tea Rinses (rarely), Alba Botanica Leave-in

Goal: healthy hair and longer hair

hey ladies,
I'm bun queen. I rarely wear my hair out. I am inspired by you all who wear your hair out all the time.

Anyhow, the bun is my friend. and my hair grows like a weed in a bun. I will join this challenge as I just chopped a ton of my hair off. It was past mid back and now touches my shoulders.

I've posted these before but here's my messy bun. I should note that this is done as my hair was reverting from being blown out (curls are usually tighter).

curlynikki or RCC- How do you do the scrunchie bun?

I make a ponytail with a scrunchie. I wrap the scrunchie twice so the ponytail isn't too loose but not too tight.

I then fan out/distribute the hair in a 360 on top of the scrunchie.

If I need it to be extra secure, I'll put a cloth elastic band around the partial bun over the scrunchie. You'll then have a bun with a bunch of hair poking out - depending on your length. The extra hair is then wrapped around the base of the bun and secured with a bobby pin or whatever you use.

I use a scrunchie for the satin. Some make a donut of or rolling up a sock where the toe portion has been cut out.

I've been just wrapping the ends around without using that second elastic. It's more work for my hands, but it stays well enough.

Here's a video tutorial. I just don't do that elastic that the little girl uses before the sock. I want to take it easy on my hair.

ETA: I'm also not that meticulous with the leftover hair at the end. I don't want to take all day...

I use chunky twists to stretch my hair where I want my bun to be. I can use the sock/scrunchie method on wet or dry hair, that just not happening for me. That or I just haven't mastered it yet. Anyway I fold my ends under all around and it forms a bun. Pics r in my album if u want to see what mine ends up looking like.
