The way that I do it is ...
I comb back the top of my hair. I like the front of my hair to be at the side of my head, so I put the comb where I would normally part it if I were parting it on the side.

I take the comb and make a "z" shape repeatedly from the front to the back ... basically you're zig zagging the comb from side to side on the top of your head. You're not doing big z's and try not to do them to spread apart, or it won't work as well .. it may take you a couple of tries to get it the way you want it.

Once I get to the back of my head, I take my other hand to help separate the hair. One hand is on the comb and the other helps split the hair apart. As you lift the comb out you will see the pattern. Sometimes you'll end up with a piece sticking up in the back - I just use the comb and put it to whatever side it should be.

I really like it ... gives you more lift at the top of your head and is great for hiding your roots if you colour/highlight.

Once I have the zig zag done, I normally either scrunch in some gel or scrunch again with the MF towel ... it gives me back the curl pattern that I lost by combing the top of my head.

Hope I'm explaining it clearly ?? !! Maybe someone else can explain it better !
