I also use RR under my gel, and I use HESMU. What I do is apply them to nearly soaking wet hair, right after rinsing out conditioner. Here's my routine:

I smooth everything in rather than raking. Sometimes I add a little Aloeba conditioner to use as a leave in. Then I smooth in RR (sometimes mix with a little CCSS). I have long hair, so I use several applications of RR (as much as I can use at a time, which is not that much because it's rather runny). Then I smooth in the HESMU gel and scrunch. I only put a little of that on the canopy, more on the length.

Then I "plop" it into a shower cap (basically I just pile it on top of my head and put the shower cap over it, which is a trick!) while I tend to other things (only for maybe 10 minutes.) Then I diffuse using a bowl diffuser. I use my method which is modified from Pixiecurl's method: I scrunch it all into the bowl of the diffuser and just hold it like that for up to an hour (I actually lay on my bed and prop the dryer up--beause I'm lazy, of course). It's still not dry when I'm done, but it cuts down on the drying time and makes it more curly.

If your hair type and length are different, your methods and timing will probably need to be adjusted accordingly. Let us know how it turns out!
