Going lighter

I have naturally light hair. I would say dark blonde...(I think, it been awhile!) I have been dying it a dark reddish brown. I have been obsessing over getting it light again. Afraid of the damage. But growing out my roots doesn't seem like a realistic goal.
I heard that if you coat or semi coat your hair with coconut oil prior to dying it prevents damage? Any one tried this before??
If I were you, I only would let do that in a very good salon. And yes, that would be probably quite expensive. Most regular hairdressers can't make such a drastic chance whitout totally run your hair. So, in my opinion the best thing to do is find a really, really good hairdresser (best is to find someone that is specialized in colouring hair), or otherwise let your roots grow out an get your lighter colour after the growing out proces.
highlighted 3a hair. Fine strands, medium to high density. Probably high porosity. Growing uit bad layering and aiming for waist lenght!

Pre-poo: coconut oil

RO + LI: different every time

Yes I am going to go to a salon. There is no way I could attempt this on my own. I'm even willing to do it in phases to minimize the damage.
