Pixie cut?
My hair has really been annoying me lately, frizzy and just overall poofy, I used to get really nice, beautiful curls, but for some reason it just is not cooperating. I am thinking about growing my hair out really long to see if I like it, but as of now I am so fed up with my hair I wanted to cut it mad short and get a pixie cut.

If you cut curly hair short enough will it be straight? or will I have a short curly afro and not a nice pixie cut

If its cut short enough it will look straight, maybe a 2, 3, or 4 on the clippers, but yes it will eventually grow into an afro, but you can straighten it or use a lot of products

Thank you!

My mom and aunt were forced to get pixies when they were younger- HATED them. I got my hair cut short (chin length) and it was more on the wavier side, if I put things in it, I got a fro. Don't recommend it.

I have a friend with super curly hair, and she shaved her head once. When it started to grow back, she ended up with a cute pixie that she totally rocked - it's doable.

The New Pixie!
2 Attachment(s)
Hope I can figure out how to post the old and new looks. I was a Deva girl for years until they jacked up the haircuts about 30% without any warning. I moved out of NYC. I got GRAY. I finally found a WONDERFUL stylist in So Cal and now drive to Upland, CA (the middle of freakin' nowhere!) to see her. With her, we grew a mane of curls, with blonde hilights to hide the gray.

But I suddenly wanted a change. My hair had felt very blah and was just not cooperating. It had to GO!

So here is my new pixie cut! I love it! You have a before and after here. The before is a little strange, because my curls had been twisted and clipped to the top of my head as punishment for a couple of days!

Now I have to figure out how to style it so that I don't get those flyaway curls, which I hate!!

Oh - and the stylist is Lora Johnson - you can find her on FB or at Ricciola in Upland.

Oh my gosh, rbonnet, you are goreous!!

I cut my hair into a pixie around 3 months ago; my hair was damaged, frizzy, and a pain to style, so I chopped it off! I'm a 3a when my hair is long, but when I chopped it off, it turned more wavy. It's easy to brush it straight with some gels, or tousle into a wavy look. Depending on how I style it, it can be casual, funky, romantic... I really think short hair is more versatile than long.

The people on here saying that it'll be a ball of puff are correct... but only if you don't put any product on it! Mine goes a bit afro-tastic if I just let it dry without any product, but that's just what curly hair usually does when not moussed or gelled anyway. The upside is with a pixie, it takes about 5 minutes to style, and you'll use a ton less styling products. Pixies are cheaper, easier to maintain, and absolutely adorable if you take the time to tousle them with some gel every morning. All I do is wet mine, put some aloe vera gel in it, and go. It's awesome! It curls, it waves, and it looks good no matter what!

I love my pixie, and I seriously don't think I'll ever grow my hair long again. I say go for it if you want it, and post pics if you do! ^_^

I'm turning seventeen in a little over a week and as a birthday gift, I'm getting my hair cut. My mom has offered colors or highlights, but I really want a pixie cut. I mean, REALLY. I've been considering it for a while now but my mom thinks I'm being ridiculous("you don't appreciate your hair!")
I think pixie cuts can be classy, sexy, sassy, and just fun! I need this now more than ever.

Bonnie, you are smokin' in your pixie. You've seen my hair - think I could pull it off?

Fanfarlo148 03-06-2010 09:48 PM

Thanks, Annie! And I totally think you could pull off a pixie. I haven't seen your face shape, so I can't recommend any specific cuts, but there's a pixie cut for everyone. It'd be really good for combating the dryness in your hair as well, since less hair=natural oils being spread easier. ^_^

Ooooh I'm getting EXCITED!

Here are some pics..I'm not quite sure if they'll help in determining anything but I'm hoping my face shape works:
(i'm the one with the hat in the above pic)
aaand just for face :glasses2:
(please excuse the acne and lack of makeup haha)

Thanks for the help, honey!!

I love pixie cuts, but if I got one my hair would be STRAIGHT :( and that is NOT what I want. (Why do you think I joined nc?)

So if you wanna get one, get one! They are beautiful, versatile, cool etc. :D

proctorsweetie 03-07-2010 12:19 PM

CurlyPolkaDot - thanks girl! :) I don't really know how my hair will turn out..I'm thinking it'll be wavy-ish? The appointment is for Friday - I guess I won't know until then!

Actually, they're only straight if you brush them, just like long curly hair. If I don't brush mine, it goes wavy/curly and looks really cute. :)

And Annie, you'll look great with a pixie, no doubt! Your face shape/features are really feminine, and short hair would really show them off. I really like this website, since it has soooo many pictures of different cuts:

Some of them are a little out-dated, but it's an overall good place to start on your quest for the perfect cut. There's also this site:

It has info on caring for short hair as well as pictures. Most of them are pretty edgy though, and if you're going for classic, Google Images seems to be the only place to go:

The first few days after it's cut you'll probably be styling it tons of different ways, trying to figure out what you like. YouTube has a bunch of styling videos regarding pixie cuts, which are really helpful. All you have to do is look!

Oh, and you should totes post pictures after you get it cut, Annie! I can't wait to see how you look. ^_^ Good luck!

proctorsweetie 03-07-2010 08:40 PM

Bonnie - thank you thank you, you are always so kind. I've never considered myself feminine-featured so this was a lovely compliment. :)
Now, I want you to be honest. Dead honest. Could it really work? Really work.
I talked to my sisters today and they don't believe that curly hair could ever look good in a pixie cut. It's very discouraging but maybe they're right.

mogirl 03-08-2010 10:06 AM

OH! I love pixies! I got mine cut into a pixie about 3 years ago and loved it. My hair (which is wavy/curly probably 2c/3a to begin with) was so easy to style. My cut was a little shaggy so I guess it wasn't quite a pixie, but with the waves it really looked nice.

The only thing....I moved and I had to change hair dressers. I could not find anyone who understood my hair and I eventually ended up with more or less a buzz cut (which was NOT cute on me).

CurlyPolkaDot 03-08-2010 02:33 PM

Proctorsweetie: You don't need to worry! Curly hair is sooooo versatile that the old myths of 'not good short' and 'can't do anything with it' are very outdated! Believe me! l0l :D

Fanfarlo148 03-08-2010 09:27 PM

You're welcome, Annie! ^_^

I promise you, it really can work!!! Curly hair looks good in a pixie cut; it flips a little at the ends naturally, and it ends up looking really feminine. And if you don't like the way it looks wavy/curly, brushing it straight takes about 5 minutes, and won't damage your hair. Pixie cuts are short enough that you don't have to use heat to straighten them, just gel and a comb.

Every one of my friends and relatives told me that my hair wouldn't look good in a pixie, that I'd look like a pre*****cent boy, etc. They did that so much that I didn't get it cut for around a year, because they scared me so much. Then I finally got up the nerve to get it cut, and they all agreed that it looks better on me than long hair, lol.

In the end, Annie, it's your hair, and you can do whatever you want with it! ^_^

Help! Pixie Dilemma!!
1 Attachment(s)
hi guys! this website is awesome. So my hair is 3a and kind of medium thickness. normally i just put mousse and some leave in conditioner in it and let it air dry. I am dying to get rid of it, its just too much i want less and everywhere i look i see the pixie cut and dream of easier styling. i also just went through an extensive dying process and my natural color is finally in so im hoping whats left after the pixie will be softer and healthier and would like it to have some wave and maybe with a choppy cut?

I want halle berry's pixie but i'm not sure if my hair will look like hers or if she has relaxer in it or straightens it. i put her picture in here hope you can see it. what do you guys think? THANKS!!!:-o

Amda 04-13-2010 05:27 AM

tbranam4128, it looks like Halle's hair has been blow dried at the very least. Given that 3A hair tends to develop a looser curl the shorter it gets, you may be able to attain a similar look , but perhaps not quite as polished.
