using clips
Does anyone use clips while drying to get lift on top? How the heck do you use these things?? I have very fine, thin hair and they won't stay in or they just make the top flat. I don't know how I managed that.
My stylist used clips on me and got great results. I gave up trying to do the technique tonight. I just went back to my normal routine :(

I tried the kinda that they suggest in the CG book for the first time a few weeks ago. I'm not sure if this is how it is supposed to be but this is how I do it - After I wash and put product in, I make sure my head is upside down. I then take the clips, take little chunks of hair near where I want my hair parted/ most volume, and I clip it as close to the scalp as possible. The clips do not lie flat but are rather weird looking...hard to explain..with the side that you squeeze open face towards the front of my head. I usually use about 4. HTH!...Probably not though... :?

hmm.. maybe that's what I did wrong. I didn't put the clips near my scalp. I was putting them a bit higher on the gathered hair. I'll try that next time my head goes into the sink. I didn't pay attention as to how she had the clips positioned. She did have a few problems with a couple of the clips when they slid out but she re-positioned them and they stayed.

I just posted this on another topic.

I never could get the metal clips to work, but my stylist showed me an easier way. I just take two medium-sized claw clips -- about the size to fit comfortably around my thumb -- and clip them along my part. I just leave them in while I diffuse and then take them out. They do add volume at the top of my head, right where I need it, and they are simple to put in and remove.

You can also bend the metal clips so that when you put them in they don't fall over sideways and do nothing. There's a pic in my album of bent clips. Devachan taught me to grab a curl at the root, tug a bit in the opposite direction to get lift and clip right at the root.

Good luck.

The claw clips work nice. I have a real big claw and I just open it on either side of my part and close it near the scalp. It looks funny when I first take it out like there's a peak in the middle but when I scrunch the crunch out of my hair and it fluffs up it looks good.

If you're using the metal ones you need to use them close to the scalp. I clip a curl group right at the roots with the tip that opens pointed to the back of my hair toward the crown.

The claw is easier and makes for better lift for me but the clips keep my curls on top intact all the way to the roots so it's a trade off

thanks -- getting good help here. I have very fine, thinnish hair, would the claws or metal clips be better for that kind of hair?

I think you might have better luck with the claws...I think they are easier to use in any case.

I use claw clips too. I think they're actually butterfly clips. :? I got them from Sally Beauty Supply. They came in either black & white or red, blue, purple & green. I should have bought the black & white set!

Thanks for the pics. Your hair is waaaay thicker than mine. My hair is so thin. I'm going to try tho placing them closer to my scalp and see what happens. If I still can't do it, I'm going to call Ann Marie (my stylist) and have her do my hair again.
I think the claws are going to be too heavy for my hair. I should take pics of my hair when it's wet. It's SOOOO thin.

i have 3b hair that is also on the finer/thinner side. i was having a lot of trouble getting clips to do anything for me. my stylist put some in my hair, doing the exact same thing i did, and of course it worked great! :o he gave me several clips when i left and i noticed they are much "sturdier" than the ones i already had. i don't know how to explain it other than that they have a tighter spring, maybe? and the metal isn't as "flimsy." i'd tried bending the clips i already had and could do so easily. the clips my stylist gave me wouldn't be as easy to bend. i've been using these "better" clips since and have been getting the same results he got at the salon.

all that to say, maybe check out getting some different clips . . . it definitely made the difference for me. in fact, i used them this morning and got great volume/lift :D

I have really good sturdy clips -- I got them from my stylist. I bent them and put them closer to my scalp tonight and they worked just fine. I didn't get as much lift as what she got because I don't think I left them in long enough. I have a Christmas party/dinner tonight and I didn't want to make a total mess out of everything - LOL.
But they did stay in nice and tight this time. Next time I'll put more in and diffuse longer with them in. I think I'll be happy enough.
I'm having issues with the left side of my hair :( I don't know what it's doing. ACK!! The right side is all curly and full of defined curls. The other side, kind of big, fluffy type, almost un-defined. What the hell???
My stylist said that we need to embrace our curls no matter what and just understand that they can be different each day. We talked about cowlicks and she said those can change almost daily too.
But I want PERFECT curly hair!!!

I have the black and white ones, want me to send them to you?

They seem to stick in my hair. Claw clips work better for me.
