hard or soft water? effects on cg?
i think the new place i moved into has either hard or soft water...i dont know how to tell the diff, but i feel like my hair has residue on it, and it doesnt seem like i couod change the shower head (its a really old apt)
what should i do?

If you have real soft limp hair that you can't seem to rinse shampoo or product out of, it's probably soft water.
If your hair is real dry and you can actually clarify that residue off and your shampoo or whatever cleanser rinses out well and you need more product than usual it's probably hard water.

I get buildup easy from the soft water. It seems like on CG nothing rinses out of my hair well.

haha i love that you answer my questions! thanks so much
but i think it might be soft water, it is not effecting my skin at all, but my hair just feels greasy and dirty. i am just not a goof co-washer
is there a goof gentle, maybe sulfate-free shampoo you know of?

We have very hard water and it proved to be troublesome. The minerals built up in my hair and with CG not wanting you to use a clarifying shampoo (any rinses didn't do the trick for me)..well my hair got frizzy, limp and hard feeling after a while if I didn't clarify.

Just to add to medusa...the biggest difference I have w/ my mildly hard water is it takes soap longer to suds up, and my skin gets "squeaky" clean. I get build up of minerals in my hair too, and use Neutrogena's clarifying shampoo once a month 2 remedy the prob. When I had softer water (my hair is much better w/ this) it makes skin and hair more slippery, and much less soap/shampoo is needed. You could buy some ph strips/hard water test kit to see for sure...or anyplace that sells water softeners usually gives them out for free. HTH!=)

I was curious how you could tell the affects of hard water. Thanks Kurlee for your description. I think that must be my problem. My hair looks great for a while, but then suddenly starts to act similarly to yours.

LImp and greasy is how mine gets with co wash, I have to use no poo.
Creme of nature is a good no sulfate shampoo that's under 4 bucks for a big bottle.
Activate makes a good no sulfate shampoo.
No poo and low poo from DevaCurl are good cleansers. I prefer no poo myself but many prefer the other.

Soft water is a trip isn't it?
Hard water wasn't all that fun when I was in the city but at least my suds from my shampoo would rinse out and my conditioner would rinse out. but my hair was def dryer there and less curly so it has it's own set of problems

You can test your water with strips. offers free strips but you can probably get them locally.
