Advice on styling needed!

Hi all! I just joined and I'd like some advice when it comes to my curly hair. I'm not sure exactly what type of hair I have. There are a lot of elements about it that are 3b, but then a lot that are 3c, too (for example, some of my curls are really tight, especially around my face, but the hair by the nape of my neck is really loose, almost wavy).

I have a ton of trouble styling my hair. It's really thick and I can never define each curl. My usual routine is: shower at night, put hair into a bun and sleep on it, rewet it in the morning along with some leave-in conditioner (Infusium 23) to help with the knots, comb it through, and style using John Fried curling mousse and curl spray. After I comb it (my hair looks better with the part on the left, so it's off center), the top always looks flat and then it's just super curly at the bottom. I honestly have no idea where to begin with products. Gels, mousses, shampoos, conditioners, you name it. I'm pretty much clueless.

Also, I was thinking of growing my hair out. Any tips on that?

I'm not sure if I will be any help, but here it goes.

From what I have learned from this site and it's many, many, many threads, It doesn't really matter what "type" of curl you have. What you should first look at is what properties your hair has. Texture, porosity, density, elascticity. Knowing these things can help you better take care of your hair. I'm still learning these things about mine as well.

As for the cut. This can be very important depending on how you want your hair to look (someone has started a thread recently I think about this). I get mine cute in layers (really short layers especially around my crown). The layers help my hair curl better.

Styling. I normally wear my hair curly. I part it to the side and I normally pin my bangs back. They kinda to a swivel and stick up as if they were "poofed" slightly. If I really fix my hair I will run my straightener over a few strands that frame my face and my bangs and I will pin my bangs back (I actually pin then slightly to the side because I think it looks funny if I pin them back in the middle of my head).

I hope this helps!
