Growing hair longer and awkward stages...

I am trying to grow my hair longer and it has been about 4 months since my last haircut. How many months do you wait to get your haircut when you want to grow it longer? Also, how do you make it look good during the awkward stages involved in growing it longer?
I usually go a pretty long time without getting a trim because I have to flat iron my hair to trim it which I don’t do very often anymore. I trimmed my hair in October and that was after 8 months of not trimming. That may not work for everyone; some people may have to trim more often than others but I don’t feel that I do. It is important to trim the ends so they remain healthy and retain growth but you want to make sure you don’t cut too much if you want your hair to be longer. I also have hair cutting shears and I go through my ends and clip the split ends.

I've been wondering the same thing lately! I'm trying to grow my hair out and I'm not lovin' the look I have currently. However, I'm keeping my hair healthy and just last week I gave myself a trim using hair shears braided my hair in sections and trimmed about 1/2". My last haircut was in May, so 5 months ago.

I go about 4-5 months between haircuts. I have bangs, so I usually cut them one to two times myself then go in let the pro's do their thing. In between haircuts and on bad hair days, barrettes are my friends or a bun or ponytail.
