Share How You Found Out What Your Hair Hates

Virginblue: what do you use? I have bad reactions to all of the same things as you. Like word for word. Lol
Silicones: I cannot believe how long I used them ...CG was the best decision I ever made for my low porosity hair.

"Hard" proteins: I got a stringy, tangled mess that became like straw when dried.

Honey: Sticky mess, even when mixed.

Brushes: Even when on wet, condish-saturated hair, any kind of brush (Denman includes) wreaks havoc on my ringlets.

There are a lot of other products which just do nothing, only the worst are posted.
Hair Type: 3c/4a, Coarse, Med-High Density, Med-Low Porosity
Curly since '09
Coconut/Argan oil-breaks me out
Mineral oil-breaks me out
Silicones (even water soluble)-immediate build up
Magnesium Sulfate-dries me out
Hops-matted tangles
Polyquats/Quats/Copolymers-freeze dried hair
Waxes-too heavy, build up
Glycerin-over conditions, must use sparingly in RO's only
Wheat/Soy/Oat/Egg/Vegetable Protein- brittle straw like hair
Aloe Vera-brittle straw like hair, yet appears to work in RO's, still experimenting...

All trial and error, I had to go full cg and limit ingredient combos to even begin to understand this...

LowP: Kinky Curly Come Clean (50% EVOO)
NoP: As I Am CC
RO: Suave Coconut, VO5 Shea Cashmere
LI: KCKT or CJBCLI or HETT/HENOYF (w/ 8 drops GSO)

"To much is given, much is expected"
So many listed are true for me.
Honey, doesn't hold for long and dries me out over the day
Devacurl, I looked like a grease monkey! My blonde hair turned greasy black, like dirty motor oil
aloe vera in the' shampoo', dries out hair and brings on the frizz
any 'oil' for conditioning/softening, curl was all tight ringlets but greasy and crinkly
lavender oil, greasy and lank with sad curls
baking soda or borax--just bad, limp flat, scratchy and rough hair cuticles
ACV-- greasy limp no curl

what did work? Straight liquid castile soap, with a dark beer rinse and for gel to hold curl through out the day, aloe vera gel--lightly. My hair is now consistent (I will probably have to change that as I'm getting RT3 treatment and hormones are out of balance, frustrating for me as this is consistantly working and I now have 2nd day hair)
curlyQ: that's a crazy coincidence lol. I use SM moisture retention shampoo, VO5 kiwi lime as an RO, okra gel made by Botticelli Botanicals with double agave, soy silk protein and a small amount of hemp seed oil and AIF. ATM I'm experimenting a little with using VO5 passion fruit smoothie shampoo (*gasp* sulfates!) with my normal RO and trying just to use the okra gel. I'm a minimalist. I don't know your hair properties, so those might not work the same for you if they are different than mine. What do you use?

I sometimes find out what isn't working for my hair from this board - this thread is an example. Aloe is drying my hair out big time in these super low dews. If I didn't read the OP, I might not have thought about aloe being the culprit.

I tried the Kimmaytube leave-in recipe that so many peeps love. in the winter time anyway, that is a no can do for me. My hair was both dry and a grease slick at the same time. A couple of the CJ products are a no go too since aloe is at the top of the list of ingredients.

Thank goodness for Darcy's cocoa smoothing cream. That is the one product I have that is keeping my hair from dissolving into dry ashes.

RO: CJ Strengthening Conditioner - HG
LI: CK Satin Roots
Styler: CK Coil Jam
Other Likes: Castor Oil; CK Twist Whip, MD CSC
Dislikes: Wheat Protein; Aloe LIs or Stylers

I found out what didn't work for me when I found that one technique or product that really did wonders for my hair that the others were not. Once I found that I decided that what I was using before must not have been working for my hair.

I'd been using 'cones and detergents on my hair my whole life cuz I knew nuthin 'bout reading ingredients (other than mineral oil & petrolatum). I ain't kno nuthin 'bout payin 'tention to my hair's behavior....until this past May.

I had got braids and was askin' people what I should DC with when they come down. Someone told me "Just olive oil." I was so stunned that I went on a Googling/YouTubing spree and learned the truth behind the success of so many black hair care product lines. I decided that my hair wasn't in the greatest shape NEway.....while it felt nice after conditioning, it wasn't really growing....... so why not change up my game and see what it does? I got rid of the 'cones and detergents and I liked what I was seein'.

PS: I had to use improper english cuz this was so serious to me!

I love hearing about people's journeys. Sometimes it's so frustrating just how much work and science goes into taking care of curly hair, but it's comforting to hear that everyone else goes through the same trial and error.
