Best hold, no crunch
So I have 3a/b hair. It's now bob length above shoulders and dyed. Gels make me crunchy and if I leave in too much conditioner for hold it makes it dull. Any good smoothing/defining/curl creams that will give moderate hold and not break the bank? If they smell nice that's a bonus. I don't need much hold really.

I just started using SM's curling soufflé, and love it! Not a ton of hold there, tho, so you might consider putting something like LOOB over it. That can add to the hold but doesn't get too crunchy, in my experience. You could perhaps even just mix the two in your hand and save time, if you prefer.

(I assume you are using this over LI? That helps, too.)

Actually... I'm tempted to try that combo now... Lol!!!

Yeah...I always leave a bit of conditioner in...or put in some leave in conditioner or both. But if I add gel to that I get crunchy wet looking hair. I think I've seen SM stuff at my cvs or Walgreens. I may have to pick some up.

The LOOB is good and really cheap, too!

Question - with your gel, are you not able to SOTC and lose the wet look??

GoddessCurls 01-01-2013 11:18 PM

It depends. I think sometimes it won't scrunch out. Or it still ends up looking wet. Or if I scrunch it too much...there's no hold left.

My hair dresser gave me a bit of pureology real curl cream that was nice..she was trying it out to see if she should carry it in her she asked if I'd be a Guinea pig. I think that may be too pricey for me to rely on tho.

I have similar hair, it sounds like. I've been using something called Three Sisters Curling Gelo (got it at a grocery store called Krogers--not sure where u are!) and Devacurl AnGel. The three sisters isn't too expensive.

When I get out of the shower I scrunch just a little with a t shirt so my hair is still very wet. I flip over & apply the three sisters carefully from root to end, then put some Angel in my hand, rub together & scrunch into the ends. I shake it out and use the t shirt to scrunch more of the wet out.

I end up with light hold, no crunchy! The Devacurl is expensive, but at least this way I'm not using as much as I would otherwise.

Good luck!!

JOICO Joigel (firm). A little goes a loooooong way. It's tauted as a top of the line product and it's the one gel that NEVER gives me crunch but sets my curls firmly but leaves them feeling soft and looking shiny. It's been months and I've barely used a fraction of the 8.5 oz tube.

GoddessCurls 01-03-2013 10:32 AM

Really? Where do u find Joico?

Korkscrew 01-03-2013 03:31 PM

JOICO is a pro line and I haven't seen it at drug stores or Sally's. I just buy mine at various salons and beauty supply shops around me.

Here's an older link from this site where ppl talk about where to buy it. Maybe it's still sold in one of those places (like certain Rite Aid stores)?

If nothing in that link checks out, I'd call a couple local beauty supply shops or local salons and inquire (someone should have it). ... Or maybe just order from Amazon or ebay, etc. :)

I see some on says (medium) tho

Korkscrew 01-05-2013 02:25 AM

Hmmm ... You said you don't need much hold, so it's probably worth buying the medium hold version!

One thing I forgot to tell you though: JOICO products generally contain protein (keratin, at the least). Just something to think about in case you tend to react to that.

GoddessCurls 01-05-2013 10:08 AM

I might try's like $10 on eBay. I've actually be using some stuff with protein and my hair has been tolerating it well. I also picked up some Palmers hair pudding today...never saw it was like $5. It's got coconut's supposed to tame control and elongate curls. Might be just enuff hold for me. We'll see.

Either way, good luck :D
