HELP! my hair has lost its..hold?
I'm not quite sure how to frame this, but my hair has totally lost its "hold". I've been doing headband curls for the past month (similar to a rollerset) and I've had amazing spirals, but this week something changed! I didn't change my products or my routine, but when I take my headband out I dont get shiny, defined curls, instead I end up with a limp, frizzy-ish mess! What gives? I co-wash about twice a week, and since my hair is protein sensitive I avoid protein. I have 3a low porosity hair. I use the following products: Tresemme- naturals condiitoner, vitamin e oil, and pantene silky moisture whip mousse
Can anyone tell me what may be wrong? This undefined frizz is driving me batty!

If your hair is fine, it could be over conditioned.

That happened to me when I would DC but using DT with protein helped. I have fine hair with low porosity

I also have fine hair with low porosity....what would you recommend as a protein treatment?

I used Joico K Pak intense hydrator. I left it on my hair for about 20 minutes with a shower cap. I heated it a little with a blow dryer, then put on a shower cap and a towel to help hold in some of the heat. My hair came out super soft and smelled yummy :)

I also think you're over conditioned! I use EO keratin conditioner as a PT ( EO Products, Keratin Conditioner, Sulfate Free, Coconut & Hibiscus, 8.4 fl oz (250 ml) - ). Spiral Solutions also a promising looking protein treatment!

Okay, so last night I tried a protein treatment with an egg to see if it would make any difference...Well my hair has a tinnyyy bit more definition, but is still rather fluffy. Is it going to take more than one protein treatment in order to restore my hair?

If you have fine hair and you've never done a protein treatment, odds are one egg treatment won't do much. I would highly recommend the Aphogee 2 minute protein treatment. It's less scary than the full aphogee treatment. You can get at Sally's. I also like Nexus Emergencee. It's very intensive and I only use it about once a month. It's pricey, but you can find it in most drugstores.

Since I'm at college i dont really have access to any drugstore products =/
But i have been using conditioner and stylers with wheat protein and silk protein!
i'm still baffled though...its almost like my hair has lost its weight; instead of being bouncy and having "hang" It's fluffy and airy and almost feels like a cloud
Is there anything else I can do to fix this!?

You don't live near any drugstores? I'm in a college town, and we have a couple drugstores within walking distance (like Walgreens carries a lot of good products) plus a Walmart.

If you can get to a grocery store, there's a neat recipe using Knox unflavored gelatin powder that you can try. I've tried it, and it works really well in my hair. Knox unflavored gelatin powder comes in a small box and has like five little individual bags in it. You can find it with the jello and pudding, usually. Also, I've read before that the protein in egg doesn't really help hair very much because it's a large protein. I don't really know much about that though.

ETA: If your Mousse contains mineral oil, you might want to rotate in a clarify shampoo occasionally because that can build up on the hair.

Sorry to bring this up again, but I'm still suffering from the same problem, and I'm at wits end trying to figure it out! After thinking that my hair might be overconditioned I washed with a sulfate shampoo and used the aphogee 2 minute keratin reconstructor treatment. I've also been using only light conditioners with protein (the vo5 ones) and I've used the reconstructing treatment 3 hair is still the same! You know that gel cast hair gets when it dries? Like that crunchy feel? That's what i want! My hair dries incredibly soft and fluffy! Do I just need a stronger hold product?

I've had this happen to me too. Frustrating. The only solution is trial and error. The following products have worked for me in the past: Renpure Organics conditioner in the green bottle with a little more as leave in after rinsing. Followed by BRHG. BRHG is a little costly but you only need a little bit. It's a hard hold gel with silk protein.

Thanks for the recommendations! I was thinking I might need a stronger hold gel, I'll go ahead and give it a try.

The other gel that is awesome (but expensive) is Aquage Molding Mega Gel. Recommended to me by StruttsWife. I buy it at It's full of marine botanicals, which my hair loves. Good luck!!
