GENTLE protein treatment?
I'm looking for a PT that isn't a hard hit of protein, but will help me determine if my hair really hates protein like I thought. I know gelatin is popular, is that gentle? Is it hydrolyzed? Ideally, I'd like a gentle, hydrolyzed wheat PT to help with my damage - any ideas?

Also, I'm going to do a cassia (neutral henna) treatment to help condition my hair. Since henna binds to the protein, I'm wondering if I should do the PT before I cassia? I've read a few of the henna threads- anyone know anything about this specifically? Thanks!

The source of protein itself is not a main variable in terms of potency, what is likely to affect the 'hardcoreness' of it is the exactly how it is processed, concentration, partner ingredients, any heat applied, processing time and your hair type.

You can make the DIY gelatin (yes hydrolysed) treatment as strong or as weak as you like, or you can buy some Colorful neutral protein filler and again make that as strong or as weak as you like. Or you can purchase a everyday type protein conditioner and try leaving that overnight.

Possible penetration enhancers .... I tried layering a drying type protein treatment under a light conditioner containing these ingredients then shower capping instead of leaving to dry. Did seem to stop the straw effect.

Cassia and henna are two different plants, the 'neutral henna' thing is misleading cassia is actually the same thing as senna. AFAIK cassia does not permanently bind to hair, it is temporary. I think it's more of a film former but not certain of that.

Yeah I know cassia isn't henna, but wasn't sure if it worked the same way in terms of protein adhesion. Looks like it shouldn't matter, but I better chelate again first just to be safe since my last one went on unevenly! Thanks for the article- I hadn't seen that one.

I like the idea of a protein conditioner. Any recommendations?

Yes, the homemade gelatin PT is hydrolyzed. I love it. As Firefox said, you can alter the strength of the PT. I suggest you do it, it's cheap and effective.

So to alter the strength, I just dilute the gelatin with more water?

According to the recipe, I believe you don't add the whole packet, in order to alter strength. It states that if you have fine hair (I know that you don't), one should use only about 1/2 of the Knox. I am going to assume that, regardless of fine hair or not, you shouldn't use the whole packet.

It says that: "Use half the gelatin for a milder treatment or for shorter than shoulder-length hair."

I used that recipe today for the first time. I used a whole packet and added a little honey and VO5 condish to the basic formula. I probably left it on about 30 min (using a shower cap and wrapping a warm towel around that.). I liked the results. My hair seems shinier and feels really good. I did follow with a heavier RO than I usually use just in case it dried me out. Other protein treatments have had a drying effect but this was just fine. This is definitely going to be a part of my regular routine.

(Just noticed this is my 100th post - LOL. Who knew I had that much to say about hair?)
