When my roots grow out, I look like I am losing my hair!

Like Tree5Likes

I would like to know what other curlies do ( who color their roots and who have dark hair) when their silver starts to grow in. I really dislike looking like I am losing my hair. I cant think of anything to do except use those hair powders or hair mascara (ugh).
Well I know my mom uses a spray that gets rid of the grey, its at sephora
Myrna, I have this issue, and I have to pull it back for my yoga class and it makes me look like I have a huge issue with a receding hairline. I'll be watching this thread for solutions!

Perri, I'm glad I am not the only one with this issue! Curly, thanks for the heads up!
I have the same problem! Right now I am seriously thinking of not dyeing again and letting it go grey. So frustrated!

My mom's hair is like that too, I think she uses a mascara until she dyes it next. I don't have enough white hairs for this problem yet, but my temples have white hairs so I'll keep an eye out for answers to this thread. It's good to be prepared for the future! I'll probably be gray within the next 5 years anyway (thanks mom and dad!)

They make hair mascaras (as you mentioned), but they also make temporary dyes - maybe that would be helpful? I believe Sally's carries them.

They do make root touch up kits, too. And I know some people opt for a lighter color than their natural, or highlights, etc to help it blend in. :/

Good luck!

Oh! And I hear zig-zag parts help, as well?

Turquoise! Hi. (The daughter who uses Suave Everlasting Sunshine, right?) Oh my I wish I had never started with permanent color, but I know I would really look like an old lady if I was all grey, and growing it out would be a fricken nightmare! Its much easier for light haired gals. Hi, Jaz, I wish I could figure out how not to have a part at all - maybe I will have to work on that with my roller jaw clips. Yea, I guess so. I have those hair powders but I HATE using it! its easy to apply but...ugh!

Wavy, start getting highlights when your hair starts to go silver - if you have a lot of highlights, the silver wont be so noticeable, but, as I said, highlights damage the hair and we get more frizz....
I'm letting mine grow in! I'm sick of dyeing it all the time. I've been graying since my early 20's. I have about 2" grown in so far. It's another reason I did a big chop.

My mom is too, but she's been using this to cover the stripe:

Roux - Roux Fanci-Full Color Styling Mousse #12

Beware, though, it comes off if it rains! It's temporary and lasts until you wash it out.

Chloe, I would have to buy stock in the company. I shampoo every day. Good for you, though, facing down the gray! I just could not bear to have that stripe down my head..the only alternative for me is a head full of highlights.
that is one of the reasons i stopped coloring my hair -- week one it was just a little too dark (if we went lighter, it did not cover the gray and it turned orange), week two was ok, but end of week 2 the roots were showing. i colored every 3 weeks, and even that wasn't enough.
i was never really happy with the way it looked dyed (i always had it professionally done, a few different colorists and always the same). to cover the white they had to go darker, and to prevent it from turning that orange color. i got tired of the time i put into it, the money (altho, not as bad as it could have been as a friend who is a colorist would come to my house, put the dye on, and leave and i'd wash it out).
and now i sit and watch my clients, friends who dye their hair with those roots, and i see them going darker and how it does not look good against their skin, and i just think, i am so glad i finally bit the bullet and stopped! i have never regretted it, always happy that i did.

chloe -- you are at the point of "no return" with 2 inches -- i felt it was a milestone, knew it would keep getting better. i think the first two are the hardest.

Thanks Rbb! Luckily my hair grows very fast. My last color was in early May.

I started to dye my hair when I noticed that my hair colour was looking dull, not realizing that it was grey hairs which made it look that way to me. Fortunately, it turned out horribly (the first time), so I ended up having to go for colour correction, and the hairdresser put in highlights and lowlights, and I didn't try to dye it myself again. After a few months, I discovered the whereabouts of a curly haired stylist I'd gone to years before, and switched stylists. I said something to her about the colour, and she changed my part to the other side, which hadn't gone grey yet. It gave me time to come to my senses. Since then, I've left the colour alone, aside from trying to dye a purple streak.

My mother started dyeing her hair in her forties. An entire hair colour line (Breck) came and went, and she was still dyeing it, thinking she'd stop when her hair had all turned. After over forty years of dyeing her hair, she finally gave it up, and at 90, she still has salt and pepper hair. She was concerned at first that it made her look older, but really, who has their hair dyed salt and pepper? It might be a good way to transition.

Morgan, I am not sure what you are saying; what might be a good way to transition?
Mine starts to look like its receding - then i get this bald looking spot at my scalp at the part. then, if i do the roots too light, it looks like you can see through that area-so frustrating! Oh, and I cant even change the part.its like my hair will just part at that spot!
eamones, I can relate! getting older is a *****.
I'm another with the same issue. If my hair was consistently grey I'd let it go but, even after several years, it is still only grey on the top of my head, with a tiny bit at my temples. It would look hideous if I let it grow in. I've always had very dark hair but over the last 12 months or so I've started dying it a lighter colour, in the hope the grey won't look quite as obvious. I think it's a vain hope but people seem to like the colour (I'm not convinced!) so I think going a bit lighter is at least complimenting my ageing skin-tone a bit better.
My hair is actually thinning on top so the grey being only in that particular area is doubly depressing, as it does make it really difficult to disguise the thin spots with the grey hair.
I'm at a loss.

I've been thinking about this thread a lot, because I see this is getting progressively worse for me, I need to figure something out. I think I'll probably end up highlighting so it's not as obvious but I hate the expense, I color my own hair now. I know I won't be able to manage highlights lol

Perri, lol, I put in call to my stylist about highlights; she says I would need a lot of highlights; or gradually add in a lighter color to my roots; or a high lift color. I will think about this.
Thanks, I was thinking I'd have to lift a lot of color and have the highlights, I actually have no idea how gray I am, but since I started going gray at 18 (and I'm now 43) I'd guess I'm pretty gray. The lady who just gave me my first devacut I'd also a colorist, I think I'll ask her next time I go.
