So, Deva products - seems to be a love it or hate it thing. I myself love the styling foam, and have not found anything like it for my hair, especially on the crown, for volume. I hate their no poo and condition one - yuck. I have never seen a trial size of their low poo - I wonder why? but dont really need a good low poo, there are many good ones out there. Yesterday I purchased a trial size of the Ultra Defining gel, and my hair is still wet but it is really clumping well and feels "different". I will report more later.

So I want to know - what do you love and hate in the Deva line, and why?
I started out on deva trial sized products but I have since moved on to other products. The no poo and one conditioner were fine for my hair. I liked those alright, but they were nothing special. The light defining gel has too much protein for me. I've tried it several times and can't handle it.

Mostly 2b but ranges a-c front to back
Low/med density, coarse, high porosity
Lo poo: SM Coc & Hib Curl & Shine
Cowash: As I Am Coc Cowash
RO: Not using atm
Leave In: As I Am LI
Deep condition: SM Deep Treat Mask
Protein: Hask Keratin
Styler: LA Looks gel
I am not a fan at all. I used them for months and loved them until I got MAJOR polyquat buildup. Now I stay away from them. Unfortunately my hairstylist uses them when she styles my hair, so i wear it for a few days and then clarify and deep condition to remove it.

3a, fine/med strand thickness, high density, low porosity
CG since April 2012
BC October 2012
Cleanser: SheaMoisture Manuka Honey or CJ Daily Fix
RO Conditioner: Mop Top Daily Conditioner
Leave In: KCKT
Stylers: Either Raw Curls Spray Gel, Raw Curls Medium Hold Gel, or MopTop Curly Custard, and always topped with Curlisto Control II Gel
Sealer: Pure Argan Oil
I really liked the One Condition, although I don't use it regularly because of the price (and because I love Shea Moisture more). I like the idea of No Poo but I had bad buildup with it. I really wanted to love the Ultra Defining Gel, but it doesn't seem to have enough hold for my hair and seems to actually make my hair frizz more. So, with the exception of One Condition, my Deva experience was rather meh. I do have to admit, though, that I've never used all 3 together. I've always preferred to mix and match products.
I have had an on again off again relationship with Deva products for years now (I am currently on again). I keep coming back to the line because they work the best at keeping my hair hydrated. DevaCurl products (especially their conditioners) don't really mask what's going on with your hair. For example if your hair is dry and rough feeling the conditioners are not going to make your strands feel moisturized and smooth instantaneously like some conditioners might. Over time they will help you actually improve the condition of your hair but they are not quick fixes. I like this because I always know where my hair stands so to speak. I have used things in the past that make my hair feel really good for several days but don't actually increase the moisture in my strands.

For this reason, in my opinion the best part of the DevaCurl line are the products geared towards care (the cleansers and conditioners). I use the stylers because, apart from being a little neurotic about not mixing products lines, I ADORE the smell.
Hair Stats (CG since 3/31/12)
Type: 3c/b; Density: M; Texture: F-M; Porosity: L-N

Cleanser: DevaCurl Decadence No Poo
Conditioner: DevaCurl Original One Condition
Leave-in: DevaCurl B'Leave-in
Stylers: DevaCurl Volumizing Frizz Free Foam, DevaCurl Beautiful Mess, DevaCurl Flexible Hold Hairspray
Refresher: DevaCurl No Comb Detangling Spray
Finisher: DevaCurl Shine Spray
I like The B'leavein mixed with the Light Defining gel for styling-It's the only product to date that has given me good 2nd and 3rd day hair.
With super fine, wavy hair like mine 2nd day hair is hard to get.
I also like the Low poo, and one condition. I agree with what was said above about improving condition and not masking damage.
I would like to try the volumizing foam but my budget won't allow it right now-need to use up what I have-Also I'd like to try the harder holding gel and the Devacare line.
I'm looking for more curl, body, volume, and shine-a miracle really.
Poos" Nioxin, Devacurl, Jessicurl
Leave in: Ouidad Moisture Lock/B'leavein
Rinse out: VO5 Kiwi Lime, Mane and Tail,Too Shea
Mousse: Oscar Blandi Hair Life, Ouidad Playcurl
Gel: Devacurl Light defining gel
When I first decided to start wearing my hair curly, I purchased a bunch of Deva products along with the Curly Girl Handbook. The only thing that I liked out of everything was the book. The products deliver little to no moisture to my curls. In fact, the more that I used them, I noticed just how severely dried out and and tangly my hair had became, and getting a good looking wash n go with the Deva products was never achievable for me (even though I used the products as recommended and had watched instructional videos too). I came to realize that the Deva line just doesn't agree with my hair at all, plus I'm not really a fan of the scents of the products either. My curls are naturally very dry (due to genetics), and it does better with lines that are able to provide my curls with the adequate amount of moisture that it needs.

Even though the Deva line isn't for me, I am totally glad for all of the curlies that have been able to successfully use products from the line. As, I do think that the Deva line does happen to be a starting point for a lot of individuals, when they start their curly journey. And, it is totally ok to start with the Deva line and get the Curly Girl Handbook to start off with (if you can afford to do so). However, if it's not in ones budget, there are a lot of curl friendly or natural based haircare lines out there that can easily be purchased from off of the ground, whether through ones local drugstores or beauty supply stores instead.

For me, there are just better things , though I *should* give UDG another try. You can get a large bottle for half price at Ulta May 29.
2a medium porous, You can see my wavy tutorials here: and my wavy blog is The Wavy Nation
I love the Light Defining Gel in the summer. I also love the Foam as a refresher. I can't get it to work consistently any other way, but I get great 2nd day hair using it as a refresher.

Hated the No Poo/Low Poo, too much buildup. The deva care line was too heavy. But I LOVE the OneC and gel!! I started with deva curl 4 years back, took some time to explore and now I'm back😉

I actually love the Low-Poo. In fact, it's probably my favorite (HG) shampoo. It's gentle, yet cleansing. I do wish the price was cheaper though! I make it last by alternating it with co-washing for a couple washes, then using it, so it's not too bad.

I can't seem to find the big bottles of it at my Ulta. They carry the big bottles of every other product, including the gels, but not low-poo -_-

The other products I tried (Curl cream, light defining gel) were just okay in my opinion. I actually gave them away to a friend who did really like them.
2c/3a--medium porosity--medium density--medium/coarse

I've used the No Poo on and off for several years and still love it. I used the low poo at one time and also loved it. I like set it free as well.
I recently acquired a sample of the ultra defining gel and I'm impressed. I'm actually thinking of purchasing the large bottle. I'm curious about the styling cream and may order it too.
I can't remember how I felt about the OneC...I tried it a couple years ago.
I slightly remember trying out the Arc Angel and the Angel years ago but I don't think I used them correctly so I sold them.

I think I might buy the "must have" kit which has 3 oz samples of the styling cream and the spray gel as wel as 8 oz bottles of the no poo, OneC and UDG.

I know for some the Deva products don't work but I happen to love them. It seems it's either love or hate.

I really like that they sell liter bottles of most of their products plus I can order from aveyou with a discount. Makes me double happy
No poo and one c are always in my product rotation and I use B'leave in under most gels. I love the foam for refreshing 2nd and 3rd day hair, I use other foams too but I love the smell of the deva one! I use set it free after SOTC on day 1 and I have a huge bottle of Angel and Arcangel that I really should go back to using (I'm kind of loving CJPP and Ouidad CC too much right now!)
Absolute disaster on my coarse hair. My hair is naturally also on the dry side. I might re-visit at some time in the future with my own styling (only experience with them was with the DevaCut), but at that price tag, who knows when that'll be.
