When to deep condition?

This is one of those things I feel like I should know already, but regrettably I'm still a little confused.

At first I used to shampoo, then deep condition, then condition. But then I was leaving the deep conditioner in, so I switched it up. My next routine was shampoo, deep condition, shampoo, condition. But then that was too much shampooing, so I ended up where I am now: deep condition (with the weekly product still in), then shampoo, then condition. Now I'm wondering if having my deep conditioner in with all of those products is affecting my results.

Am I overthinking this? What's the best method? Or is mine fine as it is?

Only your hair can tell you which method is best. Is your hair still dry when you're all done? Most people deep conditioner after shampooing because for most it works best on clean hair. I don't think you need to shampoo, dc, and then shampoo again.

If you want to know whether or not the DC is working, try skipping it next wash or do it after shampooing. If your hair is dry then you'll have your answer.

We need to know more about your hair. Does it feel dry or limp? What is the main issue that is bothering you? Do you ever use protein? Have you tried using a sulfate shampoo to make sure everything is clean and that you have absolutely no buildup and then used a deep condition? How long have you kept it on and what is the result?

Many questions, I realize but I'm not getting the clear picture. As a general rule, most people shampoo, then deep condition. They leave the deep conditioner on for 1/2 hour to an hour and then rinse out. They may use a light leave in conditioner or not if their hair is well moisturized already from the d. c. Some people routinely use a deep conditioner instead of a regular conditioner.

Also check out the ice-queen method in the general section for an interesting use of conditioner that promotes "clumps."

When my hair has been a disaster, I've slept (with a towel on my pillow) and a deep conditioner overnight. It has restored my hair.

I hope all this helps and I haven't confused you more. Please post back and let us know how your curls are responding.

I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....

@Curlista93,

I skipped my DC last week, so this was a perfect test time! My hair was dry and fairly limp last week even after a good cleansing without my DC.

@curlypearl,

My curls were unusually limp, and very dry. I have high porosity hair, so I figured moisture was the issue!

So I cleansed and then applied the DC, and rinsed it out, and my hair looks fabulous! I used the SheaMoisture JBCO hair masque and I am in love. My curls looked good even without product (although I had applied the masque last night and after rinsing, wrapped it in a tee to sleep on, so this morning it was a little wild and I definitely used a leave-in).

I definitely got my answer: cleanse, then DC and just rinse it out. I think my issue was that the last DC I used did not rinse out well at all and lingered, which messed up my wash day results. But this one rinses out very well, so perhaps the other had some cones I had missed!
