Waves all of a sudden not behaving right

I don't know what is going on. But all of a sudden over the last couple of months, my waves have been not acting right. Or normal. Or whatever. There really is no normal but anyways yeah, something is not right.

I hit a really good stride over the winter and had pretty decent waves that didn't really frizz. But lately, they just don't do what they used to. The wave is flatter, there's all kinds of crown frizz that I can tell is not new growth, there some clumps that are refusing to wave at all which isn't normal, and I'm shedding quite a bit. I cant get any root lift anymore. It frizzes very easy now and the clumps come all apart with ease. I am having trouble detangling longer hair. Plus it is problematic for me to apply product with longer hair than i am used to because if I apply upside down, the clumps get ruined going back to right side up, and I dont get crown distrubution that way (could cause the frizz). But it I apply product right side up, I dont get any root volume whatsoever from the ears down even with clipping and diffusing upside down (and still getting frizz after drying). I don't know what to do. I clarify, I trimmed, I sleep in a pineapple and use the satin pillow case, all the things i am supposed to be doing.

These things all have changed since the beginning of the year:
1. My hair is getting longer, so that's one thing. Of course not just in the last 3 months but I have actually taken notice that it feels "longish" now instead of "medium".
2. I ran out of my Camille Rose Curl Maker in January (was a holy grail), and maybe my new bottle is from a messed up batch or something because I could almost say I got the new bottle right when all this started. It smells way more grapefruity than the last bottle, did they change formulas?
3. I just changed out my chlorine shower filter, so maybe a spent cartridge has caused this, but it didnt look spent on the indicator so I dont really know if it was spent or not, but my hair hasn't really improved with the new one, leading me to do more research on chlorine in my city water (which has opened up a whole new rabbit hole that I think is going to make me switch to a vitamin C filter).
4. I got a haircut in January probably but it was just a trim and we didnt do anything too dramatic with layers than had already been done.
5. The season has now changed and our weather is warming up to pretty much being high 60s to low 80s every day but we havent had too much rain or high dews yet.
6. I started trying As I Am Cond Cowash that everyone raves about. I started trying Shea Moisture Coco and Hib shampoo that everyone raves about but only use that every couple of weeks and that was a more recent change but maybe it is too much protein?
7. I purchased a new Kinky Curly Knot Today that everyone raves about that I had used in the past and liked, but its not working like it did in the past either.
8. I tried a mousse instead of that Curl Maker that I feel isnt working but just got quat build up so I had to clarify that all out with a hard water shampoo and threw away the mousse haha.
9. I tried to change back to my old diffuser from the Orchid one because my old one dried my roots faster, and since Im getting longer, I cant take all morning diffusing, I have to leave for work at 6:15am.
10. I went to a microfiber Deva towel since Christmas but hated it so I've gone back to drying with a tshirt
11. Tried yto start squish to condish to solve this but all that does is cause alot of shedding and I even try to squish gently but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Maybe all the routines and products I have tried to reincorporate or try for the first time just do not work on my hair? The only thing that seems to have made a difference is the old Tresemme Naturals formula, I found a bottle under the sink over the winter. But all of these things combined could be the problem too. I just dont know! What do I do!?

Generally, when I'm shedding a lot, that means I need more protein. Do you have any conditioners heavy on the protein? The SM Coco and Hibiscus has silk protein, but I would try something with other proteins as well so that you are getting a combo of proteins.

When you clarified, did you clarify twice, once with a sulfate and once with a poo containing C14-16 olefin sulfonate? Sometimes I have to clarify with two poos because one doesn't remove everything.
Low poo: Intelligent Nutrients (IN) Harmonic; Oribe Cleansing Creme
RO: IN Harmonic
LI: As I Am; CJ Beauticurls; Jessicurl (JC) Gelebration Spray
Stylers: JC Confident Coils; IN Volumizing Spray; IN Perfect Hold Hairspray; John Masters Sea Mist; Bumble Bb. Gel
Normal- to low-porosity 2a/b baby-fine hair

Hmm no I did not clarify twice, but I will make sure to do that on my next wash day. I also tend to not fare well on protein, my hair is pretty coarse. But I have some Hask conditioning packs that have protein, so that is another thing I'll try to see if it makes a difference.

I would advice you to start over again. Give your hair a break from all the styling tricks and products. Clarify one more time and then use less products try not mix them or layer too much and observe what happens.
Another thing you could try is to do an oil treatment with coconut oil once or twice a week to start then once every two weeks, and then once a month. Coconut oil stopped my shedding and reduced the frizz. For the shading you could take Vit E orally or break the capsule and put the oil on your hair.

If you clarified with one of the two types of poo I mentioned, you wouldn't have to clarify with both types, just the one you didn't use. Does that make sense?

Hmm, I have very fine hair that is not coarse, so I don't know what will happen for you with the protein. Be careful...

My hair is normal but more to the coarse side on my ends and protein treatments and or products with protein were recommended(as well for my normal mid hair).

Choose smaller proteins (any amino acids, any peptides or hydrolyzed: silk, keratin, collagen) if you're new to protein or have coarse hair. Larger proteins (oat, wheat, soy, vegetable, quinoa) tend to work well for fine and medium hair and even coarse hair occasionally.

Ttoosday, do you have any SM curl enhancing smoothie lying around? That product has silk protein in it and might be a good one to test out. I find that it makes my hair very soft and defines the curls well. I doubt that it would cause a problem for coarse hair. In fact, the label says it is for thick hair. It is kind of heavy, though, so use just a little bit (maybe pea-sized).

As Goosefootprints suggests start with a SMALL hydrolyzed protein like keratin or collagen. I'm not sure silk protein is small or medium to large.
Silk is one of the small proteins.

How much or what protein I don't know but the protein in Deva seems to work and the once a week JM treatment you suggested.
I will give the protein in the SM Coc and Hib some more time before I toss that out. I usually don't have good reactions to protein, I get hair that is stiff and rough feeling. The silk in that shampoo is hydrolized, so if I remember right, that puts it on the smaller end of the protein spectrum. But it is also way up in the ingredient list, like in the top 5. So I'll leave it a little while longer and see if it makes a difference. I just had to do a dye since my skunk streak was showing so there's always a few days recovery from that plus the creams in the dye products and conditioners have protein. And silicone that will have to be washed out next wash day.

Maybe I was using way too much KCKT. Maybe I need to stick with a creamy leave in instead of the KCKT altogether. I dunno I'm still thinking about it all.

I think i had a little bit better result today. I clarified with a sulfate shampoo. I realized what the poster said earlier was probably true, I needed to use a sulfate instead of just the c14-16 olefin. However, I am still not quite back to normal.

I backed off of the KCKT a little and used a smaller amount. I switched back to my black orchid diffuser and went back to using high heat on low power. I had been trying medium heat low power and it just doesn't dry my hair enough. Then I'm going around with hair that is too damp for too long and I think that is not going to work for me. I also tried the smasters method with a tiny bit of gel... the smasters method can easily destroy my waves so I have to be very careful with that.

I'm frizzier than usual, shedding more than usual, and flatter than usual. Maybe its just the length that I'm gaining flattening me out, and maybe I'm using too little product now, causing me to not get good distribution. So maybe a combination of amount of product and technique of application for longer hair that I am not used to. Upside down versus right side up? Transitioning between upside and right side seems to be tricky.

What I've recently been trying is a way of diffusing that I saw in a JessiCurl video (sorry, can't remember which video). After you scrunch your products in with your head upside down, you diffuse that way (head upside down) without turning the head right-side up, until you're done diffusing. That made some front pieces wonky for me, so after I scrunch in my products, I clip the two sides of my part and clip the front pieces to the side, but I don't worry about fixing anything else. So my hair will be smashed down in some places and there will be bald spots, etc. After clipping, I turn my head upside down again and then diffuse. I've done this three times now and have been happy with the results.
