Newbie Questions

Hi I love this site and of course have some questions. I have Sara Jessica Parker hair circa 1999 season 4. I want to know what to do with it. Curls in the back but straight up front and a straight layer underneath! I have highlights that I get done twice a year and shoulder length hair (I cut it short because I have now idea how to deal with it). I straighten it with a hairdryer but itís hard to get all the wave out in the back so I tend to just keep it up in a clip. Please help I want to have long touchable curly hair all day not hay hair!! Thank you so much!!
Well, touchable hair and curly hair usually don't go hand and hand sadly, but only because it causes frizz, not because it's dry! The first thing you probably need to do is get it healty and moisturized. Are you doing any deep treatments and CO washing instead of using sulfates?

I just got that Pantein restoritive DC and tried it it mad my hair softerbut it's still kind of fried looking. I'm getting the CG book this weekend. I"m a new CG and no one in my family or friends has curly hair so now help. All i have it the internet and magazines. Help!! I was thing of getting CK and trying it out. Can you guys reccomend something for a newbie? Thanks for all your help. I hink i'm a 2B or 2C.
Getting the book is a great idea. It has many easy homemade recipes and will help you figure out what your hair is really like! You'll find everybody has very different hair and no one products works for everybody or the same for two different people. Have you considered you may need to trim your ends? If they are dry and split, getting rid of them will make a world of difference.
Now, to really complicate things - you may need to find someone who cuts curly hair- as it should be cut very differently that straight hair is cut. That is something that most of us curlies find out - the hard way. If you go to the upper tool bar and click on CurlSalons, it will get you to reviews of curly cutters and stylists.

Some general advice that applies to most people:
Use a satin pillowcase to sleep on
Don't use a standard cotton towel to dry your hair
Apply product to soaking wet hair
Don't brush your hair - finger rake it at most
Learn to plop, even if its for 3 minutes to soak up some wetness
Use a diffuser if you blow dry- slow and low - take your time
Get rid of the sulfates (or at least the harsh ones)
Do a lemon rinse or acv rinse (when all else fails )

Thats just a few things that can make a world of difference no matter what gel or leave in, etc your using!

It takes time to improve YEARS of abuse to our hair. I bet it takes most of us a good month before we know it's all worth it and see great improvement.

Your so helpful thank you!! I'm picking up the book tomorrow!! Some of the ideas i'm hearing are just shampoo!!! My ahir tends to get greasy after one day of washing and second day hair just doesn't happen for me when i let it go curly. But i will try what ever the book says because just in case i want to try out my curly side!
We've all been where you are right now. I thought the idea of no shampoo was completely crazy - and maybe it is, but it sure does work for so many of us!! There are people who haven't touched a drop of poo in YEARS and they have the most beautiful healthy hair. But again, everyone is different. First identify your hair type, and then you can start focusing on people on the boards with similar hair and try their routines until you find the one that works for you.
Read the book and have a ball.

The book will help me figure all that out right?
It's been a couple years since I read it, but if I remember correctly - it will, by description, example and some pictures. You will finish the book with a great base of knowledge and the desire to soak up every ounce of knowledge you can find/read- here, there and everywhere!! Plan to be obsessed
