Did your hair go curly at puberty?

Like Tree3Likes

I was straight up bald until I was 2. People used to ask my mom what was wrong with me (I also had saucer eyes and a square head so...). But then my hair grew in super blond and wavy.

By the time I was in kindergarten, it was more of a dishwater blond and my parents decided that I should always have some sort of dorky short hair cut so I had no idea what kind of texture I had.

4th grade, I let my hair grow out and it was really wavy and frizzy. But then again, I was brushing it all day long so it could have been curly and I never would have known.

5th grade my hair was disgusting. 3c curls getting brushed out every day. I didn't even know my hair was curly. I just thought I had horrible hair. My dad made me get a spiral perm to "train" my hair. But no one ever said to stop using a brush on my curls.

6th grade I finally figured it out on my own- never brush my curls and conditioner works great as a styler. And voila! 3b/c curls!

Curly from birth 'til present (33 years old). My curls never changed but my hair color did. Blonde until I was 10 and brown until 21 and now brown and grey.

I'm so amazed that there is a whole thread full of people with similar experiences. Everyone I've ever mentioned it to has looked at me like I was crazy.

My hair was stick straight until about 12 or so, and than it seemed like I woke up one morning with a head full of curls.
I'm still a newbie and poking around and trying new products, but as of right now this is working for me:
Co-wash: Sauve Naturals Coconut
Rinse out: L'Oreal Vive Pro Nutrigloss Conditioner or Biolage Hydrating Conditioning Balm
Leave in: Sauve Naturals Coconut
Stylers: LA Looks Sport Gel and KCCC

Trying to step away from the blow dryer and air dry.
I think i had straight hair until i was about four. i got really sick and malnurished and alot of my hair fell out and grew back curly. but i dont really know what it looked like because my mom always brushed it out and blowdried it so it was like a bowlcut that musta been three feet wide
Yes. My mother has straight hair and my dad, super curly coarse hair. My hair was very straight until my 10th grade year. It was confusing because after blow drying my hair, it would be fluffy and sort of frizzy when it used to be silky and shiny. So I had awful hair through high school because I didn't know what to other than what I'd always done. The first part that turned curly was the hair around my face, particularly near the center of my forehead. I hated it so much I used to trim those hairs very short. <Yes, it looked as bad as you're probably imagining!>
I ended up with tons of split ends when I got my first straightener my senior year. It was metal and very damaging so I had hundreds of dry, split ends. Then I discovered the ceramic irons and straightened my hair daily for the next several years and feared rain and humidity every day. Now, and for the past two years, I wear it curly almost every day. I maybe straighten once every few months. But its great because my hair is so much healthier and I don't fear any kind of weather; plus, it is different. Most women I see straighten so it's quite rare to have hair like mine. So really, I'm glad my hair changed even though it took me years to get where I am now.

Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.
Hear that crash? It's me falling off the CG wagon.
My hair was barely wavy when I was a child and got 3a/b-ish when I was a teenager. Stayed that way ever since.
I don't remember if I have posted in this thread or not, but anyhow...

I've always had curly hair. I had 3a hair until about 3rd grade I think, then it turned to about 2a, then 3a again... but now my hair is 2c, only because I've damaged it SO much, so it's really meant to be 3a... (Excessively dying & straightening it) But I had very long, golden blonde, 3a hair. (Wish I never dyed it or straightened it... ) But once I hit puberty my hair turned mousy brown. But yeah, it's always been curly though.

Currently trying out the CG method again as of 1/3/12!

Current Routine:
Co-wash/RO: Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle
Low poo: Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat (when needed)
Products: LA Looks Sports Gel and Curly Kinks Coil Jam

I had very light blonde, slightly wavy hair when I was a kid. Around 10 or 11 (I went through puberty early) I started going curly, and my hair got darker. I ended up with light brown/red 3b hair... though it's getting some silver in it now!

I was born with perfectly straight and soft "Asian" hair and it stayed that way until 5th grade. From 6th-9th grade, it was increasingly wavy with little curls winging out near the front, and now (10th grade) I have loose ringlets.

I had waves/ringlets as a toddler, straight as a child, then puberty gave me the 3a curls and 2b waves that . . . I desperately wanted to straighten as a teenager.

I am giving away my age, but I desperately wanted the straight hair and straight-across bangs of Shannen Doherty from the original 90210 . . . It was never to be, though. Not until I was 19 or so did a hair dresser tell me I had curly (not just frizzy) hair and actually know how to make my curls look good--gel plus Aveda Humectant pomade, and Houston humidity did the rest. I still love the straight-across bangs on other people, but I accept and love my curls now, too.

Yay for getting older and accepting yourself!
2b/3a, fine, "naturally frizzy", non-porous, above shoulders, brunette
Low-poos--faves are Deva and JC, experimenting with CJ Gentle Cleansing Shampoo
Conditioners: faves are Devacare One-C, Jessicurl Too Shea
Leave Ins: Conflicted relationship--no fave
Fave stylers: Aveda Flax Seed & Aloe over Aveda Phmollient mousse, KCCC over anything, Biolage Firm Hold Gelee (HG for spring/summer), CK

I had barely-2A hair when I was a kid. Short, it would stick straight up over my head. Just the other day my mother, reading my LiveJournal, admitted that she was glad my hair didn't get curly until later because she would have had no idea how to care for it. She has what she lovingly refers to as "Liza Minnelli straight" hair.

My hair started getting wavy-er and frizzier around 10. Puberty hit and it went FWOOMF. Mostly frizz, more than curl. It was really thick in college and then in my late 20s my body changed again - I started getting migraines, acid reflux ... and my hair thinned. With the thinning came more curl-like curls though.

Now, facing 40 next month, I'm curious to see what changes my hair will take in the next 10 years. It's ... facinating and hey - at least it's always different!
"when I sleep, my curls crush flat, like a slinky that's slopped sideways"
Gone 'girly. Last 'poo 10/18/08
Current experiment is Co-Wash and Condition: V05 kiwi lime clarifying conditioner
Then KBB super silky, KCCC, then L'Oreal Melting Gel with a bit of GF Super Stiff mixed in.
Pre-toweling, post-toweling, pre-plop and post-plop. The jury is not out on the plopping thing. I think my hair is too fine.
fine / non-porous / thin aka 3"abba" / oh so Fine / just barely ii
Wow I am amazed at finding this thread, until now I thought it was quite unusual for this to happen! I had ever so slightly wavy white-blonde hair as a child that slowly got darker and went extremely frizzy when I was about 9 or 10 (I hit puberty quite early). Now I have 3b ringlets that are light brown with the occasional blonde streak. I hated my hair from 9 to when I was about 15 when I finally realised that blow-drying was not the way forward (understandably during that time it was a frizzy, damaged mess!). Embracing my curls was the best decision ever
Nope. I always had curly hair.
*sighs* Looking at pictures from when I was 4, 5 and 6 my hair was so much curlier. The only reason I can guess as to why it wasn't a big brushed out looking mess is because, according to my mom, I liked baths, but hated being washed. So my hair wasn't shampooed very much and I also hated my hair being brushed.
I actually found one picture where my hair was solid 3a/3b.
Cleanser: Liquid Castile Soap diluted in a foaming soap dispenser
ACV rinse
Oyin Handmade Greg Juice or Juices and Berries
Stylers: Botticelli Botanicals Styling Mudd, KCCC, Honey Rinses and BRHG, Crack Leave-in Hair Cream when straightening

Tools: Silk pillowcase, Floursack towels, Jersey T-Shirts, Wide Tooth Comb, Velecta Paramount TGR-VQX Hair Dryer (for when I straighten) and BaByliss PRO Ionic Rollabout Hard Hat Dryer

Mine was always curly but got a lot "curlier" at puberty and that explains if it's hormonal why I lost curl after Ms. menopause hit. It's still here though, thankfully.
I pretty much always had curly hair even though my mom brushed into two pigtails! It was more wavy as a baby and got curlier as I got older. Then in my thirties it got looser for some reason. Which was great cuz now I have way less frizz!!

When I was a baby I had big fat ringlets. I lost all of them by the time I was 10 and my hair was straight with barely any wave. I didn't start to go wavy again until I turned about 23. That's why this place is so helpful to me -- I have no idea what I'm doing.
CG since 6/15/09 -- fine/medium texture, medium porosity

Conditioners: GTTTT, Kenra & KCKT
DT: CJ Hibiscus Banana Deep Fix
Styling: KCCC, KCHP, HEBE, Loma Imply

I've always had curly hair since birth, but when puberty hit it got much curlier. It was more wavy if I brushed it out, (which I normally did) but by the time I was 11 I got some 3b curls near my neck, and then I knew there was no fighting it anymore.
Teenage curly with 3a-3b course curls
Shampoo: DCLP
Rinse Out: GVP conditioning balm in winter. Devacurl One Condition in Summer

Am I the only weird one who was a 1 until nearly 30? A 2A until the last year or two?

Will I be a 4 at age 80? Cool!
2B low porosity low elasticity fine texture
I'm not CG - tried it and failed for two years. My scalp hates it.
