I'm such A Curl-tastrophe...

Okay... sorry this is repetitive, but loloDSM suggested I post on this board as opposed to the newbie board so I could get some advice...

My very fine, incredibly thin, I think mostly 3a (but used to be TOTALLY 3b before I killed it) hair is not responding well to what I've tried so far... And the front/top (canopy?) has so much breakage from that, that I've had to cut more than I wanted off of it

I've co-washed the last 2 days, and I know it's not recommended that you wash daily, but I can't go more than one day unless it's a weekend. I have a very oily/sweaty scalp from the gym after work and by the time I get out of there... my hair is drenched in sweat and smelly!

I bought some Biotera Curl Creme yesterday and used it this morning. My hair was really soft, but I think I may have used too much or something because it looked dull and dirty... like I hadn't cleaned it. It was also a little heavy. I'm not used to actually living the CURLY life, so I'm totally product spastic! I have NO idea what to use to achieve what I want and even less of a clue how much I need.

My ends are parched, so badly that the last 1 - 2 inches are almost straight now because of heat styling damage... but my roots and up to that last 2 inches is looking SOOOOO much better now that I'm not straightening. There is curl all the way to the root!!!

I don't have long enough hair to plop, I end up looking weird and it pulls my curls out of the back, but I think if I could get the hang of clipping it might be a great way for me to get the volume I want on top!!! I watched a few videos, but I can't for the LIFE of me get it to work... any suggestions??

My goal: (aka... delusions of a curly headed PJ freako) less frizz... more volume... better curl definition and longer curl hold.

(When I say thin hair... think one square inch of scalp less than half filled with hair... alllll over my head.)

Ok I feel like a rambling idiot... but you all have such beautiful hair from the methods you've chosen and I'm desperately hoping someone here will be able to help me finally feel like I have hair worth smiling about again...

Thanks in advance... for this advice and all the other stuff you all have posted... it really gives a girl some hope!!

Hi i could of written your question. it sounds like we have the same hair.except i made the mistake of getting it relaxed in december so now im a barely 2b. the curl is starting to come back and since ive been using aphogee i dont have near the damage.i really want my 3a, 3b curls back. i also had a lot of damage cut off the sides so they are way to short.it is going to be a long summer.
anyway when i had my curls i had the best luck with tigi bed head curl cream and booster(curls rock). it gave me definition, volume, my hair wasnt dry, just bouncy tight beautiful curls. and i diffused upside down. the top got a little weird so you just kind of spray a little more booster or wet your hands and scrunch again to fix the top. i couldnt air dry because i had no definition and volume. sorry i cant be of more help. i had to respond because it sounded like i could of asked the question your photo could of been me(before the relaxer) right down to the color. sam
Don't know how long your hair is; but perhaps cutting off the dead ends would make things look much nicer? Don't give us on CG you will find something special for your hair and you will love it. Try turning upside down to scrunch etc to give some definition, then using clips to heighten the top. Good luck - let us know your journey to great hair

Hey, I was just talking with LoloDSM yesterday. I looked at your sigi and I looked at the ingredients for the poo and conditioner that you are using. I seriously think that SAMY is contributing your to dry hair. I also remember looking at them in the store the other day and putting them back immediately, especially the shampoo. And the conditioner has silicone in it. I don't know if you are trying to go CG or not. I recently tried Cream of Nature Regular shampoo (from Sally Beauty $5/bottle). Xcptnl recommended it to me. It does not dry my hair at all, she says she doesn't need to condition with it, but I do...my hair is dry, too!! I also use the Biolage Conditioning Balm (or a knock off version), it will definitely remain one of my go to products. At the very least, try the Conditioning Balm...Walgreens has a knockoff in their Bio brand, it was on sale earlier this week. Someone else said it was comparable to AOHR.

You'll have to use the SAMY when you use your noodlehead to get it silicones off.
Currently, using JC HCC, Too Shea, CK and CCSS, RR or LOOB or MOP-C.
CK is the one!!

as of 6/17/10 - I have to add Joico!

We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull, some have weird names and each is a different color. But they all have to learn how to live in the same box. ~Anonymous

Hey, I responded to another post you put up. Ignore the MOP C curl cream suggestion, as I think that might be too heavy for your hair, now that I'm reading this post. The Biotera curl cream might still work, just put less of it in your hair.
I would recommend getting a trim for the 1-2 inches of fried ends. There's nothing that will cure them. Cones might make them look better in the short run but it'll still be fried.
I would recommend stop using NoodleHead. It's a great curl cream, don't get me wrong. But it seems like you need to start being more gentle with your hair.
Use a gentler shampoo and conditioner, use a leave-in, and very little styling product (or none if you're not going anywhere or don't care about looking good) for awhile and see how that goes.
That's right, I said it! I wear scrunchies!!

I am a sulfate washing, cone slabbing, curly lovin' s.o.b. The CG police haven't caught me yet.

I got some Suave Coconut conditioner yesterday, as I've noticed several people here are using it as a cowash &/or leave-in. I'm worried about using anything as a leave in because my hair is so flat on top and oily looking at the roots... I guess I could use it and just rinse MOST out and not put extra in when I get out of the shower.

I'll definately be hitting Sally's to find the Cream of Nature Shampoo, and I'm gonna try and find the knock off bio conditioning balm.

Is the CRCC/CRCB a good combo for me? Gels usually don't do well for me, I've been trying to use cremes.

I'm sooooo confused!!!!

Thanks everyone who is responding!

HI the crcc is a cream and the crcb is a liquid spray. gels dry my hair out and so do mouses. i also have the same flat top so that is why when it is dry and diffused i spray more booster on and diffuse again really scrunching. it helped alot.
i have also used noodle head and liked it but the curls rock worked better for me. sam
Okay I took a lousy pic today with my cell phone (I seriously need a new phone!) to show what my hair looks like today.

Today's routine:
Cowashed with Suave Coconut - rinsed completely
Put MORE in, then didn't rinse totally out of the ends.
Put in half a pump of Biotera Curl Creme.
Did my oh-so-humorous version of clipping (boy is this a learning experience!) and then diffused until mostly dry.

I got some pretty good clumping in the back, but the top and around my face are frizzed... partly because i touch it too much and because I was really afraid to use too much product, so I may have UNDER-applied.

The HARDEST thing for me is keeping my darn hands out of it!!!! I just gotta touch it... I need some of those mittens you put on babies to keep them from scratching their face.. you know?

Anyway I'm attaching a photo I attempted to take of the back of my head while sitting around today... there wasn't anyone here to take it for me and I'm not sure I'm ready to actually ASK them to because then I'd have to explain this strange addiction to this board and products... *grin*
So at this point I'm still wondering what curl type I am (my best guess is still 3a) and if there's something maybe that will help me have a little more definition and hold still without the heaviness.

Thanks again everyone for all your help!!!

Holy cow we have the same hair (it looks pretty good in the photo - better than mines looks right now)!
My first advice - trust the CG. I too have the oily skin, and I now only wash 1-2 times a week. It took a long time for my scalp to stabilize and stop over producing oil, (it was a month+ for me) but once it did everything was much better. Just a warning, the transition phase is not going to feel great but you have to tough it out to really get the benefit of CG. Also I do a ACV (apple cider vinegar, 1:5 vinegar to water) rinse routine every other week, then a DT (so low poo, ACV, DT). At the beginning I did this more often (once a week at least), but I seem to need it less. To a certain extent, you have to grow out the damage, but I found that with the CG the damaged hair felt better and behaved better making the growing off less annoying.

Most people with our hair type use curl cream but I have yet to find one that is light enough. I find that for my fine, sparse hair I need a light product with A LOT of hold to keep the frizzies down. I am currently using adagio crazy curl gel and am quite happy with it (I am a PJ and will probably be using a totally different product by next month). I personally do not use CK or RR anymore because they were weighing down my hair with even the tiniest amounts(RR was not as bad as CK). But you could try them, everyone's hair is different. Ok, being as I have written war & peace here and I am supposed to be working right now... here are my exact products/routine:

deva red low poo (1 a week, water wash the other time)
Burts Bees super shiny cond for water wash days
KKKT for low poo day (and on ends if they are feeling fried on other days)

Gel (adagio crazy curl right now)

diffuse (only sometimes, usually I just plop, finish my morning routine, drive to work, unplop in the car and walk into my office.)

On the in between days, I just refresh my hair by wetting my hands, putting a little bit of gel (dime or less) into my hand and scrunching into my hair. Day three is nearly always an up-do.

That may have been way more than you were looking for, but I thought I would share my story since it sounds like we have similar hair.
jojob - that was NOT too much, it was EXACTLY what I was looking for!! Being so very new to all of this I'm looking for people who will just tell me their routines like you did so that I can learn what it's all about. You have no idea how much I appreciate you taking the time to type all that out for me!

I'm on my 3rd day without poo of any kind... my hair is a little heavier and I'm not sure if it's because it's just not dried out, or if I need to low poo to get some of the product out?!?

Anyway... again, I thank you! I really want my hair to be healthy again and your post/advice is exactly what I was looking for!!
