Yes, You Do Need Protein

This thread is fantastic. Wanted to see if we could talk proteins for a bit more .

Im pretty new to cg. Have been using CJ daily fix and experimenting with cg gels and things were good, getting good waves.

Then I bought aphologie (sp) the hard protein stuff and was using it about every third week. Started a Fructis wonder waves and though...oh that's killing my hair.

Kept doing the aphologie treatments and then bought some protein treatments from spiral solutions and was putting on protein every day. My hair is almost stick straight....

so i'm thinking I have protein overload....Right? i have total confidence in the spiral solutions and think the aphologie is just way too strong or not CG?

Any suggestions? I learn SO much from this community!
My hair isn't responsive to protein. On separate occasions I've used Jason's Biotin Conditioner as a co-wash, and an egg/olive oil mask. It took me a week of the Conditioner to feel any new strength in my strands, and the egg wash did nothing once it was rinsed out. I'm scared to go out and buy a commercial protein treatment like K-Pak or Aphogee because that might be money down the drain.
Can anyone relate?
Many people cannot tolerate that much protein every day, unless you have really fine hair.

If you're using protein and your hair is getting straighter, you're using too much.
Kiva! Microfinance works.

Med/Coarse, porous curly.
I avoided protein for more than a year because my hair had developed a protein sensitivity. Now I'm using protein again. I think it's a balancing act. I still don't use anything with keratin in it.

That is too much protein for most people. When my hair gets too much protein it starts to get straighter. I'd back off the protein for a while. When your curl pattern gets back to normal, then I'd reintroduce protein, but less of it. If one of the curl experts in this thread gives you different advice, take their advice and not mine. I'm not an expert (yet ).

Thanks for all the replies. I am fine haired but the strands are think....but I'm only a 2a I think. I'm guessing I really overdid it and I will back off.
I have SS protein spray and the deep treatment but I'm going to wait about a month on both then do one or the other...not both and just do them sparingly.

Now off to read the articles to get me much more moisture!

Just want to double check. This is her current protein routine.

Do you think she should increase here protein from this level?

I was thinking of a different thread. I think she should cut out the aphologie and use the milder, more moisturizing PTs. The only people who really need those strong PTs are people with really damaged hair.

If the hair has gotten straighter, obviously the moisture/protein balance is off.

I took the aphothogie back and will use the spiral solutions in a month or more. I do color my hair but just make it a touch lighter and only dye every 6 weeks, so i dont think its really that damaged.

probably i just really OVER proteined it. I still have to find a good moisturizer that is curly girl thats not all butter/oil based. Being fine haired those ingredients just really weigh down my hair.

wow my hairr is a chore to figure out!
I found out I had the same problem I had removed all proteins instead of just removing the ones my hair doesn't like. My hair doesn't really like silk so I stopped using it. Anyway I think you really have to find out what your hair likes.
I slathered on fat-free greek yogurt on my hair and let it soak in for an hour. Then, I shampooed with Organix Theraneem Gentle Therape shampoo.

Final Result: Only about six strands of hair broke off in the shower. No huge bunch of broken hairs in the drain. No dozens of broken strands pasted onto the wall. BUT, when I stepped out of the shower, my hair was straight. No curl! I scrunched it with a flour sack towel and its now drying. But it looks like it will dry with flyaways and not waves/curls.

Question: What can I do to counteract this? Should I put in some conditioner and then rinse it out?
Curl Type: 2b/2c
Porosity: Normal
Elasticity: Normal (I get breakage when I pre-poo and then when I shampoo it all out and then some more over the course of the next 24 hours.)
Texture: Medium

I conditioned my hair two times over the course of the week which definitely helped.

I did another yogurt PT tonight but this time, I had some breakage, not as much as before, but definitely more than last week. I'm wondering if a second treatment in two weeks was too much or was the amount of yogurt was not enough since I poured out a smaller amount to prevent waste?
