when does *just* a product become an HG?
Hello fellow curlies, I have been wondering about this for a long time now. Please vote and do tell what your HG products are.

SYB 04-05-2006 10:37 PM

Curls Ectasy, Curls Spiral Cream, and KinkyCurly's Jojoba Jelly(even though it is no longer being sold). I did choose that it does take me at least 2 weeks or less to know if a product will be a holy grail for me or not. Also, it has to give me 2nd day hair as well!

lushaholic 04-06-2006 01:59 AM

I voted the first option. Anything that consistently gives me good hair days and provides 2nd day or more hair is an HG for me. But also what I consider a good hair day is when a product gives me good curl-enhancement, good curl formation, nice clumping with no stringiness, and a natural hold/feel without any stickiness or producty feel.

My HG's are:
Boots pink
Set It Free
Awe Inspiralling spray
B&A gel
Angell (but only with Boots or Recoil underneath)

Those were all styling products, but my HG conditioners are:
Devacurl One Condition
Curls Ecstasy
Jessicurl Too Shea
Jessicurl WDT

Oh and I almost forgot....HONEY!! :D

Thanks for replying, keep them coming curlies!

Lush- I've heard a lot about boots, is it a gel or cream or what? and what is it for?

lushaholic 04-06-2006 03:38 AM

Boots is a curl cream that comes in a pink and white version. The pink works better for me, but some like the white better. The pink comes in a clear jar and can be bought from, or the white comes in a tube and you can get that from banjocurl if you like. Wouldn't do without it!! :)

I voted six months, because I've had some products not work in certain kinds of weather and I'm not the kind who's willing to swap out products acccording to season. I can't keep it all straight. A product must work year-round to be a HG to me.

My HGs:
  • - Jessicurl RR
    - Jessicurl CCSS
    - Jessicurl HCC
    - Ojon RT
    - Elucence MB Condish
    - vinegar+h2o
    - homemade scalp massage oil: jojoba with tea tree oil and peppermint e.o. [this replaced my former HG of Aveda's Balancing Infusion]
    - pink Boots [but I don't use it currently, since it's kinda hard to get]
I think CurlKeeper might be added to this list. I just ordered my second bottled of it from CurlMart, so we'll see.

I'm a 3a/b, coarse and thick, BTW.

I voted 2 weeks simply because I haven't been using what I think is my HG styling combination long enough to warrant voting six months. Also, I rarely get second day hair- I am lucky if it's still curling by evening- it's usually flattened out into a wave by then, but as it gets longer, that looks ok, too.

For styling:

pink Boots with a little Aura hypo gel over it. I wish I hadn't waited so long to try Boots- I have had good hair with it since I started using it - no unplanned ponytails, even in the rain :D

Jessicurl WDT

and, of course, honey (when my wonderful child hasn't poured it on himself/ the floor)

It needs to work consistently for a solid month. If it works that long, it's a keeper. My current holy grails are Elucence s&c, Mastey Traite, Boots white stuff and Aura Hypo gel. Also, pure unrefined shea butter. My hair and skin love it.

When my hair was shorter (around waist length), my holy grails were Jessicurl Too Shea and Rockin' Ringlets. I had a loooot of good hair days with those two but my hair outgrew them.

I love re:coil. I loved it from the first time I've used it, and other than one time, it has never let me down in at least two full months of use...maybe three months. Can't remember.

One C is also a great conditioner...better than anything else I've ever used.

godgivenperm 04-06-2006 03:22 PM

I voted 1 month because that's about how long I've been using my Tigi Amplifier. I think this product is my HG as it's consistant with curl definition to my hair. If I re-wet the next day I get great 2nd day hair too.
It also doesn't make scalp itch nor feel like it's attracting gunk to my hair which has happened to me with other products.

Now...this of course does not stop me from trying other products that I read about here! :-) Garnier Soft Curls was on sale so I bought some and whilst it's not bad I'm probably not going to buy it again.

And next month I plan on buying the Jessicurl sample pack.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their HG's with me. I've been CGing for a while now, but leaving my hair down, therefore experimenting w/different products, is still relativly new to me. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. I am, however, a total PJ!! I've heard so much about boots and re:coil, so I can't wait to try those. I'm still waiting on my OneC to get here but I do have high hopes!

I don't know how it is for you all, but for me, wearing my hair down (feeling the breeze on my scalp) is like an addiction. :D

That's how I wear my hair 99.9% of the time, unless I'm at the gym. The only time I wear it another way is if I'm sick (like today I was at the hospital most of the day and wore it in a ponytail - which is very unusual for me!) or I'm trying to pull off 4th day hair or more - in which case braids are my favorite. But yeah, my favorite way to wear my hair is down, and is how I feel most comfortable with it. :)

jeepcurlygurl 04-06-2006 05:58 PM

I voted 6 months, which is about how long it took to find what works for me in most weather conditions. I only try new things for fun.

Suave/VO5 conditioners for washing and conditioning (2 or 3 times a week).
LA Looks sport Gel (every day)
Jessicurl Confident Coils (mainly because I like the smell. I don't use it every day)

I never get 2nd day hair and wet my hair every day (unless I'm not going anywhere, then I just put it in a pony or headband).

CurliLocks 04-06-2006 07:01 PM

I voted 2 months, only because my newest styling gel hasn't been in the mix longer than that. :D But it usually takes longer for me to decide it's an HG.

My HGs are:

Robert Craig's (RC's) Shampoo for Color-treated hair (HG for 9+ yrs, since I've been using his Color at least that long!)
RC's Conditioner (same: 9+ yrs)
CHS Curl Keeper (about 2-3 yrs)
Suave Firm Control Gel (the newbie at about 2 months!) ***before the suave it was kenra's gel or mousse***

I get 2nd, 3rd and often 4th day hair with these products, just misting with water each day to refresh.

Curli - Your hair is gorgeous! I love the hight you're able to get all around the top, and the style is great too!

I consider my HG. Without all of the invaluable tips and wonderfull information I've gotten here, I would still be wearing my hair up in a bun!

THANKS everyone!!

Thanks Pixie and Kurli! Don't know exactly what it was, just that I never ever want to experience that kind of pain and for that long again. I have to go back today to another department and see if they can pinpoint the problem. But at least I feel so much better now! :)

wild~hair 04-07-2006 06:11 PM
