Anyone have allergic reactions to hair products containing citrus?

Last night, I found out the hard way that I am in fact allergic to hair products containing citrus. I tried this all natural (Darcy's Botanicals Natural Coiling Jelly) and my scalp felt like it was on FIRE. Then I looked in the mirror and noticed that around my forehead and ears were irritated. I don't know if it`s because I have sensitive skin to begin with, but I`ve never had any problems with citrus fruit . . so this for me was weird.

Anyone have a similar experience or am I just strange?

I have reactions to a lot of things, and citrus is a very common one for people to react to (I react some to it but not as much as others do). Citrus oils can be irritating to the scalp and skin. I have the darcys but it's on the shelf for another reason....the glycerin and the castor oil in it make my hair buildupy and ewww feeling.

Ah, okay. I was just wondering because in my house I`m the only person running around trying new hair products/things on the regular.

I am allergic to citrus oils.
I can't use anything that has lemon, lemongrass, orange, grapefruit, anything in the citrus family.
I found out that sensitivity when I used oyin hemp conditioner.
Since then I buy everything unscented.
For the darcy's botanicals, you can get them unscented. Just ask her in the notes to seller box
surprisingly, my scalp is not on fire when i use qhemet but just to be on the safe side, i decided to discontinue using her products except for the cocoa tree detangling ghee

You are not alone. I was emailing with someone who also has citrus issues.

I think it depends on HOW MUCH, too. Some products use more.

I can't even eat too many oranges in a week, or I get hives, so it's not surprising I need to watch the oils.

I didn't order the highly reviewed Mary Dean Lemon smoothie product cause "lemon" did me in. hah. Same with the Kinky Curly pomade. Got good reviews, but not for me.

So many products I see for curls do have them. I also am sensitive to peaches, so I couldn't try the shampoo that they rave about--Elucence Moisture. Peach is in the first ingredient.

I also have to watch carefully if it has pineapple...

But I rotate a lot. I had to take a break for a while from my beloved Curl Junkie, cause I was using it a lot and developed sensitivities. (I suspect the mango ingredients, as I'm allergic to mango blossoms like crazy, sends me to the doctor, and I try not to expose myself to the skin of the fruit, though I can EAT it.)

So, yeah, I think you and I have lots of company, given how many report itchy scalp after using stuff like DevaCurl.

You can develop allergies over time. THat's what happened to me and poison ivy. I wouldn't think anything with citrus would be good for your scalp unless you're trying to get rid of dandruff. ETA: I don't put anything directly on my scalp cept castor oil - not even rinse out conditioners. my scalp gets itchy and irritated fast and doesn't need products.
I have a sensitivity to tea tree oil. The eye doctor gave me a scrub for my inflamed eyelids with tea tree in it, and it burned like fire ants! Not just my eyelids, but my cheeks too. I also don't tolerate certain preservatives and conditioners and the detergent in baby shampoo. They make my scalp itch and irritate my eyelids. They didn't bother me in the past. Contact dermatitis is pretty common, even to things which never bothered you before. Hope your skin is feeling better. I was told by my allergy nurse to use a thin layer of over the counter (1%) hydrocortisone cream for reactions like that.
